Disappointing Customer Service Refusal Due to Mod

Haha agreed, kind sir! Fortunately that's not my knaf!

And I'll go ahead and take a Dr. Pepper on the rocks!

Purely supposition on my part, but CRK may be refusing servicing on these to discourage people from buying them. I am sure CRK doesn't like that some have gone into business modifying and selling their knives, and refusal of service is one tool CRK has to kill this practice. There may be other reasons such as not up to specs/legal also, but as word gets around that they can't be serviced I would think less and less would buy them.

Good point. I know CRK has asked other modders in the past (The guy doing Auto conversions and Tom Mayo) to stop doing the mods. I'm surprised they haven't done so with the Spydie-Hole mod but I'm not really sure how many peopel are doing them? Is it being done by one person mostly or is everyone with a nice drill press knocking these out?

I really haven't paid enough attention to who is doing them. I know one person/company is doing them, but there likely are others. There have been a bunch on Ebay
When doing a search I did see mention of the mod back to 2008.

I understand the OPs disappointment but I also understand CRKs stance on the matter. I think this is a live and learn situation. If it were me I would ask to send the knife in and get a new blade with washers. I hope this works out and you end up with a usable knife. I think any time you mod a knife you should consider the warranty void regardless of whether or not the mod is a direct cause of the issue.

The fine print does say that if a knife is modded, they will not service it. If, and keyword IF, they decide to service it, you’d have to pay for new parts to replace the modded ones.

Number 1. Big hole in the blade, not under warranty, and 21 blade replacements are warranty-only.

Number 2. Yeah the mod has nothing to do with the washers but I think CRK’s thought process here is everything was working fine, knife was modded, now a part is damaged and needs replacement. Put two and two together. Not saying that’s what happened, it’s just from my perspective, if I were CRK I wouldn’t extend service to the knife even if it was paid for.

Not trying to be mean or condescending, I’m just known for being very blunt.

unfortunately that is no longer an option. they are reserving all 21 blades they have for warranty work, at this point

I can see why they don’t want to warranty it. They are probably worried the hole in the blade will cause it to crack eventually.

Maybe, if asked very nicely, they would sell the OP of the 21 blades reserved for warranty. I imagine they have quite a few of them in stock at this point.

It was several years ago but they sent me a new set for a large one. If they are the same as small I think I have a set.

I think the spydie hole mod looks great and its functional for using a crk as an edc in a workplace where you wear gloves ie...any job which you are outside and not in an office space. I happen to own a few crks and I would just buy washers from a knife supply and drill my own holes in them or leave them solid if I didn't have a drill press. I know a few guys that hate the holes in the washers because they attract gunk and crap or the grease gets nasty which make the action terrible so the prefer solid washers on their crk.

Honestly this mod is fugly, but to each their own. CRK’s refusal to work on modded knives has been long standing. 21 blades are now reserved for warranty. It’s pretty simple...!!

Chris Reeve is almost legendary in his ideals that the Sebenza should never be modded by anyone. Also the washers are hand fitted to each individual knife, so they can't just send them out.

The washers, blade, and handle are all part of a system. Washers are hand fitted to each system. Drilling a huge hole in the blade under unknown specifications or impact on heat treatment pose a risk to the manufacture if it were to leave their factory. They would assume full liability if it were "serviced" against their clearly stated policy. Solution: Find out how to acquire phosphor bronze bushings, and hand adjust them to your knife system. BTW, I never heard anyone damage their factory bushings after owning a Sebenza since the 90's. They may consider the blade hole and damaged bushing as a pattern of abuse and risk of some type of litigation. It's the world we live in these days.

Just sell the washers ffs.
No one cares about your groveling and boot licking opinions.
CRK is there to make money. Just sell the washers.
Insert simple clause "warranty voided - here are your washers"
Grow up bud and grow a pair.

The point is that CRK fits the washers to the blade. Not all washers are potentially equal. When you buy a sebenza, you are getting a tool that is uniquely assembled. The washers are hand polished at assembly to adjust the action by CRK. So a new set of washers being mailed will not necessarily solve OPs problem. They need to be fit and adjusted by CRK to ensure the knife is up to spec. This isn't about making money, this is about preserving the integrity of their product, period. They have a right to do that, and they have invoked that right.

This is one of those situations where I should be the bigger man and just let it go. But I haven't had my coffee this morning and this particular situation has me between a figurative rock and a.. well a hard pill to swallow. The rock being you, a hardheaded pebble.
You obviously don't own a CRK, why're you replying on a topic in which you know nothing about?
Chris Reeve didn't build the company to make money. A lot of the money he made went right back into his company.
This next point has been stressed many times, but since you obviously cannot comprehend this simple concept, let me reiterate it for you in the simplest terms I can manage.

Washers are hand-fit to each knife. Washers are. Hand-fit. To each knife. Washer on knife. Washer is taken off. Swishswishswish on an abrasive surface. Washer back on. Washer cannot be hand-fit to a knife that is not present. No swishswishswish.

Hope that clears it up! Have a great day, sweaty neckbeard.
