CPKhuk

thank you!

feels like a real knife, now. All hard and stuff

the handle scales are curing tonight and I should be able to get them fit up and profiled tomorrow. I got a sneaky plan which is pretty weird, not sure whether I'll do it or not. It'll take a fair amount of extra work and might not have the effect, or any effect, that I'm hoping for

also, I'm playing around with the idea of oxidizing this thing. A2 is not great at stain resistance, but on the other hand I love me a hand rubbed blade. On the other other hand, a nice black layer will help make my fuck ups vanish 🤔
That looks AMAZING!

With the lines on this puppy, I'd personally prefer it as shiny as possible! It would be a pity not to show off all those contours!

the inwardly curved portion of the edge, to about 5" in front of the guard, has no secondary bevel. It's a good characteristic for wood working type jobs, like taking the bark off, splitting, shaving and generally draw knifey type things. So, as I'm hand sanding this thing, I'm also sharpening that curved edge.

It's terrifying and I keep cutting chunks of sandpaper off. I'm at 400 grit and it's a little silly already

It's slow going work, and I'm being extra careful not to cut myself. If things go to plan, the hand sanding will, (for now) be done. I do plan to run this knife through its paces to see if it performs the way that I hope it will, so I'll have to clean it up before I sell it. There's no reason to expect it'll fare much different than the first one, wrt performance, although I think I was able to get a little more weight off it and it seems like it might balance a little nicer. The terotuf handle will definitely be an improvement. Judging by the feedback I'm getting through hand finishing, the steel is definitely a little harder than the first

so excited to get the handle on and an edge! Or, more edge

I will probably never end up getting my hands on any fruits of this project, but I am loving getting to follow along with the development and getting to hear your thoughts. This thread and project has just been a real treat to follow. I love good, thoughtful design, and that has always been something you provide. Now I get to see you iterate as a maker and designer, and that is cool.

that is very kind of you to say, thank you so much!

what you are about to see is not something that will go into the CPK production of this blade, but something that I thought was worth a try at least, for this one. I picked up some hockey pucks at the second hand store a little while ago for making tools for hand sanding. The durometer of the rubber seems just about right for that purpose. Hockey pucks don't bounce much, which means they dissipate energy and it occurred to me that they might bring about a benefit for a heavy chopper like this one. So, I cut one up today and made inserts for the handle of this knife. I don't know if it will make any difference and in any case have no way to measure it. But, it's dorky and fun, so why not?

I’d go hand rubbed on this first model just to really show off your work. Subsequent models however I’d definitely oxidize. My 2 cents. Great work it’s definitely shaping up into a gorgeous blade!

thanks very much!

This will be the last of this specific design, and I greatly doubt I'll be making many more khuks similar to this, at least in the short term- it's a ton of hard work.
the hand sanding is sloooow going, but it's starting to look pretty nice. Surprisingly difficult to get that fuller finished nicely, but I'm all in now and am going to figure it out. Hopefully that part will be done by the end of the day, yesterday was groceries and yard maintenance. Usually I work 9:30-1 every night, and a few hours during the day, but we binged out on Stranger Things last night so I just went to bed and that was that.
