Collector knife received from smoker. Overreacting?

Call Spyderco.
Maybe they can send you replacement stuff, although I would hate to be on the other end when a caller says "please help, my box is stinky." They really are great to deal with so you never know till you try.

Wipe the blade off with alchohol or a detergent. It should be fine. As far as the box goes, I'd store it outside (like in the garage) for a few weeks and not worry about it.

By the way, I didn't direct all of that at you personally. I think this whole thing is just a bit ridiculous. The smell WILL dissipate. It's nothing to worry about, or return a knife over, or even start a thread about IMO. It's a non issue.

I wore my hat to the bar last night and now it smells like smoke! Should I throw it away?! C'mon guys. That's about how laughable this all sounds to me. Leave it outside a couple days - no problem.

The curry disclosure comment just shoved my funnymeter over the edge.

The alcohol first mentioned by Knarfeng is perfect for the knife itself. I had to read the whole thread to see if anyone mentioned the next method. Place the box and papers into a bell jar and pull a vacuum with a pump. Leave it for a day and this will purge the volatile compounds. Best if it is warm when/where you do this, as warmth helps the stinky molecules to evaporate and be removed by the pump. Exhaust the pump outside.

AntDog, no worries, I think we are on the same page with this issue. I was quoting CNCPro "please help, my box is stinky" made me laugh.
No disrespect to the OP. Just try to clean it or return it.

That's great! I sincerely didn't mean to offend anybody. This whole thing is just a little funny to me.

"My box is stinky...." Now that's funny! I think they make stuff for that too.. Should make his box smell fresh as a summers eve.

Seriously to the OP - if you feel like you can get the same knife at the same deal, and it bugs you that much, return it and get the other one. If not, clean the knife up w alcohol, then oil it and let the box air out til it doesn't stink. No problem.

Unfortunately, Im a smoker. I do not smoke inside my house, but I do cook with curry and peppers frequently. Should I disclose this in my sale threads? To the OP, return the knife.
Garlic too! Do you use much garlic? DISCLOSE!

Wow there are a lot of former smokers here! I know it's off-topic, but any tips on quitting? I've been wanting to kick the habit for some time but I'm not sure how to go about it
I tried everything, and now I'm 4 months 'clean'. The gum hands down. PM or email me if you want to talk.

Just picture how much you smoke....lets say one pack a day. Now think about the knife you want to buy next.....lets just say ....a small sebenza. So 350 is the going rate for a new one......if you are smoking cigs that cost 8 bucks a day quitting will get you a sebenza in a little under a month and a half. Plus you will feel better and be able to taste things again.

I know its off topic but as long as its used to promote buying more knives........

But I roll my cigs and it costs me literally less than $8 a week

The problem with that is that they are mostly semi-volatile compounds. Use some Simple Green on it. It works for just about everything. It is my go to cleaning detergent from rugs to walls to bathrooms stuff to the car (with a quick rinse). You have to pay attention with aluminum with base (vs acid) detergent with aluminum.

I use a lot of Simple Green..... probably 10 gallons in the last week. But that is for work....

"Collector knife received from smoker. Overreacting?"
Yes. Now the outgassing of toxic fumes from the blast furnace that made the steel the blade is made of, that's something to worry about.

Nobody wants to have to battle cigarette odor after paying a premium for a knife they plan to resell.
I think it should be disclosed that the knife may stink like an ashtray and possibly require some cleaning.
I smoked for about a decade and quit about 6 years ago, so I can relate to how much more obvious that particular stink is.
Chantix was my wonder drug that helped me quit. Had some wild dreams that some people complain about but I thought it was fun, not to mention the health problems and $ it saved me over time.

I've bought several knives on the secondary market.
I clean every knife I receive, always sticky, hate that (just a minor mysophobia on my side I guess).
And yes, I smoke...

I would also clean any knife I purchase from an individual regardless of the quality. You just never know what might be on the surface.
