CRK heat treat question

Gosh. This is harder than I thought it would be. Given the attention to detail this hobby requires I’d never have suspected such reluctance to actually know the details.

I guess even inanimate objects can be cults of personalities.

I had a TacOps rifle. Long considered the pinnacle of accuracy. It didn’t shoot straight. Sent it back and got an apology. It happens. There are many brands that have risen through hard work, innovation and service only to coast on their past achievements snd then decline (Autine…). I’m not suggesting CRK is doing this. I was just wondering if anyone has checked their own kit.

Seems not. This is not a place where convention can be questioned, or even verified.
If you feel the need to verify the numbers: I get that.
But I'd bet that things check out as they should...
Good luck!

I've never tested the Rockwell hardness of my CRK blades. I've only had experience using the ones I've had over the course of years. First one bought in 2002 and last one bought in 2016; a total of five CRKs.

They all performed as expected. Their steel is run a little softer than some other companies that use S35VN, S30V, etc. They still performed very well. In 2013 or so, CRK even increased their blade hardness a couple points or so. If the youtuber says that CRK doesn't heat treat their blades he's a clickbait quack, pure and simple.

I for one will be interested to see the results that you two get back after testing the blades. Not because I think they'll be run softer than stated, just because I have a lot of interest in metallurgy in general and would like to test all of my blades if I had the chance to. I've also had 5 CRK's and I believe them to be the pinnacle of production knives simply for their unmatched tolerances.

I’ll let you know when I get mine tested.

Sure.

I’m getting one more CRKs within the next couple weeks. A total of two from dealers brand new and one in the secondary market. One of which is a 45. So I’ll have samples across a small time span and different steels. Hardly statistically relevant but better than farting around with Occam’s Razor.

As I wouldn’t know a fake from a real ill post up pics when they get here to avoid errors.

Just how many CRK knives have you purchased without knowing this critical bit of information?!
About 320….

3. Two from registered dealers and one second hand. I’ve read the fake CRK threads so I’m comfortable that I got a real one and the seller confirmed which dealer he bought his from so it’ll be easy to verify through paperwork.

I’ve bought and sold tens of thousands of dollars of guns in my time I know how to verify a paper trail and provenance of an item but I also like getting other verification (if that wasn’t already clear enough… 😂) from people who’ve handled the item.

Other reason for the multiple purchase is one of the items is for my son and the third is a different blade. I want to compare an Insingo with a DP and see what I prefer.

Ok?

Fascinating story arc. Shows up a week ago, strikes out in a few sales thread then buys three CRK knives despite being deeply suspicious of their quality.

Three Hundred and Twenty. Did you drill holes into all of them?

Dude. I’m not suspicious. I’m curious. There’s a difference. I stuck out because I wasn’t a paid member and couldn’t PM folks or they just didn’t want to sell to me. Fair enough. Not hat hard to buy from dealers. In fact, I’ve heard a rumor that that’s why they’re dealers.

But I appreciate your sleuthing. Maybe you’d like to be useful and sleuth the HRC of a few CRK blades…

Your example is of one item that was defective, that happens. What crazy youtube guy is claiming is that the majority of CRK have bad heat treatments. It's an apples to oranges comparison.

Why are you in this thread? You’re not interested in the outcome of any testing and you reject the idea of any need to even find out. Fine. What are you doing here?

Dug the sled out today, HT is no longer suspect!

I'll admit, I don't care about the hardness of these blades, but I don't know why people who are super interested in collecting knives wouldn't want to know either.
It seems like it might be something that collectors would want to know.

Everyone I’ve ever heard of who sent a CRK knife in for HRC testing had it come back within spec.

And that YT channel has literally all the signs of bullshite, front and center. Fella is clearly as fake as they come.
