Hi Mac, I enjoy your videos BTW. ALso your warriortalk posts.
Mac- I would get the full 18 inch one from ace at mcace.com. That way you no weird gasses going on inside the bigger barrel after the bullet exits the the shorter barrel may cause the bullet to start to tumble and all odd stuff inside the remaining length of the shotgun barrel. You don't want that. That insert would go well with your revolver. Of course, ya got to ask the question, Am I served better with the lever action 357 for my purposes??
A friend get's 2 inch groups from his 9mm insert in his 20 gauge- it's a 10 inch one I believe. hoodswoods have several good threads about it- a member has good info on them.
Of course, the little sub gauges at my uncles for the 410 and 20 out of the 12 are only the chamber ones, only 3 or so inches long, so not a lot of pressure and velocity, but I hope they will work enough for small game popping.
Why I'm getting the irons is for slugs but also for devices that you are thinking of. Ya need adjustable sights if ya want to be somewhat precise
Ace is having problems with his email. He will respond to phone or mail.
I have to order a 32 acp adapter for someone's 30-30 so I figured I'd ask him in letter while I order something.
I want to see if he could make a 30-30 barrel for the 12 gauge. It's listed under 20 gauge, but not 12, so I'm sure he could make it, just not listed. I would get the full 18 inch length. Not really a high priority to me, more like 5 or 10 years down the road, a lot more important issues take precedence. Or so I think at this point, but ya never know with these projects... But it would be great. I would also use 32 pistol ammo adapters that he makes in the 30-30. The 18 inch would make the 32 acp ammo somewhat quiet. Of course the "Cat's sneeze" handloads are what's really going to get em quiet. The 30 cal round puts a good amount of meat on the table compared to the size of the round. I could certainly carry more 30-30 rounds than slugs. Although, If I had to "bug out" for a rainy day, I think I'm talking a dedicated 30 cal rifle in my hands or in my person, so the 30-30 barrel may be a little overkill. But for normal woodsbummin I think it would be great!!
That way I would have somewhat quiet 32 ammo, shotshell choices with my adapters for small game in either the 20 gauge or 410 (whichever one I decide fits the bill), 12 gauge slugs for breaching and raw power, and a 30-30 for reaching out within reasonable distances with the iron sights.
Of course, these shotgun devices are supported in the barrel by an O ring. I've thought about replacing that with aluminum or something more stable, but softer than steel. Haven't seen anyone try that, but I think it COULD improve consistency and hence improve accuracy.
I've thought about a 22 insert, but I think I'd rather have a somewhat modified cricket at about 2.5 pounds or lighter for a dedicated .22 lr platform.
I've written emails to others but am waiting on certain responses.
Either way I'll be happy with it once it get's irons. I really should get it tapped for chokes also. All of this cost $$$$. I'll pattern it first at 25 and see how it does. In fact I think I'll go after work today and see how it does with no choke and bird shot.
I also have a 69 cal round ball mold to make pumkim ball loads. Converting the little shot from the trap load into a solid round ball- something a little more purposeful for close range medium game. I have yet to try that. I need a casting pot.
Young guy at 21 can't have it all, but he can dream!
The project continues...
EDIT: IT's funny how things change as one goes along. A combo gun say a baikal 30-06/12 gauge would be incredibly versatile just heavier, but the frame is built for RIFLE pressures.
