Dangerous question

I'm trying to work out in my head what it is that makes a knife worth the money that some command, both new and "used." There are three that are particularly perplexing to me: Strider, Hinderer and Shirogorov. There just isn't anything about these that make it immediately apparent why they cost so much money. I have no doubt that they are well made and use fine materials, but the same can be said for many, many other knives that cost a great deal less.

This question isn't intended to generate a comparison of the above, or a flame war of any kind. I'm only interested in what these (as examples only) knives have that less expensive knives of similar quality do not.

Because they're not built cheap, they provide warranty work at no cost to you, they have to make money in order to stay in business. There are hidden costs that has to be absorbed with each knife that is produced.
People are willing to pay secondary market prices for a rare knife or want a particular knife in their possession.

...SO, you have to decide for yourself, and your income, tastes, and your ability to actually purchase one of these knives (especially in the case of Shirogorov) will play a very big role in what you decide is worth it or not.
Do your reseach, listen to as many opinions as possible, but do not let anyone tell you what is worth the money or not worth the money like their word is gospel. What is worth or not worth the money is ultimately for YOU to decide.

This last few lines left in the quote here pretty much sums it all up. And me? Just someone who got into collecting not too long but have always been carrying a knife most of my life.
Before even knowing the names of all the brands and looking at some of these exquisite ones.. a knife was always just a tool. Did my "research" for almost 2 years before deciding I wanted to go deeper into things edged. Have to say most of my knives these days are really a splurge in lifestyle although I do use a great number of them.

Having handled Hinderers, Sebenzas and yes many Shiro which basically are the core of what I have these days.. just haven't had a go at Striders. As a whole whatever I have handled are generally good knives. My pref of one over another? There's a long story of how it fascinated me when looking at the early day ones .. most where only a few pictures exist and not much descriptions to all the changes and improvements made. But the short of it is I just find the more normal ones have a very utilitarian blade shape and size that fits with what I normally do with a knife.

Yes, do not let anyone tell you what is worth your money... Research and finally deciding what one wants is really the key. After a couple of even higher priced custom which basically are pretty things to look at most time, I still gravitate back to my preference for Shiros and more production knives of other brands with different steels because I like to try out different aspects to use, mod, open them up to look at all the workings whenever the wallet can afford.

Strider SnG... The design. Brilliant.
Sebenza... The design and the pivot. Brilliant.
Spyderco Military... The design and that Hole. Brilliant.
Emerson... Ergos and the chisel edge. Practical.
