Do carry a folder that's longer the legal limit or are you legal where you live?

This has to be one of the most asinine things I've read since I've been on this forum.

Mike

No blade limit.

It's police discretion.
If you can't explain why you carry a knife, or seem shady or nervous, you will lose it.

I think that's fair. If you can't explain why you carry a knife you should lose it, and I personally don't want you carrying one...

Of all the dumb ass idiotic assinine laws i have to "contend" with in NYS, blade length limits are not one of them. Go figure. New York City is a different story, and luckily i dont live there, nor go there.
I carry a mille, large Sebenza and lately a ZT 0452 4.1" blade which im liking quite a bit more than i had thought. Anyway, nope, no limits here on length.

In the great state of Georgia, I can carry any knife I want with my Weapons Permit. I carry autos regularly. So I haven't really had to worry about breaking the law because of my knife.

When I was a teenage dumbass I would sport all manner of massive hunting knives, machetes, brass knuckles, axes and big lockers. None of which were legal to do so as I had absolutely no 'good reason' other than it felt good to be a baddass lol. Me and my buddies would all carry stupidly large blades and do absolutely nothing with them, intimidate noone and just walk around.. Pointless really, but I was buying in dozens of new toys each week with my earnings and selling them to friends for small profit. We weren't bad kids, just stupid and bored.

Law here in England says without 'good reason' i.e religious, work or hobbies like fishing/camping etc you can only carry a non locking folding knife with a cutting edge under 3". Cannot carry any article as a weapon though, that will get you in alot of trouble and with a record!

I've got too much to lose to bother with any disregards to legalities. A sub 3" slippy does all the jobs, albeit with less cool factor but still does them.

I live outside city limits, no blade restrictions
I work in city limits 3.5" restriction.
I typically carry blades over 3.5", I need more blade and more belly for some of the stuff I cut. And besides, I'm a big guy, so I like big knives. As long as you arent walking around flashing it trying to stab people, the cops tend to be polite about it.
"Oh sir, do you have any weapons?"
"No weapons here, just a pocket knife."
"May I see it?"
hand him my Boker Dark Hollow and CRKT Foresight
"Ahh, nice knives, I carry an AL Mar Sere myself."
No problems with it, he just told me not to try to stab him and we'd be good. Cool cop, nice guy. But I don't normally carry under 3.5" unless it's a day where I feel like carrying my Griptilian or my various Kershaws.

There's a 3.5" length limit in Yakima? News to me.

Now in Seattle I know there's a length limit and sometimes cops think it applies to the whole state. But I'm pretty sure Yakima has no length limit, at least not one I've been able to nail down a particular statute for.

Edit:
Shows how much of an issue it really is though lol

I had to search and search trying to find if there was one or not, curiosity got the best of me. I finally got confirmation about a limit when I had to go to the Sheriff's department to get fingerprinted for my CCP. *Walked right in with them same 2 blades in my pocket* The deputy was more than happy to help me decipher the codes.
Chapter 6.44.010 defines dangerous weapons then in Chapter 6.44.040 it gives all the legal mumbo-jumbo about it with exemptions.

I agree with you 100% it doesn't really seem like an issue at all. I don't even think the local LEO's see it as an issue, unless you're brandishing it saying you're going to stab somebody, but then it's a whole nother ball game that that person needs to be worried about.

I'm completely legal. Couldn't be illegal if I wanted to. California does not have a length limit. Some cities do, but San Diego does not.

My state has no length limits, and only one restriction that says you can't carry concealed, a Bowie or like knife.

However, there is a patchwork of local municipaliities, and some of them have restrictions. So you can be legal in one spot, and illegal a mile down the road. It's ridiculous, so I don't worry about it.

This is a region where hunting, fishing, and the 2nd amendment are a way of life anyway. The majority of the people I know carry knives, and have CCW's.

If you are stopped by the police, and are carrying a concealed firearm, you are required to inform the officer that you are carrying. Most of the time if you show a cop your CCW, they just ask if your carrying, and say ok.

One time I got pulled over for a traffic violation by a cop in one of the smaller municipalities, and when I showed him my CCW, and informed him I was carrying, he made me get out of the car, patted me down, and took my gun so he could run the serial number. He asked me if I had any other weapons, and I told him I had a pocket knife and he was completely unconcerned about it, and did not even ask to see it. I've never met a cop that showed any concern over a pocket knife.

I have even on one occasion compared Spyderco's with a cop. He had a had a Police, and he liked my Manix2 light weight.

It seems like any local knife laws are just used as something that they can pile on if you get arrested for something else.

Sorry about the wall of text.

Cool thanks for that info, I've been referring to the state statutes for years. None of my knives are longer than that anyway but still nice to know :D

But yeah here in Yakima, most people are pretty knife friendly. I've had police officers ask me about my knives or the sharpening hone I use in my wallet when going through metal detectors and stuff. At the courthouse here they even have lockers you can go put them in and retrieve them on your way out.

As far as I've heard, the only ones they really consider "illegal" are ones the gang members carry that are so loosened at the pivot they fall open coming out of the pocket--but those ones are obviously intended to be used as weapons.

I carry legal - period. I always carried legally. Knife or firearm.

I thought/think that some laws were/are confusing, stupid or wrong but I still obeyed them where I used to live and out here too.

Why would a person have to EXPLAIN why they carry a knife?! Huh? Some poster mentioned this. That he needs a reason to explain WHY he needs a knife. Say what?

If the person is obeying the KNIFE LAWS in his state, in a city or in the boonies, or in some other state... why does he NEED TO EXPLAIN jack squat?

I carry a knife for self defense since I no longer own, shoot or carry handguns. I used to carry a handgun on a regular basis, compete and shoot a LOT. I am a former high volume shooter.

I carry a knife and sometimes I carry a lever action or a bolt action rifle too. I still practice my self defense shooting only with a rifle more since I do not shoot handguns.

Gee, I use scissors and an axe for the right job too. I use garden pruning tools too.

Confused Cate

I have always followed knife laws to the letter when it came to what type/charactistics of a knife was and was not legally allowed. That said, concealed carry of any knife is considered illegal in my town. Concealed firearms are perfectly acceptable though:rolleyes:
