CRK heat treat question

Since Chris Reeve had a hand in the development in S35 & S45(VN): I would imagine that he knows how to heat treat it properly...

I think CRK does run their knives a little softer than some for durability. But mine was definitely heat treated and holds an edge well.
Yeah, Nathan Carothers has mentioned several times that he loves the company and knives, but that their HT is not optimized and they run them a bit soft. Probably makes sense. Knowing the stupid things people do, rather sacrifice a bit of edge retention for toughness to reduce broken blade warranty claims.

I’ll be super interested too! I’ve no doubt the results will be the same as those on the birth card. I’ll be needing to send mine off to be tested.
If you have "no doubt" about the results, then why the need to send yours off to be tested?

Which leads me to:
I’m not doubting CRK.

It's not coming across that way.

Guess what. I don’t care. I’m just interested in a data point. You’re making it like I’m questioning something sacred. Trust but verify. Since when was that so bad?

It’s like I’m calling your daddy a liar or something. It’s just a knife, it doesn’t love you back.

I was just asking. Your statements I quoted seemed at odds with themselves.

CRK is a long standing, highly respected company with a pretty much untarnished reputation for quality.

Do whatever you feel is best.

Taking this as an abstract then we should never question anything if it’s earned a reputation?

Everyone makes mistakes, everyone has an opportunity and in some cases, an obligation to improve what they know and can be improved. CRK made a small error on shipping the wrong blades and it was only discovered and rectified because one owner who didn’t know better asked CRK to check that the blade was indeed 45 and not 35 when he sent in two brand new knives for warranty issues. Hey presto an error was discovered and remedied.

It’s not a challenge to integrity to question. It’s not malevolent to verify. It’s just wanting to know for one’s own satisfaction.

It’s very odd that as consumers there’s a greater willingness to not know than otherwise amongst some here. It’s the same mentality as that Tuber who is saying “I don’t need to HRC the blades to tell me they’re not heat treated or lying about their HRC numbers. I just know because I do…”

Knock yourself out. Have a good time. 👍

Later on today I'm going to test the hardness of Occam's Razor on my YouTube channel. The results may surprise and shock you.

Don't forget to like and subscribe!
🤣 All things being equal...

CRK's heat treatment is on spec. The couple I've seen tested came back at 60 HRC.

I happened to stumble upon this guy's channel a few weeks ago, because he has a video where he claims Benchmade stole his idea to add tip-up carry to the AFCK 🤣

I think the use of Occam's razor is in order here. We have two options:

1. CRK, which has been in business for nearly 30 years, which has won Blade Show's manufacturing quality award 15 times, whose founder invented the steels they use (in collaboration with Crucible), and which is generally regarded as one of the best and most prestigious production knife manufacturers in the world, doesn't know how to heat treat knives.

2. Some random dude on YouTube is a moron.

It's a really close call!

People remember none of what you get right, and all of what someone says you got wrong.

I.e., s110v and maxamet.

Gosh. This is harder than I thought it would be. Given the attention to detail this hobby requires I’d never have suspected such reluctance to actually know the details.

I guess even inanimate objects can be cults of personalities.

I had a TacOps rifle. Long considered the pinnacle of accuracy. It didn’t shoot straight. Sent it back and got an apology. It happens. There are many brands that have risen through hard work, innovation and service only to coast on their past achievements snd then decline (Autine…). I’m not suggesting CRK is doing this. I was just wondering if anyone has checked their own kit.

Seems not. This is not a place where convention can be questioned, or even verified.
