CRK heat treat question

Yeah, take from 1st hand experience, what that guy is claiming has no credibility.
But, I do wonder the time span all the blades were drilled, has he drilled any Damascus blades ???? If he did, is he claiming D.T. and C. Nichols also lie about their HT ???? Is he butt hurt because CRK won't touch a modified knife, which in turn discourages people from buying a modified CRK. Are the 300 that he's drilled were requested from owners or is he pushing the CRK mod.
I have read that CRK has asked people that do mods not to alter a CRK.

He seems to offer the drilling as a service while also pre-ordering so as to resell the drilled knives.

I think the drilled knives look like utter crap but that’s beside the point. The absence of HRC data, his dismissal of it as irrelevant when compared to his experienced ‘feel’ greatly dilutes his claims but I do think I’ll do an HRC on my blades just to see what’s up. A friend is a machinist so I’m sure he has the machine or access.

You do know a HRC tester will leave a permanent mark on the blade?

A better test wold be to evaluate cutting/sharpening to see if the results are normal.

I understand it leaves a dimple. Yes. I’m ok with that. I’m not planning on reselling as I wanted a knife for edc and am not a collector. I’ll see if the testing can be done on an unobtrusive part. Bedsides. If it comes in spec I can validate the blade!

The CRK is also my first ‘high end’ knife. I’m running an old spring assisted Kershaw that’s just pretty junky so I’m not experienced to know what a good sharpening/performance ratio should look like. Decent with Japanese chef knives though!

His video is nonsense, and has numerous indications of just being a clickbait troll: No identity (only name is "Tom"). Claims to be a 30 year knifemaker and dealer for high end knives, yet zero contact info. and just showed up on Blogger and Youtube in Dec. 2020. Claims 300 modded Sebenzas, with no evidence of that, incl. any seen with end users. Appears to have little or no knowledge of materials or tool use (i.e. it is possible to drill hardened steel, but there's no true way to determine "Hardness" just based on tool feel, etc )...Dont feed the troll...

This guy is a few fries short of a happy meal if you ask me.

So is it 100 CRK blades he drilled holes in…or 300?

420J in a 110? 🤦‍♂️

He had two blades from CRK that “fought” him drilling the hole? Did he switch his drill bit out after that?

Oh…ps buddy, CRK’s heat treat only suffers because the Sunfire was discontinued so they had to resort to a softer “truck dashboard HT.”

This guy also admits to selling CRK’s with “no heat treat” to customers. Only keeping the good ones for himself.🤦‍♂️

Great informative video…what a waste of time. Lol.

Anyone ever start a topic and then think to themselves that maybe they should have Googled that shit first? No? Just me?
Anyone think it’s better to ask people in a specific site on the exact topic who know the content than waste time on searches especially when you don’t know the subject matter? No? Just me then…

They can remove the blade and do the Rockwell test on part of the tang that doesn't show unless the knife is disassembled.

My understanding is that Chris Reeve was involved in the creation of both S35 and S45, so if anyone knows how to properly heat treat those steels, it should be CRK.

I'm going to ask you some questions real quick. These are real questions, not being snarky. Do you have any experience with Chris Reeve knives? Do you know anything about the company? Do you have an idea of how many knives they have sold over the years? Do you know how many awards they have won?

I'd do some research on those questions if you don't. A quick Google search will give you a good idea. Now after you have done that, ask yourself why you even entertain the thought that some crazy hillbilly on YouTube has uncovered a secret that no one else has, even though CRK sells thousands of knives a year and has done so for 30+ years. Logic and reasoning would tell you that if there were so many defective knives out there, that there would be an uproar over this scandal and the news would be easy to find. There isn't. His claims are baseless, he provides absolutely no evidence, and he is most likely doing this to get gullible people to click on his videos and spread the word so that he gets more ad revenue.

Case in point, the “lock bar flex” on the 31 models. Within weeks of those knives going out people were complaining about it.

Like was said, if their HT was bad, or they weren’t treating them at all, the world would have burnt at this point.

Buyer beware, that guy is probably “testing” and modding those $30 clones that can be found on eBay.

YouTube experts: you could fill a couple of toxic waste dump sites with them: and probably should!

Ill put one of my Sebenza's or Inkosii under my hardness tester at work next week... just need to find a spot on the blade that wouldnt be affecting the washers.

I have full confidence they will be right where they say they are.

Thoughts?

cool that you'd do that for the op and maybe for your own knowledge too...but my thought is why bother.....

its not gonna be off that much, if at all...ill bet.

I’ll be super interested too! I’ve no doubt the results will be the same as those on the birth card. I’ll be needing to send mine off to be tested.

I’m not doubting CRK. I’ve spent nearly $1k on their knives sight unseen and purely on their rep. As I’ve said clearly, I’ve no opinion or agenda. I’m just asking if anyone has actually tested their own kit. So far none have said they have. I’ve said repeatedly that I am not convinced by the Tuber.

Your idea of logic is flawed as your deductive reasoning is more aligned with “because others haven’t, neither shall I”. If such an approach works for you then great. Not my philosophy. If you’re bothered by me then, ignore me, I won’t be offended. All you’ve done is attack me for the temerity of being curious.

Relax dude, I didn't attack you. You would be able to tell if your knife wasn't heat treated properly. I've stabbed mine through coconuts, pried things opened with it, and then cut things with no issue. No edge damage either. And if it was soft, people who use their knives would be able to tell and you would have heard about it. Logic isn't flawed.

Get some: they won't disappoint you!
(Got 2; with 2 more ordered...)

I think CRK does run their knives a little softer than some for durability. But mine was definitely heat treated and holds an edge well.
