Danny Collection is here...

I store my knives in regular amazon left over cardboard boxes with silica packets in each box. The more expensive the knives, the more silica packets per box. Knives laid out in rows, on top of a single layer of towels. Nothing fancy. I handle them with white gloves (literally). Never had any issue with any knife in any steel.

I think the "you better be realistic about 5160 it rusts, so if Buck sends you a rusty knife then that is what you should have expected because it is 5160", are missing the point.

If the knife rust, after, you receive the knife. That is on you. If the knife rust while in Bucks care. That is on them.

New soap box. Had to use it.
Your knives are hidden in boxes, never carried or used, touched only with white gloved hands...how boring. Why own them? A knife is like a spouse, it should be enjoyed, cared for, displayed, touched and used for its puprpose.

Even so, if your blades are only 0.6% chromium, you better put some wax, oil or grease on them, in case a bead of sweat falls off your brow and lands on your 5160 blade. The Museum of American Military Edged Weapons in Intercourse PA uses Butchers bowling lane wax.

Sure Buck shouild have coated them with oil or better yet grease, Cosmoline. But then the collectors would complain about having to remove the grease and really complain when it solidifies with storage :)

Why not let people own things for whatever reason they want, and keep your weak comments to yourself? You attempting to dogpile because folks don't appreciate having received "pre-rusted" knives direct from the maker doesn't make any sense, sort of like your collector bashing...on a forum full of people who collect and own more knives than they'll ever be able to use, and who are free to enjoy their ownership as they see fit.

Thought this was a discussion board. He has as much a right to express his opinion as you do to disagree with it. Why not let people voice their opinions and keep your garbage comments to yourself?

Actually, he's attacking the other poster. Seems like you've been in the "other" area too long, and seem to think this is a fitting discussion to be having in a manufacturer's subforum.

I had noticed your own cryblubbering and name calling a few pages ago, but chose to ignore it at the time. Because yeah, how dare people want a knife to be in pristine condition right from the maker.

Seems like you and Brownbag could both stand to complain somewhere else, since you guys are the ones bringing the tone into this thread.

5160 rusts, it would be nice if they had oiled it better I agree, none of the rust I've seen has been more than superficial. You can polish it out if it bugs you or just wipe it down and move on. If you are actually going to carry and use the knife then who cares. If you are buying it as an investment(lol) or to flip, hoard, whatever, it's just a $125 knife be realistic on what $125 gets you these days. $125 is a bottle of whiskey and a few cigars for friends. Y'all aint paying custom prices quit busting Buck's balls and blowing this out of proportion. The "Hey this blade is rusty perhaps oil em a bit better next time" is fine and good. Mailing them back so they can polish it for you and mail it back is silly and if you think the new prices are high keep wasting money like that and they will just get worse. Or more likely they just wont do runs like this again.

Buck has been more than accommodating please don't make them regret doing small runs like this by being a bunch of Karens.

He said leaving knives in a box is boring, what a savage attack, someone better call the UN. Let Y Your Name Goes Here stand up for himself, you are the one picking fights.
Cryblubbering, that's quite the accusation coming from you. Noticed you edited your original comment, sounds different when someone else says it doesn't it?
Bringing down the tone according to who? We are pointing out that 5160 rusts, apparently that's been a bit of a revelation.

If you want to continue this discussion lets do it in the other place, you've derailed this thread enough.

Here's my rusty boy to get back on topic.

All I'm continuing to see here is your unsurprising inability to understand why others might be irritated that their new knife straight from the manufacturer came with rust already on it. Do you really think we don't know the properties of 5160? That was never the point anyone made, though you sure enjoyed trying to call people Karens* as though it were. If your new donut knife (LOL) had come with a pre-scratched blade (since coatings DO scratch after use, big shock) what would your reaction have been? Exactly. Get it now, or do you still need it explained like you're five?

I'm not interested in having a big argument (because you don't have a valid one), and won't be addressing this further. I have since cleaned the rust off of my new knife, and am enjoying it, although my confusion remains that Copper and Clad, who gets their Buck 110s from Buck was able to deliver a Buck 110 to me in 5160 that has never had a speck of rust on it even with use, whereas Buck themselves seemingly weren't capable of doing so, if several of the reports in this thread were any indication. Oh well,

All that said, I'll continue to enjoy and buy Buck knives, so it's a minor inconvenience. You have a great day.

* Which is amusing, considering you didn't have the pouch to call those who said something about it (like me) out directly.

I'll stand by what I said, which I only said to counterbalance the "5160 rusts" the moment it is created statements. 5160 rusting is not my experience with my non use / storage / handling.

Hopefully, my statement will help others thinking about buying 5160 by knowing that at least one person does not have a rusting / discoloration issue. Nor do I do anything special/difficult/time consuming to maintain my knives.

The only 5160 I had a slight issue with was a bought straight from Buck Ground Combat Knife. Slight discoloration spots on both sides of the blade. I polished them off after an hour or so.

It will always be my opinion a knife like that should not make it past quality control. And if a company is knowingly / purposely letting this happen, at the least, say so in the product information - "may have slight discoloration".

Just because a steel is prone to rust is not a valid reason to ship out rusted and discolored knives. It should be a reason for the seller to double check the product before it is shipped.

My guess is they were inspected, packed, and then rusted. Buck has and can do better, no doubt. If you are buying a high carbon steel and don't know how to take care of a little (not all cases I get it) surface rust then you've got some fun in store if you plan to carry and use the knife.

Quiet Quiet the loose blade would bother me more, one of mine is rock solid the other has a touch of wobble, nothing to be concerned about but it's not perfect. Would rather see a more affordable functional knife from Buck than an expensive aesthetically perfect one. To answer your previous question about the donut knife, a scratch in the finish wouldn't bother me. I play with my toys and they sometimes show it, makes em uniquely mine. Besides are you really going to make that knife look any worse, a scratch might improve it. 😂

So, firstly, I want to say that that was a low blow from me, because I think that MT is pretty awesome, NGL. It's got sprinkles! So, sorry 'bout that, and my tone on the rest of our exchange. Secondly, I can't disagree on the affordable user versus expensive aesthetically perfect one. It seems to me that Buck have really jumped on the train of collectibles versus users lately, but I'd be a hypocrite if I said I didn't like it just fine. I mean, a 110 in Magnacut? A Damasteel Vantage? I don't own that second one, but I won't lie and say I haven't thought about it.

Where I'm at it with this is that Buck is a tremendous company with a ton of heritage, and they slipped up a tad here with this Danny Peretti 110, but as has been suggested by you and a couple others, I cleaned up the rust spots with a bit of Flitz and an eraser, and it's a knife I'm glad to own. Lastly, I found that my slight bit of wobble went away when I flushed the knife, and gotta say, this Danny 110 was FIIIIIIIIILLLLLLTHY, but now she's moving smoothly, and given that Buck always puts screaming edges on their knives, it's made its way into my pocket a few days already!

No need for an apology, was some history there I blundered into.

The amount of smiles my donut knives have gotten really makes them something special. Even non knife people warm up and get a laugh. Buck should do a run of donut 110's, the Mango Bird 417 shows they got pretty good with cerakote, would hate to see that newfound skill go to waste.
