I understand your position. we just dont agree completely and that's fine. I dont think there is any instance where i dont control how I feel about words tossed at me.

I'm the captain of my own ship I steer it where i want to. no one else does. I dont see other people as victims. I see them as captains as well.

back on topic.... this name of the knife isnt offensive unless someone is very very overly touchy and sensitive.

So, let’s say somebody walked up and called your SO a $&@?”#+*!...

Can you still choose not to be offended, or would those words carry some weight then? Could you steer your ship on down the road, Captain?

If anybody insulted my wife in my presence, they’d be wearing their ass for a hat. The name of this knife is shitty, IMO, but I don’t highly value the company anyway.

what's an SO?

Significant Other.

gotcha. didnt know that abbrev.

words dont really get to me....now remember I started off talking about a knifes name, so on topic. boon asked if everything, and so I elaborated on everything. we can continue down that path or stick to the knife's name being offensive.

to answer your question anyone who would act that way would be either insane, on drugs or booze or or a troublemaker wanting a violent reaction. I've never encountered that, have you? guess I'd have to find out to see how this captain would steer his ship.:D

Gunnery Sgt. Hartman says: "Didn't mommy and daddy give you enough attention when you were a child?!"

Of course it's distasteful and Greg is laughing his ass off that you're offended, it makes it all worthwhile.

Absolutely I have. I guess we hang in different crowds. Rest assured, words can indeed get your goat. It just depends on the situation. Even the names of some things can be instantly offensive, again depending on the situation and maybe your history.

The world seems to be easily offended by everything these days. That said, some things truly are outright offensive.

I’m not much bothered by the name of the knife, but I can see how some would be.

and I always though texas had some southern politeness to it...go figure.....:)

youre right on some words in some situations making me or anyone for that matter angry or upset but I try, key word is try, to choose to remember its just words.

back on topic topic.....it is a dumb name for a knife, to me. sure some folks will be upset I think that, but I do.

Heh, most Texans are very hospitable. The folks I hang out with are sometimes unpredictable.

The knife has a crappy name but it doesn’t bother me much personally. I can see how it would rub some folks the wrong way. Most of their knives are unappealing to me, and this one is probably no different. I didn’t even bother to google it. :)

See the word “growl” on a piece of paper. Does this cause any fear? Hopefully not.

Hear the “growl” come from a Rottweiler ten feet away. Does this cause any fear? Most likely.

Comparing words on a piece of paper or words attributed to an inanimate object do not induce stress, nor are they considered offensive to me. If you are offended by words on a piece of paper/computer screen, this is a learned behavior. Do with it what you will.

Having a person, potentially an adversary verbally attack me with similar words will induce stress and may be considered offensive/threatening. This is a physiological reaction that is genetically inherited. It is supposed to cause fear which will trigger either fight or flight.

These are two different things being discussed AntDog AntDog jbmonkey jbmonkey @all

I can think of a few words I could see on a piece of paper that would instantly piss me off. I’m sure you can too. Anybody can.

On the other hand, somebody could walk up and say something completely benign and get my hackles up. It all depends on context.

In this case it’s a knife. If you’ve ever been close to somebody who’s taken their own life, I’d imagine the name of the knife might offend you. Even the words on a piece of paper.

Just saying words can offend. Wether spoken or written.

Depends on the context and intent , THAT'S what matters ...not words alone !

I can't. Genuinely. I can't think of a word or phrase that could offend me in print without context and intent.

AntDog AntDog - I get where you come from. My point is that I believe you can have more control over your world around you...sorry if I sound like a crazy shrink!

This is why organizations like green ribbon, see the change, stop the stigma, service reform exist in Ireland we challenge companies and corporations that use what we deem as unhelpful language. Its the same motivation that has seen words like retard, nigger or spastic is frowned upon it could really be damaging for business. A great many people want change in how certain words are used. I am one of those people. I think the name is distasteful for a knife and personally wouldn't support any company that would sell a product with such a disgusting name. We have 1000 suicides a year in Ireland thats over 3 times our national road deaths. Its not a joke or being over sensitive or easily offended its actually just a really shit knife name.

You're assuming he's using the word suicide in that context though. Is calling a particularly gnarly ski run a "suicide run" or calling a jewish man's attempt to get his girlfriend's VERY catholic mother's blessing for marriage a "suicide mission" offensive? How about "suicide doors" on a car?

You're free to be offended by whatever you want, but that knife has nothing to do with your deceased comrades. I'm not diminishing your loss in any way or making light of legitimate suicide, I'm just saying that conflating the use of a simple word with your loss, regardless of context is unfair.

Do unto others right... Are you infallible? Have you never said anything in one context that someone could've chosen to be offended by? Why assume some indifference on Greg's part when YOU could give him the benefit of doubt and just assume he was going for something that you just

Distasteful? Sure.
Offensive? Who cares. I choose not to be offended by words. I laugh to my self. Think that person is a moron, smile and walk away.

As to the thread drift:
People who say offensive things are looking for a reaction. Don’t give it to them. It is literally like walking into an ambush.

This is where our points of view differ. I think most PC movements and organizations are lead by weak people who want to play the victim and use their victim status to control others. It's a power play. (This obviously doesn't include movements against physical violence, economic oppression, etc. I'm only talking about compelling the speech of others.)

I value free speech higher than anything else in our society. 100% free. That includes speech that isn't pleasant. Listeners, readers, etc. have to have the discipline to judge the value in that speech and either continue to engage or simply move along.

Purposely conflating the name of a knife model with the suicide rate in your country seems like asking a drifter to hold your jewelry. You opted in. Being mad at Greg Medford because you've lost friends to suicide is like being mad at a police force when the drifter you gave your jewelry to takes off.

Communication goes both ways. If you choose to take offense to something that wasn't intended to offend I think it's wrong to treat the sender negatively.

That's my issue with some of this thread. I disagree with taking offense to the name, but respect the feelings of those who do. To treat Greg or Medford knives as if he attacked you though is inarguably ridiculous and more offensive in turn than the knife name could ever have been.

Agreed, there is nothing personal about the knife name. It's just Greg being Greg, a bit crass, a bit abrasive and unapologetic.
Should he probably tone down certain names? Yeah, sure. But it's his knife and company. So if he asks for my opinion I tell him. But nobody should tell him that he can't or isn't allowed to.
As you said, it plays into free speech. But it seems people have forgotten what that means unfortunately.
