Concern with damaging an expensive EDC?

Let me preface my question by saying that you guys are enablers. I came here a little while ago with a few simple questions, and now I'm carrying different knives on different days, and always wondering what my next blade will be. At least it's not meth or heroin.

Considering getting a nicer knife. CRK or something else in that price range. Do you guys worry about damaging your knives (edit) due to unforeseen situations? Example: A few weeks ago I was driving with somebody and one of their snow chains broke. They had no tools in the car (ugh) so I pried out the stuck chain with my Benchmade. Blade got scratched a little, and I had to regrind the edge. Not a big deal, but would not be happy doing that with a $500 knife.

Is this a concern for people who carry nice knives? Do you just let them get used and not worry about it?

No, I don't worry about damaging my custom or other high end knives. I get the most joy out of carrying & using my high end knives.

(there is no such word as knifes.)

I have a multitool or SAK in my pocket for such an event. That's also handy if someone asks to borrow a knife for some reason.

Thanks. Fortunately aware that it's not a word, and embarrassed that I typed it. Appreciate the correction.

Just decide if you prefer heroin or meth, it'll probably be a considerably healthier financial decision.

It depends on how you are with your knives and how much the price affects your usage. I'm only speaking for myself here, but I don't own any knives that I won't use. Price has no impact on my usage. That being said, I am by no means a hard use kind of guy. Other people are different. It took me about 6 months to figure all of this out. When I first stumbled into BladeForums, I had no idea if I would only have users or if I wanted some special safe queens. It took experience and gradually moving up in price to figure it out. I bought a few knives with no intention of using them, but then just couldn't. When I stepped up to different price thresholds, I would debate not using them for a little while, and always did. Figure out what brings you joy and what you're comfortable with. Enjoy the journey!

Im not really worried. But i usually carry a small multitool for stuff that doesnt need to be cut. Otherwise, dont drop your knife on ceramic tiles. The tiles will win.

Well, IMHO if you are using a knife for what it was designed to be used for them I wouldn't worry at all about damaging it. But I would not consider prying snow chains as normal use a knife was designed for. To me the question depends on what you are actually planning on using it for. If your question is more along the lines of "are custom knives so awesome that they can survive things your average $100 folder would fail at?" The answer would be no. If you are prying snow chains with your knives you have just as much risk of damaging it as you would a comparable production knife. A custom knife you are mostly paying for exclusivity, hand workmanship and details. But a properly heat treated blade of s30v (or any other steel) is going to be the same no matter if its in a production piece or a custom. And as long as they are both heat treated properly then its going to come down to design to know which performs better.

I carry a Chris Reeve Inkosi that I'm not afraid to use.....to cut things. I wouldn't use any of my knives to pry with. In that situation I would have used my Atwood Ghost to pry or found something else to pry with like a spare key or maybe the end of a tire iron. I've always had a tendency of taking care of my stuff whether it's expensive or cheap.

I baby my new big $$ blades a little until they show signs of usage then the honeymoon is over baby, right into user rotation with ya' just like the rest.

If concerned about damaging it (or losing it), why bother carrying it?

Which is why I don't EDC anything over $125. Indeed, my most oft EDC folder cost me $75.

I don't think twice about using it but I don't abuse it either.

Nope. I don't baby them. Got out of the collecting for collecting sake game a while ago. A lot less fun when you can't use awesome stuff you bought. That said, not sure I would pry snow chains or anything of the like with my knife. I carry a multi-tool ever day along with my knife, so it has tools for such jobs.

You build up to it.

You start with a Spyderco Delica or Ontario Rat, for example. Then you get into Benchmades and Microtechs. Next thing you know, there's a $450 Chris Reeve in your pocket.

It becomes the new normal LOL

A knife is a tool. Tools are meant to be used. That said, there are proper tools for every job. Prying snow chains isn't a job for a knife, IMO. Using the wrong tool is a good way to damage the tool and possible yourself or something else as well.
I'm definitely not afraid to use any tool I have. I like when they show use. It reminds me I've accomplished something.

When I carry a new EDC I'm somewhat careful with it for a while. i don't use it for any gnarly cutting tasks that would cause severe damage. I keep some tools and a couple older knives in my car for such instances plus a multi-tool.

I edc a new Umnumzaan now and I love it.
