Crystal Meth and Wilderness Survival

unfortunately I live in one of the meth capitals of the world, the central valley of CA...have a few cop friends who tell me all about the raids they do on both meth and pot growers up in the hills...it's never fun to hear about a raid the weekend after you were camping in that location! P.S.- I agree, tweakers DO suck!

LOL! I can just see HD walking into Costco in his tye-dyed tee shirt looking for a pallet of cold medicine. . . "Honest, officer! I wanted it for a WSS project!"

I have gotten some seriously weird looks recently when I've gone looking for Potassium Nitrate and other components for my smoke bomb and mini-flare projects.

No I'm not talking about how to hike longer and harder:D

I'm talking about what pain the meth makers are for hikers.

So you know, we all love match boxes right?? So a while back I get a few and go to find some strike anywhere matches. No stores have them. I go form store to store in the nearest town and ask every grocery, every hardware store and they all say "no" and look at me like they never heard of them

So I go home and tell my wife about this and she said "Honey, don't you know the meth makers use them? I went to a workshop on it with the State Police and that is one of the things they use"

Great. So I have a beard, long hair and I've been going form store to store asking for strike anywhere matches:(

So I start researching what stuff they use. Well right off there's a picture of a bottle of HEET. :thumbdn::grumpy:

I used to buy quarts of "denatured alcohol" in the local hardware store. No wonder I can't find them anymore!!

So the only source is HEET at an auto parts store for my alcohol stove, and what will THEY think when I go in there in SUMMER and buy like 10 bottles of the fuel line antifreeze:eek:

I did pass by a hardware store about 30 miles from my town and found a quart of the alcohol, that will probably last me like 3 weekend trips but I guess this winter I need to stock up so I don't wind up on some list for buying it in the summer:rolleyes:

To make matters worse I've read in the paper of people busted for having the chemicals. So I have heet, some strike anywhere matches that a fellow forumite felt pity and sent me, acetone for dissolving epoxy on knife scales, heet and Coleman fuel. Scarey. Hoping the fact that I don't own any lab ware would help me plus I never use cold medicine. I have heard of people who got their houses searched just because they bought too much cold medicine which people have to sign for:eek:

Anyway thanks criminals for crimping my style (middle finger emoticon)

Rant off.

yeah that shit is bad up in the hills of NC, Va Tn WV and Tucky.. damn shame too.. hell you cant go for a nice walk down a lone dirt road in the mtns anymore without walking up on an abandoned trailor thats obviously used for drug making and or storing.. i love my mtns but it has a really dark side the folks that live around there. (not all and not most but they are there) what ever happened to down home good folks?

you might be making way too much of this.

I am more worried about running across a meth cooker in the National Forest while out hiking, than I am about what some clerk thinks of me when I buy HEET at the NAPA store. :)

Have you tried to buy iodine crystals for water purification lately? The war on drugs does not appear to be working well. It is becoming hard to find Polar Pure.

My dad and I recently had a little run where we were one-upping each other on how cheap we were finding strike anywhere matches. I think I won it by getting the big box for $1.19. Just had a meth bust near me recently. They bought too much Psuedoephedrine in one whack. Suckers.

Ha! Yeah that IS a concern but 2 trailers on my road have blown up in the past 2 years and 3 neighbors have gone to jail for it so I don't even have to GO to the National Forest. The one trailer very nearly set the woods on fire:eek:

I have a small stockpile of Strike-Anywhere matches I picked up a while back after the decline began. If it weren't illegal, I would share the love via mail. Keep looking, they're bound to be somewhere. This thread was irresistible for the title alone. Gave me a good chuckle!

Speaking of closer to home.

I mentioned Tucker in another thread.

In 2006 he showed up at my home looking like this:

biggirl.jpg

He had holes all over him. Looked like he'd been shot.

Well we contacted the animal shelter but started giving him antibiotics etc.

A few weeks later a lady showed up and got him with two guys. I got her email so I could keep up with how he was doing.

Then this showed up in the paper.

Investigators search for whoever wounded dog in Cabell County
April 26, 2006 12:24 PM
XXXXX W.Va.

Cabell County deputies are looking for the person or people responsible for shooting and stabbing a dog in the eastern part of the county. Deputies also believe a weedeater was used to hurt the dog.

The sheriff's department was notified of the incident yesterday, after the dog's owner was located by someone who found the wounded animal.

The Great Pyrenees named Tucker disappeared from his Culloden home Friday afternoon and found a couple of days later by another family that attempted to provide medical attention.

The animal was taken to the Tri-State Animal Clinic in Ceredo for treatment.

The dog's owner has also reportedly been the subject of intimidation and death threats during the past few months. The criminal report does not state how, or if, the dogs injuries are connected to those prior threats.

Turned out the owner was a witness against some of the amateur chemists and they burned her car and messed up old Tucker to get back at her.

The two guys with her at my house were the law and they paid for his vet tx.

When the relatives of the incarcerated ran her out we adopted him. He's a good dog:thumbup: Here he is now:

I remember trying to find small vials for storing iodine tabs in.. Tried everything from hardware dealers to pharmacy supply houses. No go :( The other thing I found disturbing was how no one could grasp the concept of the size bottle I was looking for. I tried giving dimensions and even found a model # to use. Still got the "Huh?" look. For one pharmacy I got the bugger look and then told the guy I wanted what looked like the crack vials from TV.........he replied "Oh those! We sell those guys little baggies nowadays. We no longer stock the little bottles." Could not believe they were actually responding to the needs of the dealers!!!! What a world! Before they made it a little harder to buy Pseudofed, we used to see illegal dumps in the woods where the pills had been opened. Kinda freaky to me to be walking around and see a crap load of boxes and pill containers tore open in the middle of nowhere.

Great looking dog, and good for you for taking him in and caring for him.

Considering the number of forumites who love the woods and are combat vets, the meth cookers might have reason to be worried as well. Seems to me that I could find a way to solve this problem fairly easily...

what the hell man! hearing about stuff like this just enrages me. Glad to see Tucker pulled thru!

+1!

You can hardly walk on a dirt road in the WMA near me without tripping over piles of stripped copper insulation lately.

I think if I found these vermin mistreating that dog like that, I would shove that weed whacker up their ass.

No. I lie. I'd just start shootin.

You know, they really are a bunch of asshats, but they didn't take these things from you.

Politicians and law enforcement keep "controlling" and banning things but it's so funny, really...the meth monkeys...they keep cooking the meth. How is that?

"Controlling" Sudafed, HEET, Blue Diamond Matches, Lithium Batteries and all of these other things is the same thing as gun control. Who does it hurt? It's not even putting a dent in the meth game.

Who was it that said "necessity" was the plea of every tyrant or something like that and all... :)
