Butch do you have any blue, grey, tan linen mica? or grey tan or black g10?
Those are the colours I like :D or some iron wood.

I'll order some if you don't

I believe the thumb checkering in your schematics will hurt your hand during stabbing. The point of a taper or guard is often to protect your hand from the blade because you'll slip. The only way to avoid tearing your hand up on that would be to reinforce your stabs with the palm which limits how you can use the knife.

huh... I was going to skip the quillion.

After reading about the design of the EK is a guard/quillion necessary?

I don't believe a full guard is necessary, but if you plan on stabbing with any grip other than palm reinforced, some safety in design would be nice to have. A ramp just a little more dramatic than your serration design would probably be enough, in my opinion, but with the checkering on there you're almost guaranteed a torn up hand.

I was hoping to no ramping of the metal is there a handle grip design/pattern that will suffice?

I do see your point AcridSaint and thank you for you concern :) If my mommy was still around she'd care too

If the handle is mortised, it's a hidden tang or a coffin handle then all of your contour could be put into the handle. If it's full tang your contour will have to be in the blade blank or you'll need a guard. Maybe the hourglass shape in the EK knives is enough along with the gripping surface, I couldn't say for sure.

At the least I think you'll want some of that hourglass or other contouring done if you plan to stab. Since you added the ramp for the checkering in some of your last drawings, I think you could just stick with that shape to help protect your hand.

There are plenty of daggers out there that don't have these protections and they are fine knives. I don't want to drive you away from your design, just wanted to point out the possibility of a problem when stabbing.

Maybe I should get a nice small guard:confused:.... I need to read up on it....

Is there one that is easy to take apart?

heh I read up.... I really want to go with no swell and no guard but i want to be as safe as possible... is there some type of handle design/ material that can save my hand?

Butch, regarding the steel width U make a decision... I dont want a ice pick and i dont want a spatula, I want something that looks and fits will with the knifes length and thickness.... then cut it out and do something with the rest of the steel so i can not change my mind ;)

You can remove the rumps after if you change your mind, I think you will do the handle anyways. I guess everybody here agree I if this blade is designed to stab it needs a rump, quillion or a guard. I would be not comfortable that flat handle design with that dagger and could not use it with force because of the fear of slipping my hand to the blade. Also the look of the rumps are more good looking imo... stick with this design, you may remove rumps if you are sure it is safe enough...

good plan! cut that one galadduin posted.

Butch cut out the profile and post some pics don't make any grooves though and I'll see it I like it. thanks galadduin

alternatively Make some nice scallped grips and im happy with that.... ( I'm really not liking the quillion )

hold the knife in an inverted grip during combat using your thumb to prevent your hand from sliding up the blade. IMO

You lose reach in reverse grip and are limiting your options if you can only stab in one grip. I want every option available to me if I have to fight for my life. If you want to reinforce a stab the palm is more stable and gives more power than trying to stabilize the knife with the thumb, imo.

maybe a bit of a palm swell? any pics of this?

There are not too many example of daggers out there....

actually that handle design is awesome I love the swell on it.... and I can skip the quillion!!! Thats it! im done finished I know what I want now :) thanks Keith.

that handle screams hold me haha..

My blank blade design with that handle swell will be perfect.
Nice straight blank and the coogler grooves in a swelled handle like the one that Keith posted ( no swell in the metal i think if there is no metal swell there will be a natural resting spot for for your hand..)

would it be possible to angle the swell as to make the blade perpendicular to your knuckles? I think that would be perfect.

perfect!

Take note Butch and chop out that blade!!

straight handle slight recurve in the blade
but spike round or pointy
and the holes for the tang can go 2 ways depending on how you want to finish the handle (pinned and epoxy or detachable screw type)

I say round
and detachable scales ( screw type )

And for blade width What did you figure is a good width?

(thank you Butch you started my week off well )
