How versitile is our dear little peanut....
In browsing the web, at one site they have over 100 different styles of Case brand alone. From $20 to $140.
I defy another traditional pattern to match that.

But only 3 come in CV. Dark Red and Chestnut bone, and Yellow Synthetic.

I think it's all about hype and perception. Most people believe bigger is always better and don't really think about what they are doing. Knives, guns, cars, motorcycles. Most always bigger than really needed. Heck, I used to wonder at my dad's devotion to his little peanut and .22 Colt Woodsman until I finally grew up and thought for myself instead of believing what the gun magazines, and motorcycle magazines, and knife magazines were shoveling out.

I'll never forget how when I rode down the length of the Blue Ridge parkway on my Vespa 150, people would look at the maryland tag on it and ask how I got it down there. I think most of them refused to believe that I really rode it down instead of carrying it on the back of some Recreation vehicle. The speed limit on the parkway is 45 MPH and well within the range of the Vespa motor scooter. But the Harley guys just couldn't wrap their head around some guy doing the parkway on a motor scooter.

I was in a Home Depot one time to buy some heavy nylon rope for boat mooring. I had reeled off how much Ineeded, and the young guy working the department said he'd go get something to cut it with. I took out my peanut and he said 'that lithe thing isn't gonna cut that rope,' and the 'nut went through in one swipe. He was amazed. To him, it just looked too small.

It's all about perception and hype. To us, the Cult members, we're just believers. :D

We're the samurai of the pocket knife world :D

Alright, the 'nut is in! I forced a patina on it right away so I could throw it in my watch pocket right next to my old zippo. I tend to perspire a lot and have killed a few carbon blades before, so I'm hoping this will stave that.

So how does this work now? I have to carry JUST this for the next week? That seems tougher than I first thought! How did it work out for you guys?

Okay, so now, starting tomorrow, no other pocket knife. Just the peanut. It's the acid test to see if the Little Legume is a fit for your lifestyle. Also, you need decompress from the "other" knives you've got used to using. It's kind of like learning a foreign language by total immersion. Part of joining The Cult is unlearning all those bad habits picked up using those oversize "other" knives. It's a test of your faith!

Habiru.... That's a pretty Chestnut ! Lots of red. How could you not carry it ?

I agree. It is splendid. That in the pocket and a nice over/under over the shoulder and a guy is all set. don't forget the pup!

Oh I'm carrying it alright! I'm just saying that it might be difficult for me to JUST carry this. I feel so under-knifed!!!

Now you're talking. Don't think any guns and I are going to see woods time together for a while yet though (but I can certainly dream about it!!)

Are there any exceptions? I'm going to get my christmas tree tomorrow and may need to do a little limbing (though I could use my axe for it), and I always use a fixed blade in the evenings to make kindling out of some of my firewood before lighting the wood stove for the night

Oh sure, use a fixed blade for the heavy stuff, and maybe a saw for pruning the tree. But for all pocket knife stuff, only the peanut. You'll be fine.

Using the right tool for the job is perfectly acceptable and just makes sense. That Chestnut Peanut is one of the nicest I've ever seen, I must say.

I think you'll find that the Peanut will perform 95% of the tasks the average person needs a pocket knife for.

Gotta be mindful of that test week though... If your not you can get to the end of it and find that a whole year has gone by! ;)

Do any of you have a picture of the peanut next to the swayback jack? I'm really itching for a peanut in CV and yellow covers, but the swayback jack has about as small a blade as I'm willing to carry. The peanut is certainly shorter closed, but the specs suggest the main blades are roughly the same length.

I don't have a SB Jack, but I have a SB Gent. (My wife's EDC). Same frame as the SW Jack.

Now ya tell me!!!

I tried out my dad's old peanut after he passed away, out of sentiment. Then I tried an experiment with it. Next thing I know, thirty years have gone by and I find myself Grand High Muckba of The Cult!

Sneaky little buggers!

I only made it 3 years on Just a peanut, but overall I'm only 2/3 of the way behind ya; coming up this summer, I think I hit a decade with them! :)

The original was a Schrade Old Timer, from before they called them Old Timers. I bought it in a train station, from a vending machine. I was seven years old. I sharpened it to a toothpick, and replaced it.

I’ve had many since then. My current carry is a Henkel’s with stag covers. Bought when Henkel’s still made pocket knives.

Sorry. Dinosaurs can’t send pictures.

P-DAY +1

Went christmas tree hunting today. I had my favorite Fixed blade on me as well (A custom EK&T), but it spent most of the day in the sheath. A little pruning was all. My axe for limbing the trunk for the stand, and a bow saw for the cuttin'.

That 'nut though. It must have come out of my pocket at least a dozen times today. By the end of the day, I just reached for it and took care of things without thinking about it. Cut up a pear, cut off the net from the tree, a few tags from clothes and ornaments, and various other tasks. I even found myself honing it on the bottom of a coffee cup this evening. It's the weirdest thing. With some of my other knives I actually worry about pulling them out to do things. I'll look around for another knife that I might use. This one, just slide it out, take care of it, and put it away. All in one beat. I've even started thinking about what else I have that might be too much for what I need. I'm still not sure if the peanut is going to be it for me, but the thought of a SwayBack Jack is definitely up there. To be continued in P-DAY +2 report.

Just pulled the damper on the wood stove for the night, time to hit the hay. Hope everyone is having a great holiday weekend!
