computer help :grumpy:

Another interesting thing about the computer, I tried opening the "Run" button, and as soon as I type something in and run in, the black box pops up and immediately leaves! Interesting, ain't it?

That's common. My sister's laptop got one that changed the system password. I could get around that, but then the system would shut down after 20 seconds.

If you've got your Windows disc. You can just do a complete install without formatting. It'll leave your personal data intact while reinstalling all the files the bad stuff is clinging to. Or switch to Linux :D.

I've never had to do it, but I know a local computer pro who does a lot of business cleaning malware off people's computers. That's the way he does it, with a CD. He tells me some of the malware around can infect anything else you connect to an infected computer and protect itself that way (and spread) but no matter what the hackers do with software they can't write to a CD.

Hey, at this point anything is worth a try! Thanks Cougar

All I need is to find a stupid blank disk

Well, I certainly dont have the skills to get around it, and I dont think I have the Windows disc for that computer. I can check though.

Do you have broadband? You can download a Linux Live CD and see if you can find and delete the programs causing you problems. While I won't advocate Piracy, you can obatin a copy of XP online and use that. You've already paid for it.

That is a Windows CMD (command) dialogue box, and is therefore worrying. Boot the computer to Safe Mode, usually by tapping F8 key as the computer is booting. Then try loading antimalwarebytes and run it. Don't bother going online to update it, just run it. Then reboot, and you can go online and update, then run again. It is an excellent program.

There is a common misconception that 'System Restore' will fix prettty much everything by making your computer like it was a few days ago, but in reality, it only restores Windows System Files. It will only fix problems with the Windows operating system itself, but not anything third party added on, or any exe programs added since. Browser Hijackers aren't part of Windows.

There are also online scanners that you can use like Panda Scan
http://www.pandasecurity.com/usa/homeusers/solutions/activescan/default.htm

The scan takes a long time, but it checks every single file on your computer.

FWIW, I think you have a number of issues going on in the computer. When was the last time you did a reformat and clean install?

Breaking news...tried downloading MalwareBytes in safe mode and it still says "Setup was unable to create the directory ":\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware". Error 5: Access is denied

I logged in as the Administrator if it matters

The program that's took over probably has a list of what not to let you install. It can take over administrator duties and block any account from doing anything. PM sent.

They can do that? That's insanely genius!

Yet, I hate the person who thought about it:grumpy:

Hey thanks for all the help thus far! My internet finally stopped re-directing but it still won't let me download anything. Will System Restore (as some people already tried advocating) have a chance in fixing anything? Or is there any downside to it? Because I don't think I did anything important on it since say, Nov 1st

Sys restore won't cause you to lose any data. It just rolls your OS back to a date you select. Pick a date before you noticed the bug. While this won't remove it, it should allow you to run the computer normally, and get some of the malware fixers that have been mentioned above and run them.

BTW, did you download any software just before you got the bug? If so, delete it thru Add/Remove Programs, then download and run Ccleaner. On the first download of Ccleaner, you'll get a popup telling you something bad, I don't remember what it is now. Just Ignore it, and when finished install it again. Run it and reboot your computer. Reboot after any malware programs you run are finished. Then go to Microsoft Updates and download all critical security patches. Then reboot your computer, if it doesn't give you the option to reboot after the MS downloads.

Alright thanks, i'll get back to you soon

No luck :(

It said that there were no changes made or something, and I went back to the farthest date they had recorded, which was Sept. 23rd

tell me what cureit found if you can. see if you can do a search also. try searching for antispywarexp09. let me know if you find it.

its not protection, its only a way to remove viruses. a firewall and antivirus is what protects you

Sorry I was just going by what it said, and it says Dr. Web Anti-Virus. Excuse my ignorance

Either way I know i need real protection...I just need to figure out why nothing will install
