I think the problem with switching to 440C is that 440C has larger chromium carbides than AUS8 so it's harder to machine. That would increase the cost by more than just the switch in steel. It may not take as fine an edge as AUS8 also.

Aus8 is a trash stainless steel...Even 440c would be a step up from aus8.

False. Aus8 is superior to 440C, and more costly to produce. Carbon content is not the end of the story. aus series steps have vanadium, 400 series doesn't. In my experience, aus8 takes a finer edge than 440c, holds it longer, and is tougher. 440c is more stain resistant though.

I get the feeling that you don't know much about steel. Anyone who does, knows that aus8 is a good stainless steel. In fact as a user, it is my preference. I own or have owned knives with D2, elmax, vg10, s30v, s90v, etc. I still prefer aus8 for daily utility use. I find the ultra high Rockwell steels chip rather easily. Toughness is one of the most important traits in an edc knife (if you actually plan to use it). aus8 can also take as fine an edge as many of those powder steels.

If hardness, edge retention, and degree of edge fineness are the most important features of a blade, then all steel known to, or will ever be created by man, is/was/will always be, exponentially inferior to obsidian.

But I do Iove my steel snobs...they are so funny.

Calm down yinz. Let's talk about Cold Steel!

I like the idea of aluminum handles. So more of that. I like their aus-8. More wave openers.

And I get the feeling you've got a collection of crappy knives lol. Probably a bunch of sogs and kabars.

Lol. I don't own a single SOG. I do have a couple of Kabar fixed blades though. Never considered Beckers to be crappy knives though. And I suppose my ZTs, Spydies, and BMs must be crappy knives too. Thanks for setting me straight on that!

BTW, you can get a triad lock in a super steel, if that's what floats your boat. Get a Demko AD-10.

Ive been wrong before. I just don't see why someone who thinks aus steels are superior to high grade tool steels and the like would ever buy $200-300 BM, ZT, or Spydercos.

I think our differences in this argument lie in personal preference more than anything. In my experience 440c has been superior to aus8 for an edc. Aus8 is easier to sharpen but thats not an issue if you have the right tools, right stones. I'd like a set of kitchen knives in aus8.

There's something cold steel should make. A set of quality, no nonsense, ergonomic, affordable kitchen knives.

He didn't say that AUS8 was superior to high grade tool steels, he said that it was a good user steel and it was his preference for that usage.

And you know what they say about assuming something.

Forgive me if this has already been asked for but I would love to see a higher end double edged smatchet

Me too. Almost nobody does an "authentic" style Smatchet(Windlass Steelcrafts has one, but their stuff can be hit or miss), and while I appreciate CS's Smatchete, I'd much rather get one done in the historical style.

Now that I've had my Tuff Lite for a while, I think a 3" version would be slick. In different colors too of course.

There is a thread on the Cold Steel factory forum.

It turns out that the webmaster posted some 2015 products by mistake.

It lasted on the website long enough that someone found it.

It looks like there will be Carpenter BD-1 and XHP steels coming into replace Aus-8A from this.

What particu;ar knives have you owned in 440c? It's not really known to be a great steel, but Buck really wrings out every bit of potential with that steel with a very good heat treat, I have a Buck 55 that is still sharp after several years of use and never sharpened it. I should add it was very light use as I have too many knives to give them a ll a serious workout, but I was still impressed. A good heat treat is the single biggest factor in a knifes performance, over all the other variables.
