Personally I think he is what everyone outside America thinks is an American. :D

I used to hate CS, but now I can't get enough of them. What other company makes so many crazy products for great prices? Their high-end stuff is a bit too expensive, but at least you know it'll go through 20 layers of biker jackets lol.

I should add that I've owned Striders, CRKs, and all the flagship knives from all the usual companies, but I currently carry a Cold Steel for EDC. Go figure.

Bobby Craig that is about as wrong as you could get on who buys and uses the Cold Steel knives and whether or not we are suckered in to it. This is the common forum thing where people talk about crap they do not know or understand.

You know what. I am tired of personal attacks againest me on this site. I stated me opinion and that is that. If you have a problem with my answer then skip it and move on.

I am going to say it again so my opinion is not unknown. I feel CS is a marketing scam and not a very well made knife for the money. I feel none of thier knives are worth more then 59 or 60 bucks. If they would lower all of their knives to that price or lower I would say for the money they are OK.

Now if you have a problem with that then it is your problem. If I am not allowed to voice my opinion like other Americans can freely then tell the moderator and he can remove me if I am out of line. The question was asked and I gave my opinion. If you dont like it then dont read it.

I didn't say you were not allowed to voice your opinion, I'm just calling it a b.s. opinion. It's my right to call out b.s. when I see it also. There are plenty of people with knife know-how using Cold Steel products now and in the past, some of them I trained my self and as I said earlier they purchased certain Cold Steel knives off my recommendation and experience. Also mentioned my father who was a machinist, knife-maker, engineer loved/loves his own Cold Steel products.

How do you skip over things like this and make your generalizations, what are they based on?

There's a difference between opinions based on facts and opinions based on personal feelings.

I do however support your right to say your opinion, regardless of how wrong it is. :p

you can voice whatever "opinion" you like, and so can everyone else.

that is just a consequence of posting on a public forum.

if you can't deal with it, then by all means move on. no one really cares.

Bobby, you correctly prefaced your earlier post as being your opinion only, and that is good. What your opinion is in fact based on, you haven't really elaborated on, so well just accept it as fact.

However, I as a former armorer in the military; OrdnanceBubba as a former armorer in the military; and STR who is a well known and established maker and for all intents a civilian armorer; share quite different opinions of Cold Steel than yourself. Is it possible that we are not the drooling idiot, marketing slaves that you have painted Cold Steel owners as? Is it possible that our combined experience, along with that of many others, is greater than yours? These are simply rhetorical questions that I do not expect an answer to.

In affirmation of my position as someone who drools over magazines and knows nothing about knives, I today ordered a new generation CS Recon 1 with the marketing hyped tri-ad lock. I am sure I will take great glee in the knife as I try to figure out how to open it.

Bobby Craig has a point though.....Spyderco gets some blades made in Taiwan...you get S30V for steel, carbon fiber for scales, retails for $70-$90US.
With CS made in Taiwan, you get AUS8 and G10 for the same price.

My personal opinion is they have very few "good buys" and very few products that interest me. I have bought the ones that do, and I'm satisfied with them for the most part. I've got a Ti-lite, AK47 Axis/Emerson opener rip-off, Rajah III, Recon 1 (2010), and a Kukri Machete, and a Spike Hawk.
I find the AK47 Axis style lock sucks ass, the lock goes through the blade and rides in a C cutout, and this makes for no blade tension for about 90 degrees of the closing. I can't close it with one hand or my fingers get chopped. Glad they dumped this lock up for the Tri-ad.
The Hawks are a good buy, and the 1055 Kukri is made in South Africa and retails for $<$20....which makes me question why the SK5 Kukri (which is 1080) is retailing over $200.
Most of thier stuff is too big to be of any use to me, be it folders or fixed. I do like the Medium Espada, but would never pay $100+ for AUS8.
There really is nothing else they make I have any interest in owning, either due to the outrageous price, or the outdated steel they use.
What kind of name is Lynn for a guy anyway? I'd probably be a douchebag too if my parents named me Lynn :) Want to go out and kill 2 of every animal in the world...even the endangered ones....get fat but pretend I'm tough.....yep, my name is Lynn C Hitzy and I'm a douchebag :)

not sure what you mean regarding the axis "type" locks, but all the blades pivot freely when the mechanism is disengaged.

that is not specific to the cold steel version. ive always unlocked them with my thumb and index finger, and let the blade swing closed. this allows you to close the knife without putting your fingers in the blade channel.

Okie - I bet you didn't realize that you would get responses like the ones above - but amongst all the 'stuff' I'm sure you can pick out enough to make an informed decision.

When I select a knife, I also add what I, me, the one who is paying for it would like too because I have to feel good about it, and as an example I have a Cold Steel Recon 1 (Ultra Lock) and AK47 (Tri-ad lock) which I bought for less than US$70 each by shopping around and also pre-ordered two ESEE HEST LE folders for US$250 each. To me the CS folders are a value for money package which is based not only on the steel but on the strength of the unit as a whole.
Cheers

Well all my benchmades for instance, have resistance between when you unlock the blade and swing to the closed position, due to the lock bar riding the rear of the blade giving it a little bit of tension. The AK type doesn't have this due to it's design and swings freely between open and closed even when the lock pin is not pulled back . I mostly notice it in failed "Emerson Opening's". I tried tightening the pivot, but then it won't open for shit :)

i see. i haven't handled the cold steel version but i'm thinking of ordering one of the older recons. ill let you know what i think.

I found some CS Recon 1's with the axis type locks at my local John T's. Both are part serrated IIRC. Price is $119.99.

$119 for the pair?
They are $89 Canadian here....should be $60-$70 max down US side. Big Blade store down there (HQ) has them for $76, should be able to beat that somewhere else.

Not the pair... each... plus tax.

Oh well, not to up on CS prices.

Cold Steel has proper patents for all their mechanisms, else they would've been sued long ago.

Spyderco tried to sue Benchmade for a hole if you don't remember.

On the earlier Ultra Lock packages there was credit given to Benchmades Axis lock. The two companies did have an agreement on the matter.

As to Benchmade using the hole. There was discussions between Spyderco and Benchmade at that particular moment. Soon after that Benchmade introduced the 550HG and others with the round hole and then Spyderco came out with their first automatic knife (something Benchmade is known for), so there might have been an agreement on terms and conditions. Dont know anything about Spyderco trying to sue Benchmade but if you could give references I would be interested.

The ability of an axis lock blade to swing closed under gravity is a function of the pivot tightness where Benchmade is concerned. When the lock bar is pulled fully back on a Benchmade Axis Lock, there is absolutely no contact with the tang. On the Cold Steel Recon 1 (old) and the AK-47 (old), the lock bar does not fully clear the tang at the 90 degree position as resistance can be felt. From the factory, neither of these Cold Steel knives will swing freely.

Sal has requested from forum members both here and on Spyderco's own forum, that the matter be allowed to quietly die. Trust me, it has been beaten to death already.
