Cold Steel GI Tanto Video Destruction Test Completed

fdd19: Yea I got your point about the advertising between the two.

Okay keep your eyes open for one and let me know. I have never seen one in person. They do look nice and hi tech.

Well I decided to cut off the guards (didn't see the point of that big choil) and trim the handle 1", then wrap it samuri-style in paracord which I then toast lightly over a flame to bring out the cross-hatching in the cord. This makes for an incredibly stout, lightweight knife that is 100% secure in the hand even w/o a guard - I will try to post some pics. It's awesome!! I'm sending it to a reservist buddy as soon as I find a sheath for it b/c the original sheath is cheap.

ok let's see if this works - trying to use a new phone camera . . . . hmm, I should be able to get better pics than this! I'll have to figure this camera out. But anyway this is a pretty bada$$ piece of work that you can abuse w/o fear, for $25 shipped and an hour or so on the dremel. I put thumb serrations on the spine and angled part of the pommel for good measure. Still have to drill a lanyard hole, & now I gotta find a decent but inexpensive sheath . . . .

Fishface5 it looks sweet. Nice and compact, but big. If that makes sense?

Since you've done that many mods you may as well make your sheath. Try knifekits.com , the kydex kits are around $10. I'm going to make one if I ever have a spare minute.

yeah it's a serious B&E tool! I'll look into the kydex kits but when I've tried before it has been difficult to get a clean result - you really need a press, and those are expensive . . . .

fishface5: Fantastic job. It looks nice, sleek and fast. I'm going to do this to one of mine. Great work.

What did you use to recoat the metal where you cut it ?

Noss, busse combat is no longer supplying FBM's but the company store is, that where we have to get them from, so if you want one you will need to go there and hit the order site and refresh until they show up. or get a mint one from someone who has them, if they are wlling to sell it. In fact going with a mint resell may be best so no one says that a knife was specially made for you, like being softer etc.

Noss - thanks, I think it really improves the knife. 6" of bad news in a light tough package! I actually just wrapped the handle in stair-tread tape after cutting off the guards, then wrapped that in the original cord wrap, Then wrapped over that in standard paracord w/the center removed. I don't think any moisture can get through all that, especially the adhesive backing to the tape.

fishface5: It looks fantastic..The one thing about para cord handles is once they get wet they stay wet for a good while. The tape is a good idea to help prevent rust. Great Mod.

Cobalt: I understand your point.

I just picked up a GI Tanto the other day. I have many Cold steel knives ranging all the way up to the SanMaiIII Trailmaster Bowie and they have all given me great service for the money, but I think this GI Tanto may be the most fun so far, because it was so cheap I don't mind throwing (which is what I bought it for). I have thrown the Trailmaster, but I would feel real bad if I ruined the kraton handle etc on such an expensive knife.

Thanks for showing the pictures of the Specops sheaths. I Have been wondering for sure it the GI would fit. Where is the cheapest price you have found for them, the least I have seen them for is like $45.

noss4 have you done a CS Gurhka Kukri test yet. they are real mean choppers. Also, I was reading one comment about the CS political crap. People talk down about cold steel here or what? I am new here. I have like 10 different cold steel knives ranging from the super inexpensive GI tanto, hawks, shovel, push knives, boot knives, folders up to the SanMaiIII Trail-Master (some what pricey) and have yet to have a single one break or fail ever. I even accidentally bounced one of their Stainless Kobun tanto's off a hardened hawk hammer head while throwing and it did not even break then (it was a hard throw that hit square on the tip). No complaints, especially considering most of them are very inexpensive.

Bigfatty, there are many places that sell them cheaper, like Spec-Ops direct. Do a search. Not on here, the web. And yes, I have over 20 Cold Steel knives. Never a problem. My fav,the Mini Tanto. Hey noss4,your the reason nobody has the GI Tanto in stock. The prices will be going up. Cold Steel should thank you.

Bigfattyt: No I haven't tested a CS Gurhka Kukri yet. Yes there is some political stuff. Certain brands Cold Steel, Strider, Dark ops get people fired up.

kurodrago: Thanks..Your welcome :)

Eric N: If a knife does well it will sell. There is a lot of power in video. It lets people see for themselves before they decide.

If they made a knife that was almost identical but in drop or spear point it would sell even more I bet.

holy shit, that site is almost as cool as internet porn. Although I might have nightmares about Freddy.- Thanks for all the work
