David Mirabile RONIN Battle Tanto WIP (PAGE 25 NEW CUTTING VIDEO)

PS

Do you see how the bottle kinda pushed down when you hit it

You slightly scalloped the cut ..... Cupped it

Work on the angles with the paper

Remember to not swing it like a baseball bat but to draw the blade through the target

When you cup a cut into a meatier target the medium will not be as forgiving and if the edge is not lined up the blade will twist exaggerating the scalloping

I just also subscribed to your You Tube Channel :)

With a truly difficult target, the sword will twist in your hand, you will wind up actually pushing down on the blade sideways with kinetic energy in at least two directions, and if you are not very, very lucky, will wind up with a corkscrew twist in your blade nigh on impossible to get out(ask me how I know this!)

Proper angle and extension for cutting is the easiest thing in the world to explain and one of the hardest things to do in practice consistently.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Thanks for the input Steven. Although there is zero chance of twisting one of my 3V blades, I can appreciate how proper technique effects cut quality.

I have zero training or experience in traditional cutting arts, or technique. I have lots to learn!
My tests are really just about edge geometry. If it's not right on these relatively thick/narrow blades, they aren't going to cut well at all.

I'd love to see some video of you cutting!

Tatami mats are fairly easy to cut ..... YouTube is full of people doing it

When I watch people cut I look for different things

James Williams comes to mind

He is a strong cutter

Toshishira Obata is another strong cutter

I don't like seeing over stylized cutting .... I prefer a more fluid approach

That is me thou

I have seen relatively dull swords cut thru tatami mats so there is a lot on the technique

Water bottles and pool noodles I won't even watch :)

I'm more into the draw cutting and multiple cut combinations with foot work added

Remember my base is kendo so katas were never really part of it

I respect it but it is not in my wheel house

The slingshot guy did it with a piece of unhardened steel.

I love that guy :)

Like I said they are not hard to cut ..... But either is flesh :)

What I like about them are that they show quality of cuts ... Angles, etc and they have a consistent media that I like

You scallop a cut or blow the angle you feel the blade torque

I like them as almost a speed bag etc

Here is an older video of cutting cans with a thin and very light little sword; it weight about 12 ounces. It was a light-hearted video response to someone a while back. At the time I fancied that the blade was a bit Japanese style in look. :)

This is my Condition Purple sword.

Plus, I don't want to miss a chance to make a disciplined cutter cringe! :D

Oh good. If they're not getting some grins from those who watch, and bringing delight, or jeers, then I'm doing it wrong, I say! :D

Not a real drop cut, but fun anyway. This was with a JP Kraiken.

I just learned there is a thing called a fruit Ninja :)

Seems like it's a video game that has gotten rather popular

That's not funny STeven

People .... A wood trainer and a tennis ball are your friend :)

What ever....... I'm gonna try this with my heavy, clunky viking sword from it's leather sheath........

I'll let you know how it goes.................

LOL! Nice slash. This entire thread is what you call a bad influence. :D Looks like the pears are ripening.

At my last job they frowned on me slashing fruit in mid air.
My new job is better.

Made myself a bokken from my vintage black Micarta. Time to start wacking some bean bags.

Man that thing is awesome

You should make me one buddy :)

Please becareful buddy when you start playing with live blades ..... You make a living with your hands :)

Yeah Joe, cut proof gloves for a while.

I am actually going to be working with Shinbudo weapons here in Oregon on bokken to match my Ronin Tanto and Wakizashi. They will be available to order direct from them. Should be awesome!
