Must have been your fishing stick I guess. Fatwood is a natural substance found in the woods. When a pine tree is cut down or dies of unnatural occurance the roots keep pumping pitch up into the stump. Over a long period of time this creates fatwood(hartwood, sapwood, pitchwood) makes for a very good tinder. It smells of pine pitch, and is somewhat sticky to the touch when first harvested.
Fatwood has kind of a purple color to it when it is very resinated. This is what I thought I saw in your picture. Not a question of sticking to the rules, just thought you might have harvested a nice peice.
Some pics for example:
Your pic
Pic of some fatwood I harvested a while back
This is a huge fatwood stump from which I harvested a good lot.
Here you can see the colors resemble the piece you are holding in the pic.
The piece you are holding looks to me to be fatwood. If so it is a good natural resource in your attempt to build fire. Fatwood will light after being totaly submerged in water, the pine resin helps to make it waterproof.
PS
I hope I didn't come across as accusing you of taking extra stuff. Just thought you had found a little jewel of the woods.
Take care.
