CPK Pet Thread

My condolences.
I’m glad he found you and was given a fair shake.
My current dog is an ass.
He’s nipped a few kids, and is just generally an a$$h01e. He’s great with the family. Anybody else - it’s a crapshoot.
No need for sad faces. He’s a good dog except with strangers. I think I’ve mentioned before that I think he has vision problems. That’s based on watching him through the years. He also hasn’t nipped anybody since he was one or two years old. And it’s always “nip and run away”. It’s fear based. Which isn’t great. But after he’s around somebody a minute or two he is fine. Or if a perfect stranger (especially women) talk to him in a sing song voice he is instantly their friend.

He must copy somebody. They do say behavior of dogs and their owners converges over time ... :)
His father tried to take out the entire litter the day after they were born. He was the runt and the only pup with the dwarf gene showing (supposed to be pit/basset hound but I think his mother was actually basset/beagle). The woman who owned the dogs carried him everywhere to keep him out of harms way. When he was the last pup left he went to a rescue where I picked him up. Afraid of everything at first.
Nobody has ever commented I have a sing song voice. Something more akin to a boulder being dragged over gravel.

I'm not flexible enough for that!

Sometimes you wish, right ? 🤣

That convergence thing is real though.

My wife's dog (the mastiff), is the sweetest dog you'll ever meet. Except for the few times when he (or the wife) doesn't like somebody; he barks at the USPS guy, for instance. UPS is fine :)

Mine (the Rottie) has happy and grumpy days. And when he's focused on something it's hard to distract him. "Selective listening skills", like the wife blames me for having sometimes :)

So, @Jo the Machinist already knew my dirty little secret, but on Friday the missus and I decided that living without a dog in the house was not an improvement, so we decided to take a trip to the humane society facility from which we had adopted Skyler 10 years ago.

What we knew going in was that we didn't want a puppy because I didn't want to start from square one. I wanted a dog with a year or two under its belt, hopefully housebroken and with basic leash manners or understanding of commands.

We also needed the facility to know that if we took a dog, the first week or so would be considered "fostering" until we knew it was a good enough fit, that severe separation anxiety or destructive behavior could be a sufficient reason to return the dog. They understood this and were cool with it, knowing our past history.

So, we found this guy who was brought in a month or two back from Animal Control. He's between one and two years old, of unknown lineage. (There are lots of guesses, but no way to verify.)

I've been working with him the past couple of days since we got him home from the shelter. He has a very nice disposition with both of us. Tina named him "Kobe" though the facility had him listed as "Keeper". I'm hoping he's going to work out.

He marks more than any dog I've ever seen, but thankfully, always outdoors, and only once on the deck. He has had no accidents in the house, but I'm getting a lot of exercise keeping him off of our bed. Small potatoes.

He seems to have forgotten any of the commands he learned, or how to walk well on a lead since he left the facility, but he is responding to my training on the lead and accepts the corrections pretty well. I seem to have to do fewer as the day goes on...but have to start again the following morning to reiterate where we had left off.

So far, I've got him into the crate for his meals and biscuits, but haven't closed it yet, as I work to earn his trust. It's not even two full days yet that he's been here.

Anyway, we're hoping he can become a permanent resident and part of our little family. Time will tell. Jo has been a great friend keeping me sane while I bounced thoughts off her.

Here's a few shots of Kobe:

Congratulations! In my experience that marking lightens up after they have established that they own the place.

Momma had another photo shoot… this sweet lil guy passed his therapy dog test the other day. A couple more hoops and he can go spread some doggy love around at hospitals, schools and the like. Pretty cool

Nothing brings smiles to patients and staff quite like a pooch. The security dogs at one of our hospitals provide lots of comfort to the staff as well.
