Cutlery Proposals for the Bladeforums 2015 Knife

I understand the disappointment over the inaction from Case but roasting them over it won't help anyone. I'm sure they had their reasons, and they're quite likely listed above. Maybe next year.

Thank you all for expressing your gratitude!!
It is getting easier, and I always like seeing projects come to fruition, but knowing you are all behind me, makes it much sweeter!!

I think we are getting to the 2-knife choice stage pretty soon!

I will work on finalizing the details with the cutleries this week, and get some pricing to boot!

Thank you Charlie

I’ve been reading this thread since its inception and see there is certainly a strong sense of community here with varied opinions and ideas. So therefore it seems inevitable that whichever choice, GEC or CS as the choices appears, will ultimately be the best pick for the members.

How does the product ordering process work once all the preliminary nuts and bolts have been taken care of? I would like to gift my son one since he is now interested in the knife world, so I don’t want to be excluded or asleep when the time is at hand.

And thank you to the hands-on people and those who have bantered back and forth to make this happen.

There will be a sticky thread with ordering info. Before that you'll see the "final two" (or 3 or 4) that we'll actually be voting on in a poll.

Whatever the final knife ends up being I will for sure be in for one. I sure do appreciate all the effort that's going into making this happen.

I'm good to go as it is, with the current CSC offering as this model is great so far! For those wishing for micarta due to durability issues- are your fears founded in experience or conjecture? I have and use many bearhead or shadow knives in ivory, wood, MOP, that exhibit no adverse effects, such as these:

My personal carry clipped folder is also shadow scales of untreated Amboyna Burl, that has had much pocket time but no damage from falls, use, incidental contact.

I say let's let the Bocote be used as proposed, gives us a unique look in a material that hasn't been used yet in a forum knife (and remember that the micarta forum knife sold poorly I believe), and trust that Eric- a manufacturers representative, would know and choose an appropriate wood scale material for the project at hand. I trust in his expertise, and my experience using wood and collecting other used knives to easily buy the knife as a wood scaled shadow pattern. I feel it is a great choice of blades, size (a 4" folder that I can carry in scrubs- it's nice carrying a 4" slim folder for those who haven't tried it yet!), unique handle material and possibly stsinless for the first time- I'm curious to try CS's ATS-34 equivalent- it's time the forum knife had a good high quality stainless I feel.

I will say that I will buy either knife as a forum knife, the first time I've ever said that, but the GEC offering seems too pedestrian in the bells and whistles category, plus jogged bone and square bolsters set it firmly in second place for me.

Thanks to Charlie and all company representatives for this. The original dream thread was started on my birthday last October, it's been a fun ride and I was glad to see my PunchNut/Magnum Gunstock Punch idea was so well recieved, I hope it is well recieved again when I propose it next year!! 😝😝 I still want a small Wharncliffe punch knife!!

Have a great day everybody!!

I found an old folder that I've had for over 20 years, and it's in great physical shape. It's a bare-headed lock-back that was made with quince burl. It's looking mighty nice, as well.

I'm now convinced that the CSC knife will provide years of reliable service, and look good doing it. My vote is in.

I think if there is wood on the CSC, then a wood with a smaller grain than bocote might be good.

For myself, I would prefer micarta over wood, but just because I think it would look nice. My favorite knife is actually a modern folder with wooden scales, essentially a wood shadow pattern with a clip, and I carry that thing every day. It looks great. I'm not concerned about the durability of wood, I just think there is something cool about the look of a micarta shadow pattern on a traditional knife.

The idea of white or black paper micarta bolsters with some other material for the scales is pretty intriguing to me. Or else what about some of that black and white ebony. Best of both worlds and would make each knife unique in the same way that the variation in stag made each 2014 BF knife unique.

I like the idea of different colored micarta 'bolsters', but Eric already said a couple pages back that if he had to do a 100 of those, he'd rather run outside and do a swan dive off the nearest bridge!

Haven't seen that black and white ebony... it looks nice. I wouldn't mind snakewood or even bocote for that matter.

Haha yeah I bet it'd be a pain alright. It's one thing to do it on a custom but to produce 300 is another matter. Well I'm happy with a wood shadow though for some reason I think a less common less brown wood would be something special. That's why I put forth that black and white ebony as an idea. Another interesting wood is juniper. It's pretty burly and gives off a distinctive peppery scent which would add to the appeal. I'm also not opposed to white linen micarta like the panama linen Canal Street has used on their English barlows. It's a tough material and for a synthetic it actually ages nicely. I'm not a huge fan of stainless though I've warmed to it a bit lately. A nicely flat ground D2 would be very welcome.

I like the knife as redesigned by Eric. I prefer wood or bone over micarta by far. I like the bocote but that black and white ebony sure looks intriguing.

that black and white ebony looks cool. I would like to see the micarta prototype made by Eric - even though it would be impossible to make a few hundred of them, the image would probably boost votes. :) In any case, it will probably come down to Charlie negotiating some realistic but cool handle options and other variations for both candidate knives.

I´ve just read through the whole thread.

To me: GEC´s offering isn´t that great, at least in my eyes. I don´t want to offend but their proposal does seem just to put an example without taking in the ideas of what we wanted this year. Somehow "unready". CSC is making a wonderful offer in the shadow pattern. I like everything about that one. Would be great for back pocket carry ;) I like to have a straight edged secondary blade on my knives. As I mentioned in the other thread, I would buy that one within a heartbeat.

About CASE´s behaviour - it is a shame in my eyes not even to write an email or do a phonecall. I would not be into asking them for further knives of that kind.

Whatever is chosen for this year - I will buy one. Be it CSC (that I would prefer) or the GEC offering. At least to support the tradition on the Forum Knife per se.

About the idea of getting different materials (micarta wood or whatever) - please keep in mind that we want a knife below the 100 $ prize range. I doubt that this would be realistic as it will need more workmanship and more handsteps to get the final product.

A last word to Charlie: Thanks for making it possible once more. What a great guy you are to do all that for the community. As Frank mentioned earlier - a well earned place on the Hero´s List.

If I remember the past years; when it is chosen the handle material and steel and all the details are cleared in a poll and is another topic.

I would like to see the CSC offering in micarta, any color but black. Wood is my second choice, but ebony. Seems like every knife made is done in ebony. I would like something with more pop. Snakewood, Maple Eye Burl, Purple Heart or even other burl woods. This knife should stand out from others, not look the same. Ebony is just too much of a common wood to choose.
