Custom Dyed GEC’s by Nathan & Travis

Here is another 91 BF knife that we worked on which belongs to Jeff Mitchell Jeff Mitchell . It was a very nice example, but Jeff was wanting the knife to look like the Antique Yellow Jigged bone 85 shown below. Here is the fresh from the factory picture.

These two pictures aren’t the finished job. I’ll let Jeff post those when he receives the knife. In these two pictures, the color is starting to look right. Nathan still wanted to add more color and then buff the knife with the polishing wheel.

The 2018 Eldeberry Camel Bone 77 Barlows were controversial because these were supposed to be the color shown in this picture.

However, they all came out and were delivered in a pink color. The knife we dyed is on the left. On the right side is an original pink knife. We were trying to match the color in the original GEC picture.

I got my BF 91 back from Travis and Nathan a couple days ago, and I’m very happy with the result. It’s a completely different knife! Thanks guys!

Excellent. We are glad you like it. Some of these 91s were slow to absorb the dye. I think the reason that so many of these knives came out so light in color from the factory is that this batch of bone was just really resistant to absorbing dye.

High percentage of this year's Forum Knives are opting for a re-spray ;) Looking a lot better for it too, those Greens...😍

QUESTION: Is Micarta more difficult to dye successfully than Bone? Will it be left with a matte finish or can it be polished with its new colour?

Thanks, Will

I had a knife with dyed burl handles that would always leave a bit of color on my hands after I used it. Granted that was wood, and you are dying bone. But I was curious if any of the color comes off on your palms after extended use?

Hot dang, that is a fantastic color. Looks awesome.

I'd call that Cabernet. Little dark for Merlot. 😁

Another BF 91 dyed by Nathan. Sorry I don’t have a “before” picture. However, before it looked like many of the 91 Stockman’s with a more washed out looking dye job. On this one, he did not submerge the knife in the dye. He added it from the top only. (That is my nephew in the background. He loves to go to McDonald’s when I visit.)

That’s a nice subtle change, while still being a big improvement over the factory dye job.

I just got my #91 BF knife back today, Travis and Nathan, you guys are definitely masters at your craft! Simply beautiful and just what I wanted.

This one was nice to work on. Since it already had a patina on all the blades, there was less to worry about and we didn’t have to check constantly to make sure that there was no potential black spots starting on the satin finished blades. That is what is tough with brand new knives, we try not to take away the brand newness of them.

Let’s see the “before” picture. I so agree with you that this one really needed a change.
