DEER SEASON REPORT.................How did everyone do?

Garth,

Yours is pretty nice too and what a shot! What crossbow is that. I am thinking of upgrading next year. I think I'm switch to those Horn sabots too, they have a good deal longer range than the Win Partitions I've been using.

Crossbow is made by a company called "Scorpyd". It is a pretty radical design that takes a bit to get used to. But it is flinging bolts at over 400 fps. They recommend a HHA optimizer scope mount which I got and that works great. Once sighted in you just turn the optimizer to the yardage you want to shoot and it is spot on. They claim that with the optimizer you can shoot a 3" group at 120 yards. I didn't try going out that far yet but I have my optimizer set up out to 80 yards so far and consistantly shot under 2" groups. It is a very impressive piece of equipment. It does shoot a slightly longer bolt than most crossbows so you have to order bolts through them but they are priced pretty much just like regular bolts. Overall I am very pleased with this set up.

Got a big spike and a doe within seconds of each other at last light both were the same size and I thought I was getting 2 does. I'm in a herd management area so I got plenty of tags. Everyone in my party ended up with a deer this year which is first time since 2002. My father-in-law got his biggest buck ever 7 points and 145lb dressed.
I got to try out my BJLE a few times which worked slick as snot. The BJ replacing my CABS for field work, but still used the CABS for all the boning and skinning. Neither one is mint anymore, but here's pics anyhow.

Congrats on the 2 deer. Also congrats on the success of the whole party. It is always fun when everybody gets something.

Well, I've seen about two dozen deer ... maybe 4 males. Of course, these were in my yard.:)

Wife will not let me shoot Bambi. Heck, not even Mr. Bambi.

I have taken a few deer this year. My wife has taken one as well. I have let a few small buck's walk as I am looking for 8 and outside the ears or better (horn snob I know) but I am still looking for a big bruiser to put on my wall as I have filled my fridge with venison and donated some to Farmer's and Hunter's feeding the hungry.

Good for you. My best friend raises beef and my Dad got a deer as well so I donated mine too. That is a really neat organization to those of you that don't have experience with it.

Got skunked. It was actually my first year hunting and i had a good friend showing me the ropes. Saw plenty of does and bagged a few grouse but didn't see any shooter bucks. Already looking forward to next year.

2011-12-06_19-38-27_999.jpg2011-12-06_19-38-27_999.jpgShot last night. Let a good 5.5 yr old 9 pt walk yesterday. He will be better next year. Garth be ready, as soon as season is over I am askin for orange slabs for the CABS and my Rodent Solution. I am hunting right now posting this from the stand.

Awesome buck Garth! THe crossbow is super cool too! I thought it was the Horton with the limbs.

10 Point at 0830 first day of gun season. He was at a trot with a 6 doe harem at 129 yards (lasered after he was down). Remington 870 12 ga rifled Hastings barrel, Leupold scope, with sabot slugs. Nasty raining day. I am seeing deer all over the place but only 1 for me in my county after gun season starts so I'm done. Almost forgot....Tan Yardkeeper did some of the work, wyoming knife and saw did the rest. I love that Res C when my gloved hands get bloody. Bring on the Basic 4 for next year!

Wow- that's a sweet 9pt KH.
If you stick the orange slabs on your CABS post some pics.
I was thinking of doing the same thing...maybe even added a couple spacers at the same too.

Don't sweat it. Sometimes it seems like the first one is always the hardest to get. Congrats on the grouse.

T,

Congrats on a great season so far. Hope the late season treats you just as well my friend.

Go get em Bro,

Garth

Aside from wounding a deer earlier in the season its been a good year. Shot a massive 10 pointer a few weeks ago and got some great meat from it. It was easily 220lbs and the finest looking deer Ive ever seen. Really a beautiful specimen of an animal.

Here's what my brother and I used to process it. SR101 holds its edge much longer than 1095. I used my M9 to spit the rib cage, chop its head off and chop the bottom portion of two legs off. When chopping through bone angle is everything. I chopped through the spine, rib cage, and one leg with absolutely zero damage and then chopped the final leg at too wide of an angle and chipped the crap out of the edge by the sweet spot.

Great pics so far!

My two of the season came as surprises:

The first one, one of the largest does I've ever seen got taken out by my 86 toyota 4x4 pick-up (which suffered no damage!). I had just bought the truck that day and I would have been in serious trouble if I hit her in my other car, so a lucky break in that respect. I did have my custom shop SAR3 at the time, which would have done the job beautifully, but the doe ended up hit a second time by an oncoming car and was too mutilated to harvest :-(

The second one, a small 6 pointer, lept out in front of my other car while on on my way to a morning class. I was pretty shocked to see any deer out at the hour, but there he appeared out of no where. I got lucky again in that his smaller size resulted only in minor bumper damage to the car and a few skipped heart beats. The deer lost use of its back legs from the impact and with how wildly he was trying to get away from me with his two working legs, there was no way I could safely finish him off with the Team Gemini that was riding in my trunk...I almost got a couple antlers to the chest trying to get close enough. I called a friend who was going to come meet me with his bow and lend a hand...unfortunately, a highway patrolman happened to drive by and stopped to check things out. He looked at me like I was crazy when I told him my plans and then fed me some BS about how he was required to shoot the deer and then have county roadworks or something like that come pick it up...long story short, he refused to shoot the deer until we left, basically pushed us away from the scene and I'm guessing the buck ended up going to waste.

Both of these incidents happened within a few weeks of each other, and I've had at least 6 or 7 VERY close calls with other deer in my area since that first accident. Grad-school and life haven't allowed me the pleasure of proper hunting trips this season, so I'll have to make up for it next year. Maybe sooner if I make it up to a friend's property over my winter break...

Leg bones are very hard. I have a small Wyoming meat saw that break's down in a camo pouch and is a handy tool for cutting leg bones with. A Sawsall is also handy if you have one.

All i got is wet..........................Bad year for me.......................Got 2 days to hunt next week...........Maybe then.......................carl

Garth

You have excellent taste in gear Garth, I have the exact same crossbow, hence my forum name. I also have the same shotgun combo and use the sst's.

Unfortunately I don't have the optimizer on my bow and I think it cost me a nice 10 point this year. I used the wrong reticle on my multi reticle scope and just skinned the top of the back. You can bet I will it and a single reticle scope next year.
