Death Chat!!

A little love bit from my DE Gen3 Pikal. A constant reminder that I need to be careful with stupid sharp knives. Especially double edge ones ;)

At least it was a little one! Definitely a a good reminder. I still catch myself on occasion moving to put my left thumb on my mini-bowie's sharpened swedge....

I am looking for a SAK micro farmer. Anyone know where I can get one? I suppose a farmer would do but I want something just a tad smaller and thinner with alox handles and a saw.

Swiss Bianco does model variants every once in a while, sign up for their news letter to be informed of upcoming releases. I've seen these "bushcrafer" models before and want one:

Seems like a "mini farmer" was made sometime last year, but it was a tiny run of 50: http://www.sosakonline.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=640&Itemid=35. I always wanted a smaller second blade on my farmer. Thiis one fits your bill because it's on the smaller cadet frame, too bad it was a limited run. Probably fetches a pretty penny on secondary market....

Thanks for the link. That micro farmer in the pics that you posted are even more rare because they have black blades. The bushcrafter looks really interesting.

If I remember correctly.... I think Mike knows someone that mods SAKs. I don't think it would be hard to mod a farmer into a bushcrafter. As a matter of fact I am considering learning to do it myself as well. But I want to up the ante and make a better custom blade for mine out of s35vn.

The farmer looks to be a great all around SAK. I just know that I won't carry it daily because it is a bit too much for me to carry along with my other stuff. Right now I am thinking a cadet frame with a saw, knife, can opener/flat head, and awl. I would also like a Solo saw on a farmer frame as well.

That micro farmer looks awfully tempting right now though. I found one on a auction site 75 bucks.

Yeah, they are (rare for black tools and blade).

Yeah, there's a guy that does SAK mods, or used to: Scibeer. IIRC, SOSAK Online was the place that used to sell his mod work. If you made a custom blade for yours out of S35VN, I'd totally be in for one. My farmer is my most used knife. The only thing with going smaller on the frames, regarding the saw, is that the utility decreases with length.

$75 is not as bad as I was expecting...surprising.

Just got back from Henry Coe for some dayhiking. Nice park, especially once the sun came out. But lots of ticks.

More pics to come later, when I pull em off the P&S.

Some other pictures, to continue from above.

Lots of ticks on this visit. Found 4 at one time on my GF's pants and shoes. Adults and nymphs. Ticks concern me more than mountain lions. I've really got to get around to permethrin treating all of our hiking clothes, ticks seems to be bad this year for some reason....

Morning fog moisture condensing on ground spider webs. Actually quite an interesting thing to think about.

Acorn Woodpeckers are smart. They use the dead trees in the middle of this lake as moated granaries :)

Thanks guys :)

Oh yeah, I had my BT mini Bowie on the way there and back. NWA on while hiking But no pics of either... :o

Nice pics Russ.

I contacted swissbianco and decided to with the 84mm lumberjack instead of the micro farmer. The lumberjack has all the tools to do the same jobs as the micro farmer while being thinner and lighter. The combo bottle/can opener/wire stripper/flat head for the most part does the job of the bottle opener/flat head/wire stripper and can opener/small flat head.

I am much more likely to carry something this thin and light vs the bigger 93mm farmer which is a awesome all around knife.

Backcountry Weekend is in April, apps are due by end of Februrary. Should be an awesome opportunity to explore the less accessible (and supposedly much more scenic, esp in spring) east side of the park. I'm hoping to make it, we should all try for it. Fees are by car, so if I get a permit, I can take 2 maybe 3 others. They also have camping (car or backpacking) available, so I might try for a night or two car camp too...haven't decided yet.

I'm hoping I can make it out there this weekend for an overnighter, but it's looking iffy.

Man, I really need to get out more. Been busy lately but I really should make time to get out more often.

BTW, I also picked up a blue alox bushcrafter while I was at it ;) It was the last one they had.

Nice score! I wanted one, but could never justify picking one up. One day when I have enough surplus green stuff

Well, if I don't backpack this weekend, I should be doing a dayhike or two. I'll let you guys know, as usual anyone is welcome to join. Making time to get outside keeps me sane  Woulda thrown a shout out for this past weekend, but had the weekend blocked off for time with the GF.
