Curious: Is anyone else allowed to carry a knife at school.

Why am I looking up a thread about knives and concealed carry in HS?! Oh yeah because Dave's in my BF buddy group and my message center brought me in here. Otherwise, I was done with HS in 1981 FFS!!!

Man tell me about it. That was one place I got out of and never looked back. Although with my boy I was still in the principal's office a-plenty!!!

I grew up in the macguyver era. All of us carried SAK's. In fact, I still have the very one I used in the Boy Scouts. No one cared. Well, peer pressure made sure we all got real victorinoxs or wengers - even then there were Chinese pretends. And these were frowned upon. Just relating an anecdote. Didn't grow up in the states. This is an anecdote not advice.

The way Aaron explained it is exactly how it is written at the high school in our rural Idaho town. You can pack a knife, but it must be smaller than YOUR handbreadth. I've had two kids go through this school system so I made sure to know. I doubt that's a typical rule most places, but that's the way it is here.

If you read it, I won't dispute it being there, but it is a poorly worded rule. As others have said who's hand - Shaq's, the teachers, the students(and the bigger you are the more knife you get to carry). It's a very vague rule IMO. It's much more uniform to say 3", 3 1/2" and so forth, but again that is just my opinion and hope all will be sure of the exact rules that apply. Some areas take this super seriously. My self-60's& 70's student and carried every day. One of my 1st knives was a prize from the school. Times have changed.

I've already checked where I live it's misdemeanor.... don't worry they won't find it with a metal detector... like never.... ever... ever find it unless I want them to.....

I know you said is it worth it? I have defensive blade training and if a need arises such that it's either defend myself or die I'd much rather be able to have a useful tool at my disgression...

All you need to do is turn on the news seems like a terrist attack everyday

just trust me they won't find it... like never find it...

A sharp mind and keeping your wits about you are much better self defense tools than a sharp knife.

I suppose I shouldn't have mentioned a specific year because it explicitly gave away my own caducity. Further, I am sure that many of the esteemed cast and characters on this thread were not even born back then ;)

My high school in NJ 10 years ago we could carry multi tools which included knives. My college didn't have any rules about carrying knives.

...in college his room mate turned him in...

Too bad your son had an a**hole for a room mate.

Penn State '82 to '87. I lived in the dorms and had an Italian stiletto in my desk the whole time. Everybody knew it, nobody cared. Our RA, an ex Marine, had a Balisong proudly displayed in his room. Both of these blades, and probably many more, were on our dorm floor at all times and no one got hurt and the world didn't end. It was cool.

...turned him in...

Sad state of affairs any more.

When I was in junior high and high school in the 70's, practically every boy carried a small pocketknife, usually a stockman or SAK, and we never had any trouble. Nowadays being caught with that would probably result in a SWAT team and arrest.

Ya it's poorly worded, to put it mildly. I told my boy he must have it wrong the first time I heard it, and had never heard of anywhere else allowing it with that verbiage until the OP posted. My girl just walked in and I asked her about it since it hasn't come up since my boy graduated three years ago. She said the written handbook now prohibits knives, but that no one bothers you if the blade is still shorter than the width of your palm. I'd advise the young folks to go strictly by the written rule of their school on this, and only wanted to make a post in the thread to back up the OP that this is a real thing in some places.

I am but then I am a teacher. I am a Agriculture Mechanics teacher to be specific. I carry every day without exception. My students are mostly farm boys in a rural high school. If I see a knife, I will take it and give it back to them after school as long as they did not do something stupid with it or make it obvious in front of a bunch of other students that I noticed it. I had a kid pull a knife out to show someone in the middle of class one time and I took it. It got back to admin a period or two later and they swooped in and chewed me out for not calling them right away... bla bla bla. Kid got suspended for 5 days and recommended for expulsion. I spoke on his behalf to the board and he did not get expelled. I see it as a tool and it is a tool for most of my students.

Remember in the early 2000s in the major metros, schools began implementing the fence perimeters, metal detectors, and security guards to ensure the good welfare of the children? Or was that just California? A culture of violence?

Ha ha ha. Ah, silly Americans.

Why take a chance of having a problem? Leave the knife at home during the day.
Just some fatherly advice!

I agree with grades 1 through 12 these days. Questions never seemed to come up when I was in school unless there was an incident.
With college, the "kids" are adults and I personally don't care what the rules are on campus in regards to reasonable knife carry. I always carried a knife. Always. It cut stuff when I needed to cut stuff.

I appreciated you posting-learned something. In the future I will have to word my original post differently.
Never too old to learn

I live in Spain but I went to the US when I was 16 (I am 34 now) as an exchange student. I lived in Fountain City, Winsconsin and attended the high school there. I had been using knives for a long time and I had my share of SAKs. When I went to the US I brought one Victorinox along. I put it in my school backpak and never needed it. Later I was told that it was forbidden. Never had to use it and never got in trouble, so its all good.

No worries Peter. Although I've seen you around the forum, I think this is the first time we've interacted. Cheers sir.

I am currently going to college, but of course we aren't able to carry knives on campus. People, including me, do it anyway. Being a knife nut, I am always on the look out for pocket clips to see who carries. when I see one I try and guess what it is just by the clip. I unclip mine for total stealth tactical operated status:D.
