Crystal Meth and Wilderness Survival

yep, well, i'm getting tired of being questioned by store managers and having to produce ID (which they record) when i buy acetone or methyl hydrate or similar in more than 2 liter quantities.
Thats store policy not law, in Canada acetone and methanol are classified as class 2 precursors, and stores are not required to ask you to produce ID for purchases of "normal" amounts.
I would have to check to see if there is a city bylaw.
The person that runs our Meth Watch program is on vacation until next week, let me know if you want to know the legal requirements

LOL - that's funny stuff right there. I have this visual in my head of the store owners sending the security tape to the police.

No I'm not talking about how to hike longer and harder:D

I'm talking about what pain the meth makers are for hikers.

So you know, we all love match boxes right?? So a while back I get a few and go to find some strike anywhere matches. No stores have them. I go form store to store in the nearest town and ask every grocery, every hardware store and they all say "no" and look at me like they never heard of them

So I go home and tell my wife about this and she said "Honey, don't you know the meth makers use them? I went to a workshop on it with the State Police and that is one of the things they use"

Great. So I have a beard, long hair and I've been going form store to store asking for strike anywhere matches:(

So I start researching what stuff they use. Well right off there's a picture of a bottle of HEET. :thumbdn::grumpy:

I used to buy quarts of "denatured alcohol" in the local hardware store. No wonder I can't find them anymore!!

So the only source is HEET at an auto parts store for my alcohol stove, and what will THEY think when I go in there in SUMMER and buy like 10 bottles of the fuel line antifreeze:eek:

I did pass by a hardware store about 30 miles from my town and found a quart of the alcohol, that will probably last me like 3 weekend trips but I guess this winter I need to stock up so I don't wind up on some list for buying it in the summer:rolleyes:

To make matters worse I've read in the paper of people busted for having the chemicals. So I have heet, some strike anywhere matches that a fellow forumite felt pity and sent me, acetone for dissolving epoxy on knife scales, heet and Coleman fuel. Scarey. Hoping the fact that I don't own any lab ware would help me plus I never use cold medicine. I have heard of people who got their houses searched just because they bought too much cold medicine which people have to sign for:eek:

Anyway thanks criminals for crimping my style (middle finger emoticon)

Rant off.
I think the drug laws are going to far when they start criminalizing honest law abiding citizens. It's gotten way out of hand no matter what the justification polititians or law enforcement makes. You want to take money and power away from drug lords, then make it drugs legal, the street price plummets, the drug lords can't make money to buy guns or hire thugs. Drug addiction is a medical problem not a legal one. For those of you reading this, just to be clear, I don't use or endorse using drugs. I am just opposed to the way the lawmakers and law enforcment are dealing with the problem. I know there are a lot of different views on this subject, as well as strong feelings. I'm not trying to step on anybodies toes, but when I have to worry about being put on a watch list or my home searched just for buying HEET for my soda can stove something has gone way wrong in the "Land of the Free".

Agree. The worst problem around here is actually addiction to prescription meds.

All of the supermarkets have the big boxes of kitchen matches whenever I look for them. I use them to start fires in the wood burning stove and in the grill. Never had a problem finding them.

Lowes and Home Depot both carry Acetone and you can get rubbing alcohol at most pharmacies and grocery stores.

I would not worry to much HD unless you go in looking for these items and long hair & beard is burnt off..... :D
But yes it has cramped all our styles to a degree

When I worked at Low es for a couple of years...long story....seems the judges look down on self employed fathers during custody battles....anyway. We had a list of things and if anyone had any three of those items in their possession at once in the store we were to notify the local authorities.

Also, it's not just meth, here I have have found trip wires for warning systems and punji pits around more that one marijuana field I stumbled into over the years. Another reason I prefer my tools not limited to "bushcraft", and why I often have a little friend with a big voice with me.

Let us dare to own Victor rat traps, shotgun shells and monofilament line. Bamboo...and fishing hooks...and other stuff too...where does it stop?

yep but are they the strike anywhere match, here we have the diamond brand match not as good............

I guess I better get a lifetime supply of REI matches before some methmonkey figures out a way to make crank out of them.

Speaking of closer to home.

I mentioned Tucker in another thread.

In 2006 he showed up at my home looking like this:

He had holes all over him. Looked like he'd been shot.

Well we contacted the animal shelter but started giving him antibiotics etc.

A few weeks later a lady showed up and got him with two guys. I got her email so I could keep up with how he was doing.

Then this showed up in the paper.

Turned out the owner was a witness against some of the amateur chemists and they burned her car and messed up old Tucker to get back at her.

The two guys with her at my house were the law and they paid for his vet tx.

When the relatives of the incarcerated ran her out we adopted him. He's a good dog:thumbup: Here he is now:

Big Dog will always grab my heart.

I knew the neighbor moved out, but was not aware that relatives of the mopes drove her out.

Sometimes, I just hate humans.

like I said, i wouldnt be joking about it. Cash register codes that need a manager to enter them, ID requirements, paperwork, all are restrictions to honest law abiding citizens who are buy stuff for NORMAL uses, not drug making.

yes, i can go to HOME DEPOT and buy acetone, methyl hydrate freely, but only in small quantities. I dont use small quantities and as a result i get raked over the coals for it. A liter of Methyl hydrate will last me about a day. I can go thru 4 liters of acetone in a week. All perfectly legal uses, fiberglassing, cleaning, alky stove testing and use, paint cleaning, etc etc etc etc etc.

same with matches. Yes i can buy them freely, but they (quality strike anywheres (redbird) matches) are getting harder and harder to find, and the amounts are restricted in some places. Thankfully i can buy 3 packs up the street, but no more than one pack per visist. So now i have to throw a pak into the cart everytime i go shopping, instead of stocking up once.

you think methyle hydrate, matches, acetone and other restricted substances are a pain to buy in my region, try buying bulk battery acid. You need a Repair Shop licence and must register with the rcmp. why - because battery acid is a major processing ingredient in meth making. Since the crackdown, there has been a spike in people on Craigslist putting up ads asking for dead car batteries, free pick up. Its one way they circumvent the restrictions on buying battery acid.

Maybe I am wearing a tinfoil hat, but all these restrictions on lawbiding citizens makes me wonder about what are our government is up to, and what will be restricted in the future, fuel, food, travel, tools etc.... control of the people. All for our own good of course.
