CPK Pet Thread

This 6 YO thoroughbred mare was to be humanely euthanized due to Trigeminal-mediated headshaking not long ago.
This condition made her difficult to handle, ride, and just be around in general.

Got skeptical after getting some background and asked the owner if I could try to turn her course around.

It was lots of work with more than a few sketchy scenarios along the way, but she made it.
We got to win one for the right reasons this time, and so I owe a thanks to BF and the CPK crowd. You help a beat up struggling horseman keep his strength up while doing silly things like proving points about “people problem” horses.

Sweet and quiet now with a likely future of high-performer. Her stall is hopefully one that becomes one of my last stops on the way out of the barn each evening for a long time.
Could watch her travel all day.
Thought maybe you may enjoy too.
Gonna have to do before videos next time…

That’s such a heartwarming story with a beautiful and happy ending. What a gorgeous horse.Thank You, for not only doing what you did, but for sharing this with us too. Bless you M Montshine 🙏🙏

The heterochromia suits the pooch well!
Thank you! Quite often people will say that and then follow up with, "Can she see out of that eye?" I've never noticed her not having any disability.
Now our other doggie I could tell she had vision problems when we got her as a pup and it's just progressed worse over the years. This pic is her and me from about 2 1/2 years ago.

Awesome you made such good progress! I had never known of that issue with horses and imagine it drives them bonkers. People with trigeminal neuralgia are miserable but nerve blocks can really help.
Veterinary medicine and therapy must be so harder not getting subjective info, and honestly the fact that animals are generally nicer than people. Thank you for being patient and persistent!

Letty is always a vigilant watcher...

We’ve been pretty fortunate over the years it sounds like. The working dogs we’ve been near have had very few problems with the condition from what I can recollect currently.

The horses with blue eyes have been more of a concern though. Enough uveitis that we have to take precautions with them even at our modest altitude.

What’s wild is how quickly the ones that had to have eyes removed is how well they adapted, and appeared to be, and I use this VERY loosely; unaffected.
Never ceases to amaze me. And I think of it often enough…

Not sure if you caught her debut, but that black mare is also named Letty!!
Killer pic of you two. Looks like a good buddy!
To good health!🥃

Apologies for not making one post here everybody…catching up too quickly.

A lot of days are ROUGH staying confident in the “get it done” phase, because the vets are just as stuck as the horse trainers willing to try.
Doubts creep in quick some days.
They just can’t tell you where it hurts, so I kinda becomes a faith driven enterprise.
I feel for the vets. It can get downright not fun for them too. Like playing darts sometimes.

Just try and get the horses to a place where you feel like they are coming out of those neurological pain feedback loops the humans experience and ride the hair off ‘em.
(lovingly and wisely)

She’s got a HUGE heart so that helped.

Really didn’t expect to catch this kind of attention on this one, so thanks again er’body!
Kinda felt like a win was needed around here, so I took a shot!

Sat noon break :)
