Dipping My Toe Into 3 Axis Machining...

Really impressive work. Thank you for sharing the progress.

Count me as being in line for contoured Para 3 scales as soon as you are ready to take on customers.

I just finished up machining the MKII set of carbon fiber Delica/Lil'Para scales. This MKII version had some added thickness so that I could have slightly deeper hardware pockets. They machined perfectly and look terrific so I'll lock down the code and add this file to my portfolio.

I used my last piece of carbon fiber and I'm now completely out. I purchase my CF sheets from FiberSmith and for the last 9 or 10 months the availability of their .150" and .170" 2X2 6K plain weave remains SOLD OUT. I just sent an inquiry message so I await that response. No ability to fill orders until I am able to restock.

With Thanksgiving a very much reduced affair this year I was able to spend a cohesive chunk of hours in front of the computer attempting to learn some more of the ins and outs with 3d machining. I very much wanted to discover how to map a set of texture vectors onto a surface contour. It wasn't going well and I almost gave up in frustration... BUT... perseverance paid off. I stumbled onto a technique that with a bit more play time may achieve the desired results.

Here's a few CAD renders showing a contoured Delica/Verrazano... the first pic is the result of the 40 degree raster operation I've selected to machine the scales contour. The bit stepover rate of 40% results in the angled furrows. The second pic takes the machining result you see in the first pics after I was able to successfully map and machine a set of wavy lines onto the contoured scales surface. The third pic is another successful mapping of another set of wavy lines.

These exist as digital art renders only at this point in time. I'll need to write the code and proof machine one or both before I can actually say I learned something...!

these look about perfect. You have a great handle shape, contouring, and matching texturing. Sign me up.

Thank you for that compliment...!

I just happened to machine a set of those Delica/Verrazano scales this morning. They machined beautifully and the material choice of black burlap Micarta with toxic green G10 liners looks stellar...! Here's a teaser photo...

If you wish and live in the US... I'll send the prototypes to you... just cover the postage and poly bubble mailer envelope costs... $4.50...
Wow, thanks! That’s very generous. I sent you a private message. I’m also in Oregon.

And that right there, is why Steve can have All my business!
I already own 7 sets of Boomer52 scales and can't wait for my next set, for my M4 Military!

I've modeled the Military for full contour. I don't like tip down though... it's violates some primal tenet and I refuse to machine a tip down version.

I've exhausted my supply of pocket clip attachment backing plates for the tip up conversion and the supplier I originally contracted with to machine my first order of 50... tripled his prices when I attempted to order another 50. So the Military has gone the way of the Dodo... for me it is extinct.
