Collector knife received from smoker. Overreacting?

I would have to agree with a previous post about cleaning it. For me, taking apart my EDC folders and cleaning them is almost as therapeutic as sharpening them. :)

I got a similar problem about a month ago with Casio PathFinder watch.
I met the seller in person and found the watch really nice, but when I got em home they were just screaming "SMOKER".
The textile band was dead for me and I cut it down, watches itself took three or four baths in hot water with soap and now, after a month of wearing it's hard to say they ever stunk (but it is possible). It can be hard to get smoke out of some materials.
Good luck with that man ;-)

I traded for a Benchmade once that reeked of smoke and while it did stink, the smell soon went away. I just didn't think the smoke smell could manage to stick around on a knife's hard surfaces too long and it didn't. As far as damage to the knife from the smoke, didn't see anything of that nature at all.

Wow there are a lot of former smokers here! I know it's off-topic, but any tips on quitting? I've been wanting to kick the habit for some time but I'm not sure how to go about it

Is it really worth risking your knives to second-hand smoke?

Well, you have to detox. Total abstention (cold turkey) is best and only takes a few days. Then some months for the brain chemicals to totally rebalance. During this time, and occasionally thereafter triggers will be an issue. I have heard people say they beat these by telling themselves that cigarettes are horrible and that they are revulsed by them. As you can see from this thread, this has worked for many.

if you place the knife, or most any object in your freezer it will stop the smell. looks weird with a zip-lock bag full of shoes, but it works. smell is caused by bacteria and the freezing kills most of the bacteria. hope you find your answer.

Former smoker here. Clean knife in rubbing alcohol. Take all paperwork and the foam and the box outside and leave it in the open air for several days. Eventually the smell will dissipate.

As for advise on how to stop smoking, I have none. You would think I would be an expert since I stopped smoking dozens of times before I finally stopped for good.:o

Considering I smoke in my garage and outdoors away from most of my knives, this isn't too much of an issue for me :p

Killing bacteria does eliminate odors from organic material (sweat, urine, feces, food residue, etc), but combustion converts organic matter into inorganic particulates, so freezing in this case probably wouldn't have any noticeable effect.

I hate getting a knife from a smoker, I got one or two, I just cleaned them real good & they were fine. one came with a pouch that smelled like a bar after a night of smoke, I aired it out for a week or two, hung it outside wishing for a bird would fly away with it...

...I purchased a C90GFPD Damascus Stretch on fleabay and it was described as new and in fact it looks beautiful...

...My problem is whoever previously owned the knife was a smoker and it reeks to high heaven...

If you're not happy with the knife, and feel it's not as described,

...you should have no problem returning it.

If you are willing to except it as is, needing cleaning etc,

...then keep it, and deal with the issues you feel the knife has.

Only you can make that call!

Big Mike

The tip on ozone is a good one, I bought an ozone generator to treat my hunting clothes with, worked well. Having said that I'm a big fan of Fabreeze, yeah the deodorant for you house, laundry car, whatever. It's only a couple bucks at the grocery store, worth a try!!!

I would return the knife if it is a collector.

I have had this happen to me twice. Once on the bay and once here. I hate it when people don't fully disclose the condition of a knife.

Let it air out and get over it. Maby at most spray a bit of body spray type stuff close by it. Tobacco smoke won't have any adverse affects on the knife.
Now if it smelled of cat ur in or like melted plastic with a hint of "sweetness" then there would be a major problem but that would be for the previous owners narcotics division not you.
In short, chill and enjoy your new acquisition

Fabreeze, Lysol or air it out away from direct sunlight. It works for $2000 suits, too.

I had a few knives from a friend who smokes.....alot. Just spraying them with WD40 got rid of the stink....I bet what you are smelling is mainly the box and paperwork. That will go away with time, just store it somewhere it isnt going to bother you or anyone else. I really dont think that is worth sending it back especially if you like the knife.

Just picture how much you smoke....lets say one pack a day. Now think about the knife you want to buy next.....lets just say ....a small sebenza. So 350 is the going rate for a new one......if you are smoking cigs that cost 8 bucks a day quitting will get you a sebenza in a little under a month and a half. Plus you will feel better and be able to taste things again.

I know its off topic but as long as its used to promote buying more knives........

Some years ago I got a wood carving (desert ironwood) from fleabay and as soon as I opened the box the cigarette smell just about knocked me over. I just set it aside and over time the smell went away. I can't remember how long it took, but I think it was months.

I bought a revolver that smelled like an ashtray, threw out the rubber grips and replaced with wood ones oiled the gun and everything is fine, no problems now. Holster I febreezed and hung outside for couple of days and turned out fine.

Unfortunately, Im a smoker. I do not smoke inside my house, but I do cook with curry and peppers frequently. Should I disclose this in my sale threads? To the OP, return the knife.

Ahahahaha!!! Damn, dude! Should you disclose that in sale threads?!

I think this whole thing has gone a bit too far....

"Yes, I have a knife for sale. I cook with curry and peppers frequently and also fart on occasion!"

Good god, what's next? It's scent. Air it out, clean it off, grow a pair....
