Cold Steel XL Espada: That's bleedin' HUGE!

Well, obviously you've never been attacked by the undead (damn amateurs around here)! :D
Call me old school, but that's what lawnmowers are for, at least in my book. Besides, a much more appropriate use would to become a filibuster and try to reconquer Central America again :D.

Now, my question is: who would really go ahead and buy the 3.5 inch folder? It's like those people that buy H3s... why? You're not living the dream- if you're going to get a hummer, it needs to be the biggest, most ridiculous you can get! Otherwise, you're just pathetic. Same applies to this folder. For god's sake, my SPYDERCO ENDURA beats it. And we all know Cold Steel won't stand for that, right? 12" or bust!!

Zero

That's what she said.

Second, I hope you're wearing loose pants when you tuck this XL Espada in your waistband for that kind of carry. It would look like you've got a little something going on down there with a 9.75" protrusion of the rod-shaped handle of a knife. This is just my inner child talkin', but come on.

IWB (In Waist Band) carry of large folders is really easy. Tucked in behind the belt buckle and angled across the body my X2 Voyager disappears. You should be able to do the same thing with the XL Espada. Now where this is practical or not is another story all together ;)

Given that the web gives me access to the world-If I wanted a large Spanish knife, I'd get it from..............I don't know Spain maybe.

Oh Godot, how long will I have to wait for you to get with the times? ;). Cold Steel has cornered the market! I mean, do you really think you could find a town like Toledo in Spain? Yeah, I thought so. If the Spanish could produce a folder that was similar to the espada grande, Cold Steel would move on to a 12" model. Anything bigger, Cold Steel will have to move forward the release of a new line of knives, known as the Pocket Zweihander- over one foot!

Exposito and Andujar both make scads of traditional navajas, the ancient folders upon which the espada is based. Beautiful knives. And, there is no shortage of oldies available-- for what seem to me to be ever-rising prices-- on Ebay every day. I think collectors are waking up to their value.

Necromancer!!!:D

MY EDC is a CS XL Voyager with a five inch blade. Along with my Skeletool.

I would like an XXL Voyager one day. Why? Because, I like em! Think I'll look at that Nava???? too. Just for the Halibut.

I like to give Cold Steel hell for their marketing and business practices as much as anybody, but I agree with some of FolderFan's sentiments. I myself enjoy large folders. Things like the Benchmade LFK and the Cold Steel X2 Voyager are good working knives for me when I don't feel like dirtying up my Sebenza.

That being said, the Espada is quite overpriced. If I was a pretty big, large folder, I'll stick with my Skirmish. Quite a difference in blade length, but no doubt different by leagues in fit and finish, country of origin, and quality of materials.

I'm guessing the XL Espada isn't so different in terms of fit and finish or overall materials (though most folks prefer S30V over AUS-8A and USA-made over Japan- or Taiwan-made). The Skirmish costs less, weighs less, and takes up less space, though, and I expect it will outsell the XL Espada when it's on the market.

The AL bolsters scratch as soon as the sun hits them. Be warned.

I recall Muela made navajas, and some of those were as big or bigger than this CS one. Also remember seeing some photos of display pieces that were several FEET long! :o

I don't have a Cold Steel folder but the Voyager XL Tanto has been on my buy list for awhile.

Even the espada xl is not a very large navaja.

The Spanish women used to hide the knife under a skirt. So the possible (and real) length was sort of from knee to hip.

At that time (19th century) the navajas were perfectly adapted to the knife laws: swords were not allowed, navajas were ok.

Today in Spain everything longer than 12 cm (about 5 inch) will lead to problem with Guardia Civil.

Apart from that:
If a long knife may be useful at all (such as a large kitchen knife)
and folders are more practical than fixeds in many cases,
why discard a large folder from the beginning?
