What is he, like a pit/malinois?
There's no background on the dog. Was brought in by animal control. Nathan mentioned Dutch shepherd and in the right light, you can almost pick up bit of a brindle under the surface.

He doesn't bark or whine.

He yelped once when I accidentally caught him a light blow on the muzzle.

He's woofed / yipped during a few dreams...but never barked yet and apparently never did while in the shelter.

He's a mystery wrapped in an enigma.

He's a good-looking boy whatever his components.

I heard a story once about a game warden that could tell where a duck came from by sticking his finger in the ducks ass. Have you tried that yet?
Your Kobe looks stout with great posture. My Roman (finally) got neutered today. He on the other hand looks and feels like shyte but it had to be done. I reckon that I'm gonna be scarce for a while to watch over him. Adios muchachos...
So, now we have two nutless "males" cohabitating under the same roof? Sounds like typical California to me.

Well, his prey drive is still intact even if his sack isn't.

Just came back from a walk where he side-eyed a possum several feet away and took his shot. He was still looking for it on the way back. (Not a peep out of him. Silent assassin.)

Perfect dog for you then🤭

Looks like he has some Staffordshire in him.
That was our guess. Some sort of shepherd plus pit or staffie or even akita. Really hard to tell without any background info and I'm not inclined to do a DNA test.

This morning he decided that birds might be fun to chase, but he minded my leash commands. If he were off leash...different ballgame entirely. Lots of training to do...assuming all goes well.

He's a very pleasant boy to be around, and quite the couch potato around the house.

Sleeps through the night, but snores like a freight train for part of it...and, of course, he enjoys his licking time. I may have to put earplugs in.

Another interesting thing...

Yesterday I had an Amazon delivery and other than checking through the window, no visible reaction by Kobe. Guard dog he ain't...at least as far as we know. Who knows what might be the case if someone did something more dastardly than delivering a box?

Anyway, I rely on myself for defense, but since he doesn't bark, at least a tense body alert would send a signal. (I have seen him do that when he hears something he thinks is out of place.)

Congrats again on Kobe, sounds like he’s gonna work out just fine for y’all!

I wouldn't be surprised if his lack of guard dog instincts changes once he realizes his situation isn't temporary; he's home and you're his pack.

I hope so Jonny. We haven't messed around with closing the crate since I reported on that...but he does go all the way in for his meals. (We push his bowl all the way back, so he has to go in.)

Tomorrow is supermarket day for us, and my neighbor who lost his dog a few days after we lost Skyler, wants to take care of him while we're away shopping. (Plus he has a large fenced in yard.) So, that will take care of things for now, temporarily, until we can deal with the potential separation anxiety.

He made it clear that if for some reason we felt that Kobe wasn't a good fit, he'd want to take him. (He doesn't crate his dogs, gives them free rein in the house, has a doggy door and the yard.) I told him that if that day should come, I'd speak to the shelter we adopted from to try to facilitate the transfer...but I told him that we do not "plan" to fail and are bonding with the dog and will do our best to keep him.

At least some options are there for "worst case" but I'm not thinking about failing at the moment.

When I look at him, and because of his beautiful muscle tones, E., I keep thinking there might be some Ridgeback in his lineage ....
