Concern with damaging an expensive EDC?

You surprise me alot bro...Sometimes you say stuff that can only be repeated in the pirates cove...And then... You manifest the very essence of truth in your actions... And find "release"....In something so simple...

That concept makes perfect sense. Thanks for putting a name to my belief.

I am a, you bought it so use it, type guy. I know not everyone feels that way. I had to make myself do this and it was not easy. The best way to do it is get the knife out of the box and just start using it for anything and everything that pops up and not think about it. I was very surprised with my first ever small Sebenza. I could not believe the abuse it took. I still have it but mostly just to show customers what all I did to it and how little wear it shows. Now no matter the knife, if it goes in my pocket, I am going to use the heck out of it. Better to know daily what it can take than to find out in the wrong situation.

^ That's a great way to do it.

Nearly all of my knives are similar. And therefore if I put them into a weeklong service rotation...It means I have no excuse not to use it. So if it's in my pocket at the moment...That's the knife I'll be using...

Here's my current rotation. One costs a little more than the rest but I like them a the same...

I always have a alox cadet or pioneer along with my EDC 1 handed knife. For such tasks and to lend if someone asks to borrow a knife. There so small and handy. In a pinch the screw driver makes a good light duty pry bar and if you break it there under $30 usually but I've yet to break one. http://http://

Alox cadet for the win. It gets the abuse and the other knife does the cutting.

Count me among those SAK/MT carries, who does it just to avoid things like that. If you aren't comfortable with on-person carry, try putting them in a bag or somewhere inside your car/vehicle
Yep. But I wasn't in my vehicle and didn't have my backpack with me. Both have multi-tools in them. Doesn't happen often, but it happens.

Interesting how quickly our assumptions are wrong when things go sideways. In this case an unexpected snowstorm that essentially shut the city down. I was getting a ride to my car from a work event with somebody else. Unforeseen circumstances. Need to reconsider carrying some kind of tool. (I have a couple of bar tools - just don't EDC them.)

Appreciate this perspective. If I carry a knife and I'm concerned about using it, why am I carrying it?

Don't buy expensive knifes....damn that was easy!
That's an option. My preference is U.S. made, "better" steel, manual, about 3", and light. Hard to do for under $100. So really inexpensive doesn't fit my personal preferences.

If I had to use any folding knife to pry a stuck chain it would probably be a Seb, at least my 25.

IMO 'used' knives only look bad when they have that ONE glaring scratch. Once the whole thing is covered in dings and scratches they look sweet. Gotta start somewhere!

I recommend several easy to carry dirty job options. I'll generally carry two knives, a pioneer and a big knife. But I love the Swiss tech tools, I have the pliers looking one on my key chain which takes up very little real estate and is solid steel construction. Even the most basic wallet slot tools work well also, like the kobalt ones from lowes. Using your high end knife for whatever you want is your prerogative but having more appropriate tools for the job doesn't have to take up noticeable space either.

I definitely worry about that. I have different categories for my knives, as I'm sure many here do. They are as follows:

1. Safe queens. Never carried or used
2. Pocket jewelry. Will carry and open letters
3. Users. Will use and cut most things. No abuse.
4. Fallback knives. Beaters. Don't care if they break.

Each category is generally less expensive than the last, but there are occasionally exceptions. I have one Hinderer beater, and I cherish that knife above all others because it has been through absolute hell and still functions flawlessly. I trade, buy, and sell A LOT. I have to keep them categorized this way so that I can maintain my "fix" with new and different knives. If you really love a knife, your love for it will only grow with use. But choose wisely :)

Agreeing with most everyone in here along with yourself. We are your enablers. Every since my first CRK I too was worried about getting it beat up. Ever since the first snail trail I said to hell with it and actually carried it more and more. Since then I have got probably 5 or 6 knives over the 400 dollar price range (not that I paid that much) but ever since then I would say 80% of the knives I carry are more high end.

& honestly if it comes down to it and I needed to use a knife to ensure my survival or my life with I wouldn't mind using any priced knife. When it comes to the more expensive ones.. It ultimately comes down to if you really want it or not.

I follow this practice.

Despite dialogue about use/abuse, I am of the opinion that the biggest single threat to our EDC folders is loss. The easiest way to mitigate against loss is by reducing acquisition cost ... without significant sacrifice in functionality. This is where the CS Voyagers, KaBar Mules, Ontario RATs excel. Stepping it up a notch or so is the Benchmades (especially the Adamas), Emersons, many Spydercos and the like.

Indulge me this analogy, I have two Cummins turbo diesel 4x4s; one is a 16 years old with 180,000 miles, some scratches, rust here and there, 35s and a plow. Though well maintained, it's my hunting truck, woods truck, beach truck and dirty work truck - the other, a much newer one, tows on the interstates and lives a comparatively pampered life. I obtain functionality, pride of ownership and happiness from both depspite the delta in mission profiles.

I really enjoy owning, carrying and using my Sebenza 25; but I will use with abandon one of my CS Voyagers much more readily. I obtain satisfaction from both of them.

So, to answer the OP's question: yes, I do care about "rougher" use of my higher priced folders and enjoy the daylights out of my much more modestly priced pieces.

Price should not be what stops you from carrying what you want. Look at how you live, the type of personnel you deal with on a daily basis, and what you enjoy. More importantly is your personality. Just imagine the ego badasserey boost a timid white shirt cubicle dweller gets EDCing a 9" Bowie for opening letters and boxes. [emoji41]

If the blade is fragile and cannot handle actual real world use, was it really worth the money? That does not mean a paring knife can perform the same tasks as a cleaver.

I beat everything I own.

Dont be concerned - use the snot out of your knives.

Far too many buy safe queens in order to only take pictures of them to post on the forums as it is. Just sad.

I would suggest you use them, but don't "use the snot out" of them. Just use them for knife tasks.

On the subject of knife safe queens, I own one folder that I will not use. I own some Randall's that I won't use at this point as I have other knives that fulfill their purpose. Plus, all of those have sharpened secondary edges and that puts them into the fighter group and I have no reason to carry a fighter (even for a survival knife which is what I purchased them for initially).

But I have many knives that I have never used and I suspect they will remain that way as I keep acquiring more knives. I don't collect, so they are just there for my enjoyment from time to time.

Im the kind of guy who doesnt care about or want to see your safe queens. Show me how well your equipment holds up. If you got a knife that you use the crap out of and it holds a edge Im impressed. Show me a knife thats never been used and just wiped down with a cloth and I wint pay attention. Same with guns. Tell me how it cycles and if it groups well. If you never shot it because its just your showpiece then you can shove it up your ***

Um, okay.
