Disgusted with Boker ads

Gee... I guess now we'll have to boycott Boker for caving in to the liberal, PC sheeple.

They did not really say what the reason for stopping the ad was. I had provided them with a link to this thread so it is quite likely that they read it. I do not think that my comments alone would cause them to take such an action, so it is likely that they have had other complaints, but I do not know this for certain.

CPR, since when did TEd Turner own all media? ABC is owned by Disney, CBS is part of Viacom, NBC is part of GE. These are all large faceless corporations that are not exactly liberal or progressive. I for one am left wing and proud of it. I also am a knife nut and have been one my whole life. As knife nuts, we are a minority. We need to work together for maintaining knife rights and promoting the legal and positive use of knives. That is why I am against the Boker ads. </font>

Thanks Anthony you beat me to it. My point in my last post is that if people believe that all "liberals" are out to get their knives and guns, and that all "conservatives" are their buddies in that issue, then they are over simplifying. That's why I almost always put those words in quotes because they have almost no meaning. So we can politically divide every American into two ideaologies? Perhaps it's a biproduct of our heavily two party system. I think that most of the "conservatives" in this country are merely fiscally conservative. They don't think about the 2nd ammendment one way or another, as long as they are making money everything is fine with them.

Don't worry CPR you certainly didn't hurt my feelings. I don't consider myself "liberal" any more than I do "conservative". There are a lot of issues that I feel strongly about that would make most people label me "conservative". Several other issues I am concerned about would put me on the "liberal side". Most of my friends that proudly label themselves one way or the other consider me to be the opposite because I don't agree with all of their beliefs. My main concern politically is that Americans, as individuals, continue to have as much freedom as possible as long as they are not harming anyone else. Unfortunately most both "sides" that we are forced to choose from want to take away somebody else's freedom.

The real problem is that in order to maintain our freedom we all have to act responsibly, and I don't feel that these ads were responsible. Funny? Yes, but irresponsible. To believe that only knife people read knife magazines is too good to be true. Family values proponents spend a good deal of time and money watching porn and every other thing they find objectionable so they can use it to suit their purposes. Anti gunners read all of the gun literature and websites they can, so they can use it to their advantage. I have no doubt that there is some individual or grout that is monitoring these forums so they can keep track of what the Knife Knuts are up too. "Know your enemies," comes to mind. Look what Jim March did to the Million Mom people, simply by paying attention to what they are doing. That sword cuts both ways. That's why we have to promote knives in a reasonable manner, as tools or self defense weapons. People can call that caving in if they want to. I call it knowing what battles are important, and knowing when to retreat a little in order to gain more ground on the next push.

BTW I value everyones' opinion in this thread (does that make me PC?). I just don't agree with all of them. I would be afraid if I did.

This is a good thread. Having worked in the advertising and graphic design business for 20+ years in Dallas, NYC and here in Germany, I've wondered what the h_ll Böker was thinking with their ads for quite a while. The "creat an emergency situation" ad is only the latest in a series of silly, irresponsible ads they've run. BTW, I have NOT seen this series here in Germany. And I'd have serious doubts if they would be able to run it here.

Böker's problem isn't that no one knows of their products, it's that they have a serious image and quality control problem with their products! Hello! Look how many people who've replied to this thread have mentioned negative quality.

Böker is an old-line company who make pretty good to excellent slip joint folders, etc. That's left them shut out of the lucrative market for tactical, liner locking folders. And the one's they've brought out have faced an uphill battle (pun intended) against the US companies like Benchmade and Spyderco - not to mention Microtech. So what do they do: they run ads that imply owning their products make it easy to break laws; as if being armed gives one the freedom to do as one pleases. Wrong.

Hey Böker: people who buy and use multiple knives (knife nuts) are PRODUCT ORIENTED. If your products suck, they won't buy 'em. And word will get around. Fast. Also I'd estimate that about 99%+ of all these potential customers are honest, law abiding folks who place a high value honesty, personal freedom and traditional family values. Being a rugged individualist is good; robbing and stealing because you're too sorry to work (as my Grandfather would say) is bad.

Taking advantage of other people through power of arms is also bad. (Buck Knives are you listening?) Owning a knife isn't a license to use it in an irresponsible way.

What would happen if say, a noted US maker of handguns were to run an ad with the following headline above a photo of one of their semi-auto handguns:

"Tired of paying high prices at the grocery store? Name your own price: how about 'free?'

I bet they would get some publicity alright... :-)

I hope both Böker and Buck will do some rethinking of their advertising strategies.
