First, on a serious note, Cheney may usually follow good habits, but on this day he violated one of the four fundamental rules of gun safety..."Be sure of your target and what's behind it." It was Cheney's responsibility to watch out not only for members of his own party (no pun intended), but for anyone who may have wandered into penetrating shotgun range. Accidents happen, but it is necessary to assign responsibility or they will be repeated.
On the "hunt defensively" side of the issue, I never hunt quail in a party without wearing a blaze orange hat and wraparound safety glasses. (For dove lose the hat but keep the glasses.) People tend to get excited and forget their good habits. Getting pelted in the ass with pellets is funny. Losing an eye or two is not. About a year ago in the mountains above Los Alamos, a turkey hunter in the vicinity of a campground blinded a camper who had gone out for a walk before dinner. The turkey hunter had fired a magnum shell in the campers direction because he "heard something in the bushes". Forgot to "be sure of his target".
Then there was the deer hunter in Texas who had climbed a tree to watch a game trail. He was shot dead with a rifle by a turkey hunter who "thought he was a turkey." (Same rule.) Chuckles are permitted here though. Maybe the guy was a turkey. In which case he should have known to stay out of the woods.
What I can't figure is why Cheney was so careful hunting with Scalia.
