Hello.
Last year I've bought CRKT M16-14SF, which was, in my opinion a "flagship" of this manufacturer.
I gave it to my brother, as a gift.
He used it very gently as ocasionally cary (I can say, by the look - theres almost no mark of use on the blade, or handle), totaly not abusing the knife.
And after ONE year of opening the knife, the thumb stud broke! Yes, You read it correctly, the thumb stud, or blocking pin, just wanished!

And this is for military personel? It's a joke.

Did the thumb stud "break", or did it come unscrewed and fall out? Sometimes screws, and screwed in thumb studs can work loose if they don't have thread locker. I'm guessing it worked loose and fell out.

Whatever the case, according to the CRKT website, they provide replacement parts, including thumb studs. It doesn't say if there is a charge or if the parts are free, but it's worth contacting them to ask.

If they send your brother a new thumb stud, tell him to apply some blue thread locker to the threads.

The thumb stud is missing, that’s far from “totally failed”. Now it does suck because that knife has seen very little use.
It’s also pretty far from being “for military personnel”.

My M16-14SFG had a lock failure after a year to a year and a half of moderate to hard use. It was an ok knife up until that point. Biggest upside we’re the VEFF serrations.

Not the end of the world but I totally understand why it's disheartening. This does give you an opportunity to put in a nicer thumb stud, though. There are tons of aftermarket ones out there and I've found plenty of decent generic ones on the E auction site, most for under $10. I bet CRKT will send you one or even two for free if you explain it was a gift and send them the picture without getting angry in the email.

In my opinion, any knife that needs a second lock to make the primary "lock" safe is a failure. LAWKS is just garbage. But that's beside the point.

This is not a failure. Screws will unscrew. They do that. The screw that holds the temple arm on my Maui Jims nearly fell out the other day. It's something that can happen, so I pay attention to it. While I wouldn't really expect a thumbstud to unscrew itself, I also don't buy CRKTs either.

Why, apart from the obvious issues with quality and value do I not buy CRTK knives? Because once upon a time I did have a CRKT fail on me. The liner lock on one (Red Dog or something like that) failed under pressure on the spine and cut my index finger, requiring 3 stitches. This was pre-LAWKS.

Lol, don't fall for marketing BS. There is NOTHING military about this knife.

As others have said, CRKT is typically fail across the board. Mediocre steel, inconsistent and/or poor heat treatment, poor QC and hit-or-miss with regards to overall fit and finish.

Also as others have said, this is FAR from total failure however.

So you joined the forum just to whine about this? Try using the flippers until they send you a new stud and screw. Drama queen. Or just buy a Spyderco. You wont have to worry about losing the hole.

I have unfortunately own several of their knives over the years due to cool designs and the hope they have improved their build quality and QC, but the truth cannot be denied...CRKT does not make quality knives. They have always been and will be a disappointment.

the thumstud is the stop pin too on this, isn't it?

id email or call crkt and send in under warranty. in the past their warranty service was good.

"Try using the flippers"? Don't You noticed, the thumb stud is a stop pin? The blade won't stand still.
And please, skip the "drama queen" BS in Your posts.

Nope ..."totally failed" means a broken off blade or a lock failure that amputates your fingers etc .

I don't see anything broken at all . The thumb stud probably just unscrewed itself . No loctite ?

Next time buy a Cold Steel . You need a blowtorch to get those thumb studs removed .

Yeah, so "totally failed" means, that I shoud die, because of this? :)
The knife that breaks from fliping is in my opinion, a total failure. I can't even think about using CRKT in the woods.
The thumb probably broke and fall off, it's not easy to unscrew one, I mean, on purpose.

If a thumb stud falling off is a “total failure”, I’d hate to see your reaction to getting an off-center knife in the exchange.

Gentlemen,
my point is the knife is beyond of any use, without the stud. The blade is moving back and forth, and it won't cut anything.
What's the difference if the stud or the blade broke, if one can not use the knife?

Dear friends, You acted like a blond girl from the joke:
- Lady, you won't go any way, you got no air in your tires.
- Yes, but only on the bottom!
