So a little background on this thread. I found BladeForums in the later months of last year when I set out to find a new knife as a Christmas present to myself. I'd always carried a knife for as long as I can remember. Originally Old Timers pilfered from my dad's toolbox, graduating to one-handers when they became a thing. I've carried Smith & Wesson monstrosities and SOGs. It was a picture of the Vallotton in the "Ugliest Knives" thread that got me hooked. I ordered the Vallotton and a LW Native5 as my Christmas present, and the rest is (expensive) history.

Since then I've handled and/or owned almost every production Spyderco, and have paired my knife collection back to an M390 Military. That, and the Vallotton. I figured that the knife that started it all would do well to finish my "collection." (If you can call two knives a collection.) However, I'm making this Vallotton my own. I'm drawing on the expertise of several craftsmen from the forums to make this project happen. I wanted a knife that memorialized knife collecting for me, but was marked as definitely my own. This thread's for those who may want to see work-in-progress pics. And it's a place for me to shamelessly post pictures. :D

So it starts with this beauty:

I've already sent it to Josh at RazorEdgeKnives to all of the stainless furniture blacked out. I'm looking for a darker, more elegant look than stock, and it starts with this step. Additionally, the cerakoting adds a texture that compensates for the lack of grip on the stock model.

Next step will see the knife headed Steve Ketchen at Sketchenscales for some gorgeous, dark hardwood scales.

Finally, it'll head to Gary Graley for a custom belt sheath. The big issue for me with the Vallotton isn't the weight, but the bulk. Carrying it on my belt will resolve my only real issue with the design.

So that's the process! I'll update this thread with pictures as each step is finished.

Here's an update with pictures (courtesy of Josh):

Gary's creation really puts this knife over the top, in my estimation. He came up with a beautiful sheath to compliment the Vallotton.

I'll have some of my own pictures up in the next week or so.

As promised, here're some of my own pictures. Cannot get over how well this project turned out. I'm very, very pleased with the results.

Very cool journey to have set out on. Looking forward to the results. The Vallotton is a very interesting choice!

Thanks, gentlemen! The Vallotton has something to it that has always arrested my attention.

I'll post pics as I get it back from each craftsman. If (and that's an admittedly big if) my imagination proves accurate, it should turn out well. A beast of a knife dressed to the nines.

What design of sheath are you going for ?
Vertical , Horizontal , Angled ?

Gary makes wonderful sheaths I can't wait to see this completed

Ken

PS - please tell me you are keeping one of your Gayle Bradley's

It'll be a standard vertical sheath. Gary recommended that particular carry. And, to be honest, I'll lean toward his advice, as I don't normally carry a belt sheath.

I'd have loved to keep at least one of my GBs. But at the time it was untenable. No job, big necessary travel plans, car trouble, baby on the way--kinda all compounded to make keeping all my knives untenable. The Military and the Vallotton are the only two knives I have at the moment...pimping the Vallotton with some of the proceeds from my other knives that I "allowed" myself to keep.

Cest la vie. :o

FP...I lived vicariously through you on a few GB builds you created now this! I can't wait to see pics along the way! If I was you Id ask G2 to keep it an extra few days and capture some of those unbelievable pictures he takes!

Thanks man! And that's a great idea.

A little piece of me just died :)

Ken

Me too, or at least when I sold them. :( They all went to good homes, though.

Edit: Though I'll admit, Ken, that it always does my heart good to see you post yours ever now and again!

At the risk of sidetracking this thread briefly , you don't have any of those custom GB scales laying around do you ?

Ken

No worries on sidetracks. I won't have anything on-topic to post until the knife comes back from Josh.

And no, I don't. The scales went out with their respective knives. But hey, Steve knows how to remake them. :D

What about pocket clip ?
Does this have a pocket clip ?
If so will you be leaving it on ?

No clip. Steve won't even be drilling holes in the new scales. And hopefully the black cerakote obscures the holes in the bolsters. It's gonna be a sheath knife all the way!
