Do the ethics of a knife maker/company matter to you?

That's ok. I don't buy so and so's knives either.

You're missing out, Frank! John and Jim So, of "So and So's Knives", make great blades. They're former spec-ops legends who stab their knives through car doors!:p

Having fun,

I like the 'it's just a knife' argument, I use it myself.

It's just a knife, so I base buying decisions on other stuff surrounding the product. A knife isn't that hard to make, or make well, yet there is a ton of competition. Jump through hoops (like meeting my standard on ethics, business practice, netiquette, etc) to get my money, boys - I already have more steel than things to cut.

It's interesting who's names rise to the top of these type threads. I was reading some archive threads this week and a "meltdown" in 2003 caught my eye. I watched the same person have a "meltdown", on another board, in 2005. Those actions speaks more to me than the BS floating around the web.

I support those knife makers that I can get behind. You know, the ones that have a good produce, excellent service and keep the drama to a minimum.

3G,

Now THAT'S funny right there, I don't care who you are, that's funny right there.

What's sad about it though, you have no idea what I'd be willing to pay to get some good produce up here on the coast of the Bering Sea. Last time the store here had corn, it cost me $12.99 for 4 ears. I bought a medium sized Texas Grey watermelon for just over $25.00.

Yup, you read that right: $25.00. No kidding.

Thanks, Alaskanativeson. Nothing like a little humor to lighten the mood, and with the produce prices you're paying, I imagine you could sure use some. Man, the things we (in California) take for granted sometimes!

Regards,
3G

Alaskanativeson,

I've rafted/fished a few of your beautiful rivers (Goodnews, Arolik, Kwethluk, Eek, Kisaralik, etc.) and I've felt the same pain---and that was during the summer.

Knife content: I carried a Busse Basic 9 for large jobs, a filet knife, a SAK, and a backup or two. I own a couple knives from controversial makers but they were mainly purchased before the brown stuff went airborne. I'd have to think twice today.

DWK2, you should be able to appreciate this then:

This was when we lived in the Kuskokwim Mtns. There certainly aren't any trees or mountains like that out here on the Yukon Delta. There are plenty of salmon, but then I hate salmon.

Man! Living in Alaska and not liking salmon---must be tough!!!! That's like living in California and not liking nuts!:D Anyway, I would definitely dine on that fish with great pleasure. I got some nice sheefish on the Eek and those are also pretty tasty.

One of my favorite humorous comments on ethics is on a t-shirt I got from Chilkoot Charlie's in Los Anchorage: "We cheat the other guy and pass the savings on to you!"

Hi Psychopomp,

FYI, 100% of the proift from the WTC project went to the Widows & Orphans fund. Everyone paid full boat ($225), even my family, for theirs. The only non paying pieces went to President Bush (#911) and mayor Giuliani (#2001).

sal

Did you give them knives with those numbers on purpose?

It does matter to me because companies like Spyderco, SOG, and RAT get it so right there is no reason for me to give my money to a company that has ethics I dont dig.

Not only that but the ethics of the places I buy from matter to me, Thank you New Graham and Knife center.

I dunno. It's a knife.

No one ever told me I could only buy knives made by people that had never sinned.

But now I hear people hate so and so cause he fibbed. Or hate what's his name cause he stabbed a car. That's a lot of hating over a knife.

These days I kinda like Case knives. The designs aren't original. I don't know how the workers are treated. The company is owned by a publicly traded corporation.

They seem to fail all your parameters.

But they make good knives. And I intend to buy more.

Exactly.

Integrity first, and ethics second are BOTH primary considerations for me when I purchase a knife (or many other things).

Integrity is THE only thing each of us really "owns" that NO ONE can TAKE from us... but many choose to give it away on a whim. I won't give them my money.

As to ethics... these fall into a category similar to morals, and that makes it a tougher call. I would prefer to give my money to someone who believes as I believe, but of course, one never knows. If I did know the "ethics" of two sellers (all else being equal), I'd give my money to the one who best mirrored my beliefs.

50/50 on the integrity thing. I have some Cold Steels that are fine knives and I listen to Lynn Thompson sometimes and laugh. Don't own any Striders for sure.
