hi,
Im very disapointed bout the way Darrel treat his customers. Its allmost 1 year ago I recived my madd maxx 3". The finish of this knife was not so perfect as I presented it but still I luv it.
But after using it some few weeks problem go come and the framelock nomore hold the blade tight. After open it the blade jus shake in the frame. The problem was found fast.
Darrel fixed a ball in the framelock at the side to the blade to hold the blade and this ball went deeper inside the hole Darrel drills inside.
I realy shok fi see this happen an I contact Peter the man who order for me coz Im from germany an no waan get the stress with the costoms.
This man contact Darrel and Darrel say that he gonna repair the knife an he should return it back to him.
Everything was still wonderful. I return it to Peter and he return it to Darrel for repairing. This was in september 2010. Because of the long way oversee and the problems with the costoms he decided to let the knife is be finish sent to a friend of him in US first fi check if everything is well done.
Still all was cool, Darrel recived the knife an explain that he waan fix a new blade, that the ball he fixed inside the framelock is a new way he try at this kinife the first time and he will find a way to repair.
So the waiting start. I wait 1 month,2 month,3 month an I decided fi contact Peter to ask wa is all about. He contact Darrel an Darrel replay that he has to make a new batch of blades and handles but soon it will be ready. So the waiting continous.I wait an wait write back to Peter, he to Darrel like bout 4 times and everytime excuses from Darrel,
he sorry for long waiting an it will be done soon. I already wonder wa goin on there coz if I be Darrel I would try fast as I possible fi satisfy my customers but no action.
So last time I mail Peter in may 2011 and da same excuses again. Now was the time I come mad an angree an decided fi me still to give him a chance to august coz I luv this knife to much an wait 3 month mo till I waan tell Peter that is better he gives me the money back I paid to him for the knife. I know is not the fall of Peter, I nuh lie, he try very well well but wa he can do if Darrel dem fuck up ooooo.
I wait again and today I recived a mail from Peter that he will transfer me the money back coz Darrel cant fix the knife. Inclose the mail I recived the pics of the repaired knife which Darrel sent to the friend of Peter in US after having it almost 1 year. Its soooo poor coz it look a like, Darrel no works at the knife at all.
Im totaly disapointed, very sad to loose this knife. I cant impress my feelings bout the work of Darrel coz everywhere I read wa quality knives he built but wa I hold in my own hands I dont know I no see the quality an good work people talka bout. Darrels service I waan say I never see in my life before thats not the way someone supose to treat his customers.
I never ever will buy a knife from Darrel again as I still luv the design and in the maxx I found the perfect knife for me.
I hope my english is not to bad and u all understand how I fell bout it.If u klick on the link u can see the pics of the repaired knife so everybody can make his own picture about my storry.

In summary:
Customer had a knife by Darrell Ralph that broke. He sent it back to the maker via the store he purchased it from. Approximately 9 months later, he still has no knife. Either the maker is taking too long to fix it or it can't be fixed. After 9 months of chasing his tail, the buyer is going to get a refund from the seller since Mr. Ralph appears to be breathing, but is otherwise unresponsive.

Sir,
We will make this as simple as we can.
Your knife fell into a situation that we tried to improve the function of our knives and the process did not work out. First off we tried placing a hardened bearing into the frame lock of the knife lock face to make a better wear surface. The hardened ball (in theory) and in our tests should have made for a better lock. It didn’t.
This was simply a good idea that didn’t pan out.
When we heard that there was a problem, we had Peter (your dealer) return the knife. We were in a confused state after we recieved the knife however. The knife had a customs lock on the frame. This is a little wire that has a melted lead ingot seal placed on the wire placed through the lanyard holes of the knife. The customs folks in Germany put this non removeable cuff on an item that needs to be repaired so that they can tell if it is the same item that was sent out for repair. We were told not to remove it or the import taxes would be added when the knife was shipped back to him (Peter). We wanted to replace the frame and make the knife right. So we were in flux trying to figure out how to make this situation work for all involved. We try very hard to please as many people as possible with customer service. Since that time we have asked that the knife be returned. We told Peter that we would refund the purchase plus shipping and added and $100.00 extra in interest, to make this right. We are waiting for the knife to come to us. We will issue the refund the same day. Every day we try to make knives better. That is part of our goal. We have to take chances to have rewards for our customers.
Sincerly
Darrel Ralph Designs

Sounds like customs made it very hard if not imposable to do the repair.

Darrel, I have never heard anything bad about you and it sounds like you are trying to make this as fair as you can! I hope there are no hard feelings when this is over. $100 interest is more than any bank will pay! Good Luck! Kevin :D

Hi
Yes it was difficult. We even tried to come up with a way to remove the lock bar and find a way to add a new one. It is just not feasible.
We feel very bad about situations like this. We feel all customers are gold and try our best to ready the situation if we can. We are not the fastest some times but we do try to do the right thing.
The Dealer (Peter) is a great person and we hope only the best.
Tafari; We hope the best for you sir. We apologize for the confusing situation.
In retrospect, We were kind of felt like we were between a rock and a hard place.

Kevin,
Thanks for your support and great words.
We are not perfect. No company or knifemaker is perfect. You cannot please all the people all of the time. We just try to clean up every mess if we can.
The one thing that we do, is no matter how long it takes, we always make good in one way or another. (within reason)

It sounds to me like Darrel is trying to make it right. Nobody is perfect and there are VERY FEW places that will offer you $100 on a knife that just could not be repaired because of customs!! Kevin :D

I dont know how the seal was on the knife but I guess throu 1 hole of the 2 parts of the handle so u could remove this part put a new one and send all together withn a small writing that you have renew this part.
an why u dont tell Peter about this with the seal? I cant remember hearing once about this one
But thx for giving a statement about all

So why than he excuses all time that the parts not ready? It would be better to tell bout the customs problem

Darrel, he is all yours. I am out of this because I dont think $1,000,000 would make him happy. GOOD LUCK GUYS! Kevin

So why than he excuses all time that the parts not ready? It would be better to tell bout the customs problem

Once again
We were trying to figure out how to fix the knife without violating the seal that was through both handles in the lanyard. That was the problem and we have now addressed it by refunding your money.
We feel bad about the situation. It was simply a communication and customs problem that could not be overcome easily. We were trying different ideas that would fix the frame without removing the custom tag. That is what the parts not being ready was about.

Thanks for your understanding.

Sounds like Darrel's tried all he could do given the constraints of that German customs lock. It's a shame the knife couldn't be fixed.

Since I'm German: tafari, Darrel sagte das er dir alles Geld zurueck gibt plus wie viel es dir gekostet hat um das Messer nach Amerika zu schicken PLUS noch ein hundert USD mehr.

I just wrote him in German and said Darrel agreed to refund the cost of the knife + shipping + 100 bucks in interest since it couldn't be fixed.

I apricate and count it high for Darrel and my money I paid for the knife is already in proceed to transfer to me. but dis is not wa sadisfy me at all if u guys see the pics of the knife u can see that there is no good work at all an is jus a shame that a high name knifemaker cant repair it again nor to make a new one in almost one year to satisfy his customer. Sorry Darrel....
Let it be close now and put all in the hand of Jah he knows wa all about....Blesses
