Crosscut Saw Thread

That's a beautiful old Craftsman, probably made by Disston. The end tooth was broken on purpose for the safety of the second bucker's fingers. I use a slim taper file for my rakers.

Interesting Trailtime- was that common practice? Does it adversely affect the saw’s performance?

So I spent the last hour and a half fixing the rakers, I found a hacksaw and blunted the first 4 inches or so so that it would cut the saw and not catch.

I cut down through the middle of the raker's valley and then filled it straight, there's before and after pictures above.

The third picture is my hacksaw blade afterwords

No affect. It's rare to find a western bucking saw with the end teeth complete. Sometimes the tip of the end tooth is filed flat or rounded, though usually just broken off. I have a few with intact end teeth, but they appear to be NOS and were probably never used in the field. I don't see the missing end tooth as often on one man saws, probably because they weren't double bucked as often, though that would be more likely to occur with a big one man.

As with T trailtime , the saws I've seen often the end teeth are rounded or broken, other than a few that never saw real use. Some are missing several on the ends.

I'd say that if there's a difference, its that in bucking saws I've seen it a little less, that the felling saws.

Single bucking is perhaps the reason why.

I'm too busy, and not in town, to do a lot of running around buying this time of year. But sometimes a good opportunity comes up. I picked up this batch of Disston saws today. All from the same place, all owned by someones father, now gone, since new. They aren't NOS, but they're darn good condition!

One western handle to be had, and it's missing the rivet. It was part of the package as the helper handle for the one man, at great discount because it didn't fit. Maybe it never had one?

Anyway not yardsale price but I was happy to shell out $300 for the lot.

The 7-11 are both 8' but, slightly different as the years passed. Less ornate etching, a couple inches different length, different end teeth pattern. They've been swaged and filed, and used just a few times.

The one man 514 has almost a pristine handle and hardware, along with the western handle that's like new.

I don't think the rakers were ever swaged on the 514, although it looks like a file pointed it up sometime. There was dried wood on it, so it also got used at some point.

All in all, a nice set of Disston saws for my collection!

Let me know if you want to part with one of the 8-footers.

Saws seem to be a little hard to photograph. This one is 72”. All the teeth and rakers are present and seem in good shape.

The handles also appear matched (to one another, not to the saw necessarily). They might be marked. The hardware looks like you could quickly go horizontal on the handles with the bevels cut out on either side. There are bushings of sorts under the outside washers – don’t know if that was standard factory or user-done. Makes for a smooth tighten though.
