Hey guys, I need some advice please šŸ™

I got home yesterday and Kimber was bleeding and I found a hole in his side. It looks like it’s just his skin that’s ripped/cut

IDK what he did for sure, but he’s always rolling around and scooting in the dirt and digging. Must have snagged it on a nail or something on the fence outside?

I took him to the vet today and they just shaved him and cleaned up the wound. They didn’t put any stitches in, but said they could if I wanted them to. I’m now questioning it, as the hole is just open.

I didn’t realize it was still so open till after I paid and left. I haven’t had to deal with something like this before. I would have thought for sure they would have put in stitches as a standard, and not sure why they didn’t. Not sure if that’s standard practice or not?

Question: What would you do? Should I go in tomorrow to ask to get stitches put in? (I’m thinking maybe I should). I have horrible fine dirt in the backyard and don’t want anything in the wound. He loves to dig, roll around and scoot in it unfortunately if I take my eyes off him for just a minute.

He’s in fairly decent spirits, just seems like he’s hurting. He’s eating and drinking still so that good.

Here he is before they came in to get him

I’m not a vet and have no formal training but I have had lot of animals. I would prefer stitches in that wound. I would at least inquire as to why they did not put them in. And if there wasn’t a compelling reason, I would go back for some. I hope he’s feeling okay and heals quickly. Also I hope it’s not too stressful for either of you.

When they brought him back in, it looked fairly sealed, so I thought maybe they put glue on it or something and didn’t really question it. When I got home and laid him down, I saw it was still open and kind of leaking out on the bed.

I think I probably do need to go back tomorrow for stitches tomorrow. Thank you šŸ™

I’d prefer stitches, too, C. And antibiotics for a week. Thankfully, it doesn’t appear very deep.

Fingers crossed!
I should have mentioned it, but didn’t want to make my initial post too long. They did give me pain killers for him, some antibiotics, and some antiseptic spray to keep it clean 2X a day. Luckily, he’s got a huge layer of fat on his ribs lol. I’m sure it’s painful as heck for the poor dude

Thank you

I’m honestly shocked the vet didn’t push hard or insist on stitching up that wound.
I’d be looking for a new vet unless there was some sort of misunderstanding.

Unfortunately this is the only vet within about 3 hours of me, and is still about 1.25 hours away as is (I’m in a small town).

I guess technically she did say (after I asked) they could put stitches in if I wanted, but I didn’t say yes, or no as we got to talking what had happened. I went in thinking for sure it would have required stitches and been mandatory šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

I agree with the others I would stitch it or go back and have the vet do it. Chances are it would be ok without, but it's to easy for them to pull it playing and just takes longer to heal if left as is.

Glad it's not bothering him too much.

Sometimes they are reluctant because of depth and possible infection. Our big guy had a bite wound that looked similar but deeper. It was stitched but they added a drainage.

Definitely have it stitched.

Dogs are tough and can take much more pain than you or I can. That can lead to a huge infection and even Sepsis if not kept perfectly clean, and a dog will just shrug it off until it becomes nearly untreatable.

Stitches won’t help if it’s already healing, the Vet would need to cut the old skin off to get to new skin for it to heal properly.

Keep up with the antibiotics, but not so much that the fine dirt and dust sticks to it.

It will take a lot of extra effort on your part, and it’s certainly worth it.

Prayers for the both of you

That thought did cross my mind after I posted.
I’m used to my type-A ā€œattitudedā€ Vet basically telling me what she’s wants to do with my pup no matter the cost, but she’s not the type to take advantage of people so I always give in.
Hopefully you can get this all situated. Good thing your Kimber isn’t a breed that likes to defy every order you give them! šŸ˜‚

Dogs are super tough, as are cats. They take what we would cry for. Not sure why, it must be something in their survival DNA.

It’s crazy how resilient they are.
My Heeler had this thorn stuck in the webbing between her toes on her back left foot for what had to be a week and she was running around like nothing was wrong.
I noticed her licking it so I pushed the wound and it popped right out. She went right back to running around like a typical maniac like it never happened.

They can take MUCH more than we can.

What should make us cry in pain, they can just shrug off. It’s amazing what they can endure, yet it’s alarming because you just sometimes don’t know what’s going on.

If you truly know your dog, you will know, but it’s hard. They hide it so well.
