David Beck W.S.K. vs. TOPs "TRACKER" round #1

I agree with Vermonster, my W.S.K. easily tackled the most delicate carving chores. In fact it's the best carving knife I own. Very comfortable to use.

The WSK is bush blade not a food prep knife. Any knife with a sharp edge can cut meat, veggies, ect. I have used it in the kitchen and it works fine, not my 10 inch chef knife but it will work.

The hole in the handle is for a lanyard.

I own a Beck WSK and the Companion Knife, I got them in a set and the Companion rides piggy back on the the same sheath, just like on Beck's Web Page. The point is the Companion can do the things like food prep and skin game. If you get the set you have all the bases covered.

I asked Dave the same question,
He answered by saying, you could, but I recommend against the practice of throwing any knife unless specifically designed for throwing.

Then he said, I would rather you throw your TOPS :D

Not very, it's made of O-1 tool steel, but with care it won't be a problem. Taking precautions like don't store it in the sheath, keep it clean, wipe fingerprints off before putting it away, etc. But the benefits of O-1 are a good trade off, it takes a fine edge, it's pretty easy to sharpen.

I keep mine wiped down with an oily rag, or sometime's I'll polish it with Reniassance Wax which will also help keep it from tarnishing. Renaissance Wax is great on the handle too.

But like Dave says, these are meant to be used and he feels the spots, patina and discoloration the knives get over time only add to the character of the knife. I agree.

Whats the cheapest you guys seen the Tom Brown Tracker for. I think I saw it online for 269.99 Anyone seen it cheaper then that?

GREAT thread! What about round 2? I am in the middle of ordering a WSK and would be intersted in peoples opinions now that they have gotten to use the knife for a little bit.

Thanks

I love mine. In fact I just took it out the other day and chopped down a 4" diameter tree with it. It chops like a small hatchet would. I was chopping pretty low to the ground, so I couldn't get too much leverage on the swings, but when I did hit it just right, good size chunks would fly. I wouldn't want to chop all day with it, but now I know how it feels to chop a little if I ever have to.

Now it's "broken in" and has some scratches on it, but it's meant to be used.

Could just one person please take a picture of their Beck on top of a "Where's Waldo" or "Curious George Goes Commando" book? I want to see what it'd look like at my house. :D

I was going to take a picture of my W.S.K. on top of one of my 2 year olds' "Wiggles" coloring books, but I didn't think anyone would want to see it!

Hey, Vermonster

What was the brand name of that beeswax you put on your WSK sheath?

I love the way it turned out.

Still waiting on my own WSK. :)

Later,

Thanks for posting up some more pics...

Is that the satin finish? Beck mentioned more than one finish.

Thanks.
