"Devil's Elbow" my backpacking shotgun project

Very cool shotgun. I've always wanted to try a single shot with the barrel inserts. I would think a .38/357 insert would make a really versatile companion to a single shot 12 ga but I have no idea how accurate they are.

I know a guy who set up a 12 ga SxS with a permanent (loktite) insert in .45-70 in one barrel. This was a tough little 18 inch gun that was intended to ride in a bush plane as a survival rifle. I never got to test fire it. Mac

Hi Mac, I enjoy your videos BTW. ALso your warriortalk posts.

Mac- I would get the full 18 inch one from ace at mcace.com. That way you no weird gasses going on inside the bigger barrel after the bullet exits the the shorter barrel may cause the bullet to start to tumble and all odd stuff inside the remaining length of the shotgun barrel. You don't want that. That insert would go well with your revolver. Of course, ya got to ask the question, Am I served better with the lever action 357 for my purposes??

A friend get's 2 inch groups from his 9mm insert in his 20 gauge- it's a 10 inch one I believe. hoodswoods have several good threads about it- a member has good info on them.

Of course, the little sub gauges at my uncles for the 410 and 20 out of the 12 are only the chamber ones, only 3 or so inches long, so not a lot of pressure and velocity, but I hope they will work enough for small game popping.

Why I'm getting the irons is for slugs but also for devices that you are thinking of. Ya need adjustable sights if ya want to be somewhat precise :)

Ace is having problems with his email. He will respond to phone or mail.

I have to order a 32 acp adapter for someone's 30-30 so I figured I'd ask him in letter while I order something.

I want to see if he could make a 30-30 barrel for the 12 gauge. It's listed under 20 gauge, but not 12, so I'm sure he could make it, just not listed. I would get the full 18 inch length. Not really a high priority to me, more like 5 or 10 years down the road, a lot more important issues take precedence. Or so I think at this point, but ya never know with these projects... But it would be great. I would also use 32 pistol ammo adapters that he makes in the 30-30. The 18 inch would make the 32 acp ammo somewhat quiet. Of course the "Cat's sneeze" handloads are what's really going to get em quiet. The 30 cal round puts a good amount of meat on the table compared to the size of the round. I could certainly carry more 30-30 rounds than slugs. Although, If I had to "bug out" for a rainy day, I think I'm talking a dedicated 30 cal rifle in my hands or in my person, so the 30-30 barrel may be a little overkill. But for normal woodsbummin I think it would be great!! :)

That way I would have somewhat quiet 32 ammo, shotshell choices with my adapters for small game in either the 20 gauge or 410 (whichever one I decide fits the bill), 12 gauge slugs for breaching and raw power, and a 30-30 for reaching out within reasonable distances with the iron sights.

Of course, these shotgun devices are supported in the barrel by an O ring. I've thought about replacing that with aluminum or something more stable, but softer than steel. Haven't seen anyone try that, but I think it COULD improve consistency and hence improve accuracy.

I've thought about a 22 insert, but I think I'd rather have a somewhat modified cricket at about 2.5 pounds or lighter for a dedicated .22 lr platform.

I've written emails to others but am waiting on certain responses.

Either way I'll be happy with it once it get's irons. I really should get it tapped for chokes also. All of this cost $$$$. I'll pattern it first at 25 and see how it does. In fact I think I'll go after work today and see how it does with no choke and bird shot.

I also have a 69 cal round ball mold to make pumkim ball loads. Converting the little shot from the trap load into a solid round ball- something a little more purposeful for close range medium game. I have yet to try that. I need a casting pot.

Young guy at 21 can't have it all, but he can dream! :)

The project continues... :)

EDIT: IT's funny how things change as one goes along. A combo gun say a baikal 30-06/12 gauge would be incredibly versatile just heavier, but the frame is built for RIFLE pressures.

I've been interested in chamber adapters. I know a guy... yeah, that's it... I know a guy in a certain South American country that can buy a single shot 16 ga with relatively little hassle. He also has a legal .38 special and wants to put an 18 inch adapter in the shotgun to make it a centerfire rifle.

Think a paracord wrap on the barrel would suffice as a hand guard in a pinch. Or employ a shooting stick.

Exactly my thoughts. I've seen the Springer Scouts para cord wrapped. You could also get some sticky back insulation material like "Road Kill" or something to go under the para cord. That way if you ever need to take the cord off for other tasks, you'll still have a thin layer of protection there.

Bro Scottman, I can guess the maker of that shotgun in ONE GUESS.... now.

Let me just add that the multiple gun theory doesn't work well in practice unless you are moving via vehicle. You'll find that you can't pack multiple guns and ammo. If you try carrying a 410, a 12g, and a .30 along with ammo to feed them and you'll be slow and very tired.

Hey brother! Sorry to keep you guessing for a bit in the other forum lol...

I figured the 30 cal barrel insert will weigh maybe a pound of two. Ball park.

the DE would weigh 5.5 to 6.5 pounds with the 30-30 barrel inside the 12 gauge barrel. Seeing how that's not toooo shabby on weight, i think it's possible.

the 410 and 20 gauge adapter are the size of a shotgun shell: low weight.

On the other hand if I was carrying a marlin 336, a hr pardner in 410, and the DE in 12 I see where you're going....

The Assault wheelbarrow ;)

No but honestly, This ONE firearm isn't bad for normal woodsbummin....

if I was too pack something and go out west and never see a soul for a month or so- low population density- I would pack something different most likely.

3 misses and I struck out!

somebody really needs to make an under barrel shotgun attachment they could market it as a pistol and you can stick it under the barrel of your kalashnikov...they do it with 40mm grenade launchers.just a simple 1 shot...maybe 3 shot...but for simplicity purposes 1 shot chambered for the longest 12 ga shell that way you have a wide choice of ammunition you can fire.

taurus judge.
comanche 410/45 pistol.
Clamp em on.

Through the 45/410 you can achieve what you desire without an SBS. In other words, a lot less legal hassle. Not sure if it is considered an SBR, probably is because you have a "stocked" pistol now.

"classic" ha that makes me smile :)

Spies, OH NO!! I have to hide!

14", man, those Canadian gun laws are lax. Next you'll be telling me that you can get M1A/M14 knock-offs for $400.

:p;)

Tell me about it, but then everytime I come down to MI for work and all I see are gun rags covered in AR, not to mention all the dang deers road kills! Green is greener on the other side...always.:D:D

I really like your shotgun, as it's blah simple and compact in this form. Although something like an 20 ga. will work for most all and any situations the 12 is really the most universal in what it can do. You can make a 12 shoot like a 20, you can never make an 20 shoot like an 12 and perform it task for task.

Simply said you have a good stick there and the folks like yesteryear's mtn men would have liked to have had one.

For anyone interested, CZ USA has an folding single shot 20 ga. that has now been discontinued for 2010. They are availible still thru dealers until the supply runs out. I plan on ordering one tomorrow and doing some similiar mods as have been addressed in this thread.

Thank you Scottman for showing us you stone simple shotgun. A tool that can take on anything flying or walking in N. America.

I have an adapter to allow me to shoot 20 gauge. It was 10 dollars.

:)

The 12 is for tricks. But to be honest I wouldn't feel bad about having a 20 gauge. I like this though with the adapters because I can shoot both.

I'm betting if it's a CZ it has a decent trigger.
