Deep Carry Clips Suck

Don't know why so many here lust over deep carry clips, just makes it harder to draw the knife. Seems like a marketing gimmick to paranoid knife knuts.
Seems like a provocatively worded statement, OP.
Perhaps you could have worded it more like: "I see no advantage to deep carry clips. Why do so many people like them?"

I would say that I like them because I don't like a lot of knife sticking up out of my pocket. I'm not trying to hide it, I just feel like the knife riding lower is less likely to catch on stuff. It probably doesn't really make a difference, but it feels more secure. If I can't easily pull the knife out of my pocket, then I know my pants are too tight.

The deep carry clip on my Endura 4 doesn’t exist. The whole knife is deep carry... in my back pocket parked next to the bandanna that props it up.

These days I carry everything in the pocket even if they have a clip.

Right hand side carry normally, deep in the pocket next to wallet with a lanyard fob of leather sticking out that I can withdraw the knife with when needed.

My preference clipped is for some of the knife to stick out though.

o_O I'm trying to understand how a DC clip helps much in being low profile or concealed . If the clip is still in view and contrasting with clothing enough to be noticeable , then aren't most people who might be concerned about a knife still gonna assume it's a knife ? (Legality aside )

Good point Doc, No great point. I have been thinking about it from a knife guys point of view for obvious reasons and most people are not knife enthusiasts. Now that I think back any time I have had issues was when my knife was in my hand and not in my pocket. You changed my view on Deep Carry clips and probably saved me some money in the future.:thumbsup:

A pocket clip keeps my knife and keys separated. That way the keys don't trash the finish of my knife.

As for the idea of deep carry clips, it just depends upon which clip design works best with a knife. My Benchmade 531 came from the factory with a split arrow clip.
Traded the clip on mine for a deep carry model. Made all the difference in the world.

I stopped using clips entirely. I wear slim-fitting pants and my knife stays upright in my pocket all day long. Not having a clip on my knife enhances the ergonomics tenfold.

Deep carry clips don't matter to me, I carry clipped knives in back side of my front pocket.
I slip finger into pocket, easily slide knife out and it's already in my hand in position to open and use.

Perhaps, yet assuming and knowing are two different things. Could be a pen, flashlight, knife, or other gizmo. I've had folks tasked to looking for prohibited items (knives and other weapons) think my pen and flashlight were a knife at first. Go figure.

I think that having the knife butt sticking out a little makes it less ambiguous. That's not why I like them, but I think it can play a part for those that do.

I prefer deep carry clips on my knives due to the extra discretion for office and church carry, and I can pull them out just as fast as knives with shallow carry, so I think deep carry clips don't suck. :-)

I don't care for deep carry clips, for me they just make the knife less convenient to draw. It's not about wanting a "quick draw" it more that I find myself having to dig a bit more for my knives with deep carry clips.

I think those of you relying on a deep carry clip to keep your knife concealed are really overestimating its effectiveness. I can see it maybe in an office environment where you want to keep a lower profile around co-workers. But anyone specifically tasked with spotting knives, such as LEO or security personnel, are going to question any kind of visible pocket clip whether there is a portion of knife visible or not. If I am really concerned about my knife being noticed I try to find a way to carry where not even the clip is visible or I just don't carry it.

Ideally I would like to see more companies offer both style of clips and keep everyone happy but I'm sure that wouldn't be cost effective. I would be more than happy to buy a non-deep carry clip for my knives that have deep carry clips but all of the aftermarket clips I've found are deep carry.

Ultimately though, if I really like a knife a deep carry clip isn't a deal breaker for me.

;) I can't resist noting that if you complement your DC clip with an ostentatious fob / lanyard festooned with skull and death's-head beads , you might possibly be defeating the low profile benefits !

Deep carry clips have their value, and don't always make the knife noticeable more difficult to draw. I also appreciate that it makes the item a little less conspicuous, as it is monumentally more noticeable when an item of contrasting color is sticking out of a pocket vs a small metal strip running down from the top of a pocket.

A good deep-carry clip makes a knife indistinguishable from a pen, which serves a social purpose of giving plausible deniability around people who have the very common mindset of seeing basically all knives as nothing short of weapons.

On the other end of the functional spectrum of deep carry clips, however:

SOG: "People really like deep-carry clips. Maybe we should put one on our knife so it'll seem less conspicuous."
Also SOG: "Let's go ahead and make it as noticeable as possible by putting a crosshair, a warning statement, and our full damn URL on it."

^ That must be for the protection of the LEO that's gonna confusticate it from you. I would love to have that clip on a cheap pen just to mess with people.

In my world, deep carry clips are for casual EDC. I prefer my mini grip, 940, and ZT0450 that way. With a deep carry they are unobtrusive and these models are still easy to get out of pocket with bare hands. My larger, heavier use knives, PM2 and BM Grizzly Creek for example, often have grippier scales which don't work well with a deep carry clip, particularly with gloves, and if I'm carrying one of those I'm doing activities where a visible knife in the pocket is a non issue.
