Ill be putting in for a couple permits to hike Mt. Whitney this summer. Probably going to be in August during a weekday. Anyone up for it? Probably look at staying at least two nights in the area, one in Portal camp at least the night before and one the day after because will be to exhausted to drive home. Its a lottery so not sure if Ill get any. Start training soon if anyone is thinking about going.

I'm definitely up for it. The problem is I don't do high altitude stuff very often. How are you training?

I'm guessing you're doing the standard route? About 22mi RT and climbing about 6k'? That's an ambitious dayhike (for me, at current fitness level) at altitude, especially with only a day or so to acclimate. Man, I'm going to need to really train hard to compensate.

I just found this HD vid someone did of Yosemite.

Wow, thank you for that! That was just incredible. Beautiful. I'm going again next month, only for a couple of days though.

Yeah Im thinking after reading more stuff that another day in advance might be a good idea. My highest hiking has only been in the 10,000ft range.

Yeah, the highest I've done so far is 9.5k. Another day in advance sounds like a good idea. I'm very interested, will have to chat with you more about it the next time we meet up.

Finally picked up HF 1x30" :) Now need to order belts. I've read that some folks can't get the 1x30 to run scotchbrite belts. Any of you guys actually used the scotchbrite belts on a HF 1x30?

They do, but I only saw really coarse stuff (lower than 220) at the one I went to. And on the coarser end of the spectrum, I hear that the Norton Blaze belts are the ones you want to get.

Sweet, congrats! Can you be a little more specific about the scothbrite not running? I know on my Delta 1x42, it tracks differently than other belts, but i have belt tracking adjustment on my Delta (not sure about the HF one).

Also, great pics as usual! I really can't wait to get back out for some hiking.

From what I remember reading (have to find the actual threads again) the 1/3 hp motor couldn't turn the relatively stiffer scotchbrite belts. It's just too underpowered to run with those belts on. I'll dig up the threads again.

I'm looking to backpack or hike president's day weekend...anyone game?

Regarding HF 1x30 and scotchbrite belts:

1x30 ScotchBrite are available at TruGrit, but may not work for you.

My 1x30 is a HF special and won't even start with a ScotchBrite belt installed.

My HF 1x30 also chokes with Scotch-Brite belts. It's hard to see how reflective your blades are, but the ones I've done with a fine grit gives a similar finish to yours.

I've been seeing people say that, I don't have a HF but a grizzly 1x30, but I'm thinking it's about the same quality. What's the issue, too tight a belt?

Scotchbrite belts are the way to go for a brushed/satin finish. I use them all the time. The final finish is done with a fine belt loaded with compound.
If the motor on your sander is small, they probably won't work as has been stated already.
Scott

I think it's not that the belt is too tight - it goes onto the wheels with less work than some belts. I think it's that it takes too much work to flex it around the wheels for that poor little 1/3 HP motor (if it's really even that strong).

From another thread:
Even refinishing a knife against the platen (say a flat ground knife) is going to chatter on the cheapo 1x30s. To save you some money and headache, i'll also tell you that the SB belts will not work on the cheap HF sanders either, they're too thick and you will just hear the motor run.

I'm thinking maybe I'll just get the Blaze lower grit belts from TruGrit, and get finer grits from Lee Valley instead of the SB belts.

No specific plan yet. Getting out for a night or two would be nice, but I haven't really thought of a destination yet. I'll post some options later, anyone who's interested feel free to post options as well

Yeah the SB belts do strain the motor a little more than normal, but i have no experience with it on the HF sander.
