CW Tip Failure!

I do believe I know what caused the tip to break.......

Wow. I read this thread as a complete outsider to any of these companies (never dealt with any of them in any way shape or fashion) but the whole thing has left me with a great impression of the company. As someone said earlier, thousands of blades and one fail, sounds like they produce knives of amazing quality and when one breaks they offered to replace it, no questions. Just my view but paying shipping for a new knife sounds like an excellent deal. But if the OP has a different view then i can respect that.

The process of detecting cracks in metals is called Magnafluxing. A UV dye with magnetic particles is put on the surface of the item and a magnetic source is put underneath it. The fine particles will be pulled into the crack and show up under UV light.

Sometimes.........you get a customer..............that you want to pay shipping to get the knife back.........then refund his money for what the knife cost.......then supply the contact info of a competitor.....

Sometimes, anyway..........

.

Tried to take some close-up shots today. Took heaps but this one was the only one worth(clear shot) a peek. I hope this angle tells a story. Let me know if you want more Eric. I will do my best to capture the different angles.

I didn't ask for this one so there's no need to waste your time on more. We can't do much more other than speculate until the knife get's back to the shop.

I do wish you'd just respond to my email and then send the knife back.

I did respond, but maybe I missed that one. There were a few.
Can you please send me that email again

I just received an email from Eric. He has been very helpful!

But for reasons I do not want to go into. I think I will just keep my CW at this stage. Lets face it, it's still a great batoner

It's funny you know, some things are just not worth mentioning. This is a prime example of that thing. Onwards & upwards

Going to eventually regrind her. Should turn out with plenty of belly & a tip that could pry a prison door

Its still a useful knife if you decided not to ship it back for a replacement.

That's it mate. We have a workshop, so this job will be pretty easy I dare say. Some cutting oil, well watered down, take it very easy so it doesn't heat up. And I should have myself something a little different & special. Then I will do another tip test . If it snaps this time around. Either two things. The HT on this particular knife is funky or I'm just heavy handed

I responded to all of the emails you sent me. I responded quickly on all of them. In case you didn't get the last one I resent it just minutes ago.

Also, I read your post over on Scrapyard about regrinding the knife. If you do that it will void the warranty, we need the knife back as is to determine what caused this. If you choose not to send it back that is up to you, however, if you want to resolve this I have given you all the info you need to do so.

Maybe you are not getting my emails so I would be more than happy to post the info here if you want me to. Just let me know.

Eric

So let me get this straight.

338 Stalker posts about the problem here before he contacts Swamp Rat.

338 Stalker gets all bent out of shape about shipping before he even hears from SR.

338 Stalker practically threatens to spread negative info about his SR blade if SR doesn't pay shipping BEFORE he even hears from SR.

Eric offers to replace the knife.

After all the drama and back-and-forth in this thread, 338 Stalker decides to keep the knife and rather than emailing Eric with this decision OR posting that fact here, he goes to another forum and posts this info.

That about cover it?

Maybe he is getting his list of demands in order? Seems like an odd sort of extortion the way he talked early on.. Just my take.

Let me get this straight. You personally are just a bystander, not involved in the tip breaking or Swamp Rat dealing with replacing the knife.

You cross-post from another website's forum here. (Does the administrator of that forum know you're cross-forum posting?)

You express no opinion of your own on what's going on, which is the purpose of this forum.

Post-and-run? Doesn't look good to me. Anyone here interested in another website's discussion will know how to go there to participate. We are not an internet clearinghouse.

Don't do it again.

YES. To get some info regarding shipping back & forth.

338 Stalker gets all bent out of shape about shipping before he even hears from SR.
NO, I just said I would not send it in if this were the case. As the knife still functions fine. Plus things are becoming tight$ my way! I've bought too many knives :p

338 Stalker practically threatens to spread negative info about his SR blade if SR doesn't pay shipping BEFORE he even hears from SR.
NO. I just should of worded(see below) that better, I'll be the first to admit that. I have explained myself here before. I hope you all understand what I was trying to get at. If not it doesn't matter now!

Eric offers to replace the knife.
YES. With conditions I cannot go into. It was fare after thinking about it some. Not perfect for me, as I will be out of pocket$ if I don't get an replacement CW, & instead I get the retail value. I bought it after market. But the way the Aus dollar is going(60cents ATM), it'll be real close now. But very fare from a warranty stand point.

No, not actually. We did not finish discussing ALL the finer details. But saying that I did say I would just keep it for now, & think about it some.

That about cover it?
I hope so. I've sent two emails to Eric in the last three hours. We can now move on :)

Again, I think for the second or third time. I said I should of rephrased this message better.
"That's your opinion & I respect that. But this knife will NOT be sent back at my expense, from Australia.
I'm a member of allot of forums, & as I post allot of tests here & there. It is in SR's best interest to pay all costs & replace the knife in question. Or it will look odd when folks see a Swamp Rat with it's tip snapped off in some of my outings. You see my point"

If I could go back I would. But I cannot. So I did NOT mean it this way! For those of you that know I post here & there, I dare say they would understand what I'm TRYING to get at. But I will be the first to admit. I worded this wrong. Are we cool?

Swamp Rat should make people take a test before the are allowed to purchase a knife. This thread just kills me :foot:

Bladeforums should make people take a test before they're allowed to select a user name.

Eric

regrinding a knife or modding it voids the warranty I understand, but how about reprofiling or convexing the edge?

As I understand it, it does if the modification causes a failure and/or ruins the heat treat. But I could be wrong.

Reprofiling and convexing is fine as long as it is done without without ruining the Heat Treat (pretty much just what Rat Fink said ;) )

Complete modification (regrinding) of the knife brings in to many factors for us to cover the work.

In short we cover our knife, our work, we can't cover someone else's.
