Concern with damaging an expensive EDC?

So... thinking about this for day and reading the replies, I'm likely to not use a nicer knife as a pry bar. I'll either have to not use it in those situations, which means carrying it less, or have to to carry a multi-tool or 2nd knife, which I really dislike during the week.

While I did scratch up my Benchmade, the blade cleaned up well. And I knew that worst case they'd put a new blade on it for $30 (may be more, but that's what I recall). May have to stay with lower cost options if I don't want to carry two tools. Maybe a keychain prying tool would work.

Zt has the same blade replacement policy and crk will replace the blade as well it just costs more. I believe zt is 30-40$ and crk is 130 and you get to keep your old blade with crk

I usually buy my higher end knives lightly used off of the forum so I am not scared to actually use them since they already have a scratch or two. I have numerous new knives that I bought to EDC but don't since they are new and I have so many that have already seen some use, i.e. bought a used CRK Umnumzaan for $300 that was barely used but saved well over $100 and willingly carry and use it in my rotation.

Count me among those SAK/MT carries, who does it just to avoid things like that. If you aren't comfortable with on-person carry, try putting them in a bag or somewhere inside your car/vehicle

Go ahead and use your knife as a knife and carry a Widgy pry bar on your key ring.
You can even add a SCREWPOP – SCREWDRIVER then you'll be good to go.

I use mine jut like any knife. But I always try to carry a production knife in my sweatshirt/coat front hand pocket for the real tough jobs that might cause damage. Or if I am on the farm or out in the woods, a fixed blade.

It is always good to carry a multi-tool on you, and/or a mini multi-tool. I always have a mini on me, and a full size in the right situation.

Carry a nice knife for responsible knife stuff. Carry a multi tool for everything else.

Yep. Of course "nice" will vary from person to person. I keep a larger multitool in my vehicles for times I don't have any tools with me and often a small bag of basic tools. Sometimes it amazes me just what I do carry inside my vehicles toolwise. I carry the little Leatherman Squirt PS4 in my pocket all the time attached to my keys. It wouldn't be big or strong enough for the tire chain operation. I have small pry bars also but I find that if they are small enough to fit inside a pocket, the edge often is sharp enough to cause some discomfort, so I don't do that. Also I have enough junk in my pockets already to add a prybar.

Simple to be a Monday morning QB, carry something else for that job, but if I was stuck in the snow and all I had on me was one of my 'nice' knives.......that bitch would get used to get my butt back on the road!!

I am one of those guys that tends to be a baby when it comes to using my nicer knives. I carry them and use them but definitely shy away from the anything goes philosophy.
As it has been said many times before right tool for the right job. That is why I almost always have a prybar, a small folding knife or razor knife as well as my main carry knife.
Hate to admit it but I probably could just get away with the prybar and small knife but enjoy carrying something nice with me.
To be perfectly honest some of my knives are man jewelry as much as they are a tool. I know that goes against a main reason for having a knife just being real. I am not a hard use type of guy in general.
On those days that I need my knife as a tool first I have a plethora of nice ones I don't mind using.
Ramble, ramble, ramble:D
Cheers

I use mine all the time, though "high end" and "expensive are relative terms. Mine was something like $80 many years ago, and quite costly to me back then. It caused such a ruckus with my wife (now ex wife) that ultimately purchases like my EDC led to the much more EXPENSIVE divorce.

The reverse of that is to keep something in the car. I recently broke my Chinese pot metal Boker tactical knife prying some roots so I replaces it with a KABAR 1245 tanto I'm not sure I could break that.

Understood Chris, and I do the same, but if you are in a friend's car and have NOTHING but a nice knife and it's the ONLY way of getting back on the road??
Use the nice knife!
I always carry a beater and one of my knicer knives!
Joe

I like to use mine. But then, I don't have any one knife over about $400. And I also carry multiples. One to be very sharp AND look pretty. Another for average cutting, and also have many beaters scattered around in case I may be asked to do something stupid. I'm not big into the prybar scene. But let's face it, there are those occasions where the only course of action, that seems appropriate , is to baton the edge into something (like a watch back), to lightly pry it off.

But I also like to live on the edge. You people probably won't believe this, but I have a 2000 Honda Accord Coupe, with 80,000 miles on it. The wild and crazy guy that I am, if I'm not riding my 2010 Honda Fury, then I'm driving that amazing 2000 Accord, with leather seats, out on the regular streets. I know, insane, right? [emoji41][emoji23]. Krai--zeeee.

My beater knife used to be a $20.00 knife now it's a spyderco manix 2 and yes I would pry a chain or anything else if I had to. Worst case I break it and have to buy a pretty new one, worser case I break it doing what the tool is not designed for and a fragment shoots in my eye.
Either way I am
Getting a new knife.
I honestly have a knife or two (dozen) that just don't see combat time . Not in the rotation so to speak.
Peace all.
Enjoy , no ...wallow in the addiction.
I'm still in search of the holy grail knife.

I have lots of higher end midtechs I use to cut tape or letters. My lower end knives like my Spydercos and Benchmades get used. There is one that I am dying to try use or carry one day. It is a rare mint Plus "P" Sebenza. But I love the way it is made when compared to the Large BG42 and newer 21's. It is thicker, tougher , stronger, opens more smooth and locks open with the right type of "thunk" and closing it...oohh ohhh closing it is a dream. That detent is set just right so no hard opening ik the new models. Maybe one day when I find out I am terminally ill will actually carry and use that knife. After I do, it will have devalued by about 50%. That's why I don't use certain knives. The value lost on them is too much. No way am I going to cut through some barb wire or tin can which would cost me $700 on that one task alone...anyone would have to be a moran to do so.

The "P" sebenza has history and will just get more valuable (as any early and rare CRK knives) . They belong in a museum.

I never edc one of my knives that cost more than 300.00. Just don t feel comfortable doing it realizing that an emergency could arise requiring some abuse of my blade.
