The items I choose to include in my kit were as follows:
Mini Mag lite- I wanted to use this mainly for frog hunting and gigging, but it came in handy for a piece of mind as well. I feel good with my decision to bring it.
Matches- In case I had trouble starting a fire with the fire rod.
Magnifying Glass- I saw this little guy at the dollar store in an eye glass repair kit and just wanted to try it out. With the consideration in mind that the same might be done with a bottle bottom or eyeglasses, or that this might be a nice little light weight plastic addition to my kit.
Magnesium fire rod- I found this in my local Wal-Mart bur it was attached to a much larger steel key chain holster device, so with some help from my Raccoon of a father he was able to prior the rod its self out of the device thus making it much smaller than my tube lighter. So the rod went and the light stayed.
Ultimately I was the most insecure about starting fires. If you read the I think this guy needs a Rat fire starter you will under stand why; so I over compensated by taking many methods. My next trip out with my new found experience I will not take so many.
Fishing line, 2 Hooks and 3 sinkers- I knew that there is the possibility to die within three day without drinking water so It would be a given that I might end up creating shelter near a fresh water source, thus making basic fishing supplies a vital addition to my kit.
Chicken Bullion crushed up, not cubed- This was more of a luxury item, I felt as though it was light enough and small enough to not truly take away to much vital space,
and would provide a nice source of nutritional vitality in a time of needed comfort.
Deet bug repellent- I figured that the bugs would be the biggest nuisance, so I assumed this would be a most in my kit, although I was unable to find bottles small enough to fit in my tin. So I bought some craft baggy and put a bit of the lotion in the baggy, due to the bag not being completely air tight it leaked so I wrapped it in duck tape.
Toothbrush- This is another questionable item, more for luxury than anything. I had just got a lot of work done of my teeth the week prior to this contest, so I did not want to ruin those dentists hard work.
Chewing Gum- This was just a small trick to help fight hunger, I adopted this means after fifteen weeks of contest dieting for a bodybuilding comp. during which you get very, very hungry. The act of chewing and swallowing tricks my brain into not sending as many hunger signals. It is also a nice relief and comfort out there.
2 Quart Bags- Their intended purpose was water collection and containment.
Potable water purification tablets- To kill any bacterial or viral uglys.
Hindsight, I would have left behind the DEET bug lotion, It did not do a damn thing to thwart the Mosquitoes. NOTHING!.
I would have also left the magnifying glass and the matches behind as well as the chicken bullion. The tooth brush would have also stayed behind, being that I could have easily made one out of a branch.
What I would have included in there instead of those would have been ether a small poncho( water collection and containment, shelter , water life traps etc..) and Para cord. You can never have too much of that, although I was able to make my own cordage with ease.
Now onto a frame by frame with the inserts from my field journal included within. Now prepare this was no run of the mill next few days. I saw some things I hope to never see again in my life
If you just follow along with the pictures it will make more sense.
I got my self dressed in average clothing for our current Michigan climate, which from what I hear is about like Texas, if you dont like the weather wait a few minutes and it will change to a different extreme. So as for it having dropped down into the 40s from what I heard I felt it was appropriate to include a wool lined hooded sweatshirt. I also wore a pair of nylon pants I got for 2bucks at Goodwill a few weeks back and a pair of Wal-Mart Thin-solate hunting boots, which I wear around normally anyways.
I gathered my Altoids tin and RAT RC-3 which Taurn sent to me through the mail to use for this contest and headed on my way.
I Started my three day two night stay at seven-thirty in the morn Friday and ended Sunday at seven-thirty at night.
My weight as of Friday morn was two hundred and fifteen pounds, my weight one hour upon exiting the woods was one hundred and ninety-five pounds.
I chose to do my stay in a large lot of forest my Parents own in Michigan; I thought it would be secluded and large enough to avoid any human contact, all the while offering me the safety of not breaking any laws in regards to state and local land/forestry laws.
I hiked in until I arrived at a know stream where an old abandoned train bridge stood, I did not use the bridge in any way, as I wanted to stay as close to the rules as I could.
I found a nice slanted piece of ground where I had a nicely Y developed tree which would work perfect for creating my debris shelter. I started by using my RC-3 to dig in the dirt tearing through any roots of and bumps in the ground while clearing the hut site of plants and limbs as well, I made sure to keep all these as I would use them later in the building process. I then gathered a nine foot fallen tree trunk and stacked it in the Y of the tree so it created a nice backbone, after which I stacked hard dried branches along the back bone to create a long triangular structure about four feet high and eight feet long. I then wove in green cut limbs which I used the RC-3 to cut by batoning my knife with a larger piece of hard wood as a club, it work amazingly just sliding right through the 3-4 inch popples. After all the popples were enter woven into the support structure I covered it with leaves and then forest floor, pine needles dry dead leaves and small branches. After the I cover it all with leaves and a layer of fern leaves in a snake skin configuration to allow and promote any rain to slick off on the ground, and with one large oak branch full of leaves my structure was completed.
I was starting to feel very hungry, as my body is programmed to eat every two hours and has been for the last 24weeks so I started to deviate from my next step which was fire and then water purification, so I went off and searched the woods for a bit until I ran upon some wild black raspberries. As I was eating them and searching for other items I realized that I had made an error that in a real life self-reliance situation of similar fashion could be the end of life mistake. This is what I mean by your end is in my opinion more likely to come from within self. See my brain desired consumption
It did not NEED it! And instead of following my priorities strictly I went off hunting down desires with night fall coming on fast. It is the rule of three generally speaking, 3 minutes without air can kill you, 3 hours exposed to the elements without proper shelter can kill you, 3days without water can kill you and 3 weeks without food can kill you!
So instead of keeping with the order I went off hunting down desires, with no regard to the fact I had no fire yet or water! So I returned to camp and promptly started working on my fire, it was the first time I have ever made a fire from spark and it took over two hours and half a fire rod later. Although I did pick up my matches a few times I could not bring myself to use them, I knew that in giving up I would not learn, I might also be in need of those at a later time. Which I was. So I continued on and over two hours later I succeeded in getting a fire started!!! Fire is a real moral booster, as I was walking around the area I found a captin morgan bottle with no lid and as I was looking in my the hole where I built my fire I found a faygo cap which fit perfectly, so I now I had a canteen. I put the morgan bottle on to boil, as it was boiling it cracked , so I salvaged the water and got a bag with purification tabs going. Then night fell and I was off to sleep, or so I thought!
I crawed in and bundled up with no problems, but then the humming began
.Mosquitoses!!!! billions of them all over me, and I mean covering my non floor side. I pulled my hood up and over, placed my hanky double folded as they can bite through single fabric.. I pulled the hoodie tight and with the hanky over my face. My hands where pulled up into my sleeves and shoved into my pockets. I could not sleep the ground felt so uncomfortable now where as it felt fine before, now I swear there were invisible rocks protruding up everywhere beneath me. The hum and noise of those mosquitoes were so great and irritating that I could not sleep, so I just lied there
uncomfortable and waiting for morning. I have never been in the woods a full night alone, in nothing more than a hut and clothing. I learned rather quickly that I am not a secure sleeper every noise in 360% were coming in on me. But as I lay there in silence I hear soft human voices al of a sudden. So I slowly move around to hear better, I cannot see but I hear to people walking on the bridge to the left of me. They sound in the thirtys, gruff and not kind. How they got all the way back to those railroad tracks in there condision I dont know It must have been two thirty in the morn. I hear the one say to the other I got this stuff hear but only three grams with me
..so then I hear snorting and hack up film a little later,
so I now understand that they are running some drug deal of coke up there. My heart begins to race, they are shining a small flash light in my direction and talking, I am listen to every word waiting for any word about my shelter and I would break a full pace for the woods. In my lifes experenice coke heads and dealers are not like pots head far different and far more unpredictable. Forchanetly they never take notice and finally leave. About an half an hour later a wild pig or large raccoon begans sqealing, right behind my shelter. I almost crapped my pants.
I recover my uncomfortable composure and then I see a bright flash and instantly I hear a crack the crack of tunder which had struck in my same woods. Instantly it began to down pore, my shelter survived and did leak but only in three small places. I finally fell asleep right at sunrise and slept for a total of 30min. from which I awoke to a still wet forest and fire pit, but it had stopped raining at least.
I forest around until I found some little dry bits under a fallen piece of tree bark, I also found some dryed out thistle as well. I tried to start the fire with fire steel but was unable to get it going so six matches later I had fire. I now needed water and traps set so I drank and while I chopped off the extra foot or so of paracord boot lace I had, from which I made figure four dead falls. I placed them near populated game/deer trails, I then returned to camp and started making cordage due to the fact I had only little para cord and would need to be able to make my own at some point regardless. I gathered long grass and placed it in the river weighted down and in place by a stone to soak over night so it would be more pliable in the morning. I felt dizzy and disoriented, and was not thinking right, when I thought about it I realized I had drank no water at all the previous day and had drank only a few sips that day (sat). so I walked over to my bag and drank it down awhile preparing a new bag with my sec quart bag, I decided to drink min of 2 quarts a day from here out.
Next I need a spear for fish and frogs so I set off to a swamp a large peat swamp where I knew there would be those long straight branchless trees, I found the right one and took it down by batoning my rc-3 through it with ease. I got it back to camp and carved the end into a point and placed it into the fire to harden. As that was harding I made a fishing stick and set it out to drift. I later came a crossed a mt dew can which I cut the top off to make cooking pot out of so I could boil some snails, musles to perfection. The snail tasted like river ass. The muscles were not bad and of this was very abundant.
I then took my spear out and split it first and then wedged two stick perpendicular of one another to fork out the spear. I also made cordage and a berch bark storage unit, I then set off to find cattails for food, you can eat the head the lower stem and the tuber(root) and the pollen. I was fed will that day.
Night was coming on fast so I got my mind right to make it through another in better fashion. So I needed sleep, but to sleep I needed comfort and security from the bugs so I start bundling fern in a hurry all the while over looking the posin ivy, I filled my shelter full of fern leaves and began stuffing the holes I then got in and filled my door hole full as well.
I slept sound a good five hours that night no problems. (SORRY MY PICS GOT OUT OF ORDER A BIT THERE)
I awoke Sunday to more convulsive shivering, I was so cold and shaking so hard it woke me up. I had to get a fire started so I went out and got my fire going and while I was warm up I decided to fish abit first cast in I catch a 7-8 inch fish and breakfast is severed I stayed awake for awhile but then fell back asleep but was awoke to talking, but this time it was directly behind my hut
.
It a mentally retarded women saying to a man , what , if some one , will
walk up on us , oot here? And a man replying with their aint goin be no one out this far
Then she said the ..last nime I do this he say It tickle so bad he cant control him self
I was like WTF!!!!!!
I jumped up and out of my fort and directly behind the shelter is a forty so year old man with his white ass in the breeze and a grey haired women on her knees in front of him
..
I say Im sorry to interrupt, but you need to take that some where else. The guy jerks up his pants and say where d you come from? I reply with you on my parent property and you need to leave. He says uh bay a I ok sor and they run off a crossed the bridge.
I found that the rest of the day I spent making fish hook s and a sowing needle from black locus thorns, while my boots and feet dried out, I had forgot how important it is to keep your feet dry which a real situation can spell disaster, but I was not to bad off. I also finished my frog gigger off with some black locus thorns and used pine resin pitch to fix the paracord in place.
I found a melt pop bottle that I also made into a water purification filter. Using my hanky a layer of silt then charcoal then gravel.
I spent the last two hours or so I think carving designs into my spear.
I learnt a great deal from this trip, it was a great time and character builder. I recommend every one so this. I am planning another already.
It got easier each day and I know now within this season I would have no problem staying out for weeks. Excluding unpredictable complications.
