Do you only carry a knife to use?

Like the question says, is the knife you carry, only carried to be used? Now I know this may seem moronic, and maybe I'm just a moron:eek:;) I just answered a post about carrying a big or small knife and made me think of this. I always go out the door with 2 folding knives in my pocket. In my right front pocket is a large, single bladed knife that has a pocket clip that places the entire knife within my pocket, and it is the only thing in that pocket. Does it get used? Very, very rarely does it get pulled out to use. I mainly carry this knife because, 1- I like it, 2- I'm a knife fanatic, 3- It makes me feel ....for lack of a better term, complete. I enjoy carrying such a knife because I like to show it to certain people who can appreciate what it is. Now I don't live close to any knifeknuts, and the folks I show it to are friends that appreciate finer things. The knives I carry range anywhere from $125 to over $1000. I never tell them the price I paid because that is a whole new thread! But I'm really curious if anyone else does this?

I just don't need a knife everyday for the work I do, but I still carry. The large one as explained above, and then the smaller one is a slipjoint that has a closed length between 3.5" to 4.0". This is the knife that get used when I have need of a knife. Cutting string, sharpening a pencil, or cutting paper are the main chores of my knife use.

So again, anyone else carry a knife that is not really used, but carried because you like it and you show it to buddies?? Or am I the only fruitcake out here??

Im sure most of us do sometimes.
I usually go to work with 3 knives. I use 2 of them thoughout the day. The 3rd is my KaBar Last Ditch self defense knife that is paracorded to my belt, never use it to cut anything so the Wicked Edge I put on it stays Razr sharp for when it needs to go active duty.

my current edc's are a SAK tinker and a spyderco military. the military is used about 5 times a day for cutting food, small cardboard boxes, plastic wrap, zip ties etc...... small thinngs every knife can do. and the SAK is for the screw drivers and tooth pick mainly. i will use the blade on the sak if im in public because using a military in public is not a way to make friends where i live. i cant tell you how many times i have gotten the question "why do you carry a knife? thats scarry " i of course give the smart ass answer " to cut things ".

even worse i always get the question "why do you carry a flashlight? ". the only time people see it is when i pull it out to use. then they say " how often do you use that dumb thing? " while i have it in my hand turned on because they are trying to use a cell phone screen to find their dropped item . hey jack*** i only have mine out because you dont carry one and you are the one who needed to see in the dark

some people cant be helped

Lol , yup , your nuts.:D

I always carry a folder. Only one. Never saw a need to carry two , but my bag always has a spare of some sort. No bag? Then just the one.

When I'm carrying a fixed blade , the folder is always there as well.

I don't care what anyone else thinks around me. I carry and use what I want. The folder ( whatever model in rotation at the time) gets used on average a dozen times a day , everyday. Opening mail, packages , pallet straps , boxes , sharpening pencils , picking my teeth , scraping stuff , etc...

Everyone has their own way of using what they have. Some never use at all.

People who don't carry a flashlight , are usually in the dark when nightime comes . I have yet to find a way of producing my own light , short of starting a fire..

I forgot about the flashlight as I never leave home without one, and the one is a 4Sevens Preon 1. It is a small, shirt pocket clipped knife that is extremely useful when I need a flashlight. But I still get that "Why do you carry a flashlight" and in the tone of "are you crazy", until a need arises and said folk then say "what a neat idea":confused:

I knew it!! I really did.:)

I live around a bunch of farmers. Tools get used. Other things .................... why would you even own them? :p

I own these knives simply because I'm a knifeknut. Though many of them only see rare use, I just love the time and skill it took to put them together, even if it is only dialing in a machine correctly for some of them! I'm not buying them as an investment, I'm buying because I love all thing sharp, especially those that "pre-broken":D

ZT0560 and leatherman Juice S2. Sometimes I'll switch to the charge tti and carry on the belt.

Don't feel bad cutter, I do the exact same thing. I carry a Kershaw Skyline in my back pocket every day and rotate through my ZT's (0560, 0551, 0550, 0350) in my front pocket. I like the security of knowing I have a larger blade should the need arise, but 9 out of 10 times I am reaching for the Skyline. I could easily get away with not carrying the ZT's at all, but I also enjoy the great conversations with other "knife nuts" that come from being able to show them off.

If you're crazy, we both are. :p

I rarely need to cut anything, so technically I can go by everyday without a knife and be perfectly fine. So when I do carry a knife it's mostly for novelty sake, and I enjoy playing with it whenever I get the chance (as long as I'm not in public).

Honestly, rarely does the need arise where I need anything more than a SAK. Doesn't stop me from carrying others, though :p

I carry 2 every day, an Izula2, and a BM Grip. I use the living sh!t out of both of em. Very few days go by, that I dont HAVE to sharpen them. I own nice blades, and I do carry them from time to time, but my 2 edc's are worked as designed.

I carry only one. Right now, it's my Umnumzaan. Other days, Para2, my Emerson is nice. Only one at a time. I don't carry a knife for defense.

I like knives, flashlights and multitools, so I carry as many of them as I can fit in my pockets. :D Oh, and just in case I keep a couple of back-ups in my rucksack. I only strip my kit down to the bare essentials when I'm traveling long distances on foot and every single kilogram counts.

This weekend, I've been carrying my ZT0550 in my front left pocket, since whatever shirt I'm wearing can cover it fine and no one is the wiser. Today, it was the only thing I was really "carrying," but I have a LM Squirt PS4 on my keychain, so the small multi-tool is always around anyway. During the week, I carry that, my LM Charge in my laptop bag, and usually a Victorinox Compact in my pocket that I end up using all day for whatever. I don't have an RDC bag, I almost never wear cargo pants, and my laptop bag is the primary avenue of carry almost every day.

I like carrying a lot of things, and since a large laptop bag is what I'm carrying 5-6 days out of the week, I'm inclined to carry an extra knife or two to play with while I'm bored at work (I work in my own office, and my coworkers don't really care about my knife habit to begin with).

Do I think I'm crazy? Yes. However it's not for reasons of my knife and tool obsessions.

Victorinox Classic (the little guy) meets most of my cutting needs. I carry another knife anyway, just to have it with me. You can't have too many knives, I suppose.

Hi Cutter -

I also carry a one-hand folding knife with pocket clip in my right pocket, and a smaller Vic Waiter in my left.

If I need to open my knife and use it with one hand, as in I am holding something in my left hand that needs to be held and cut, I use the one-hand folder.

If I am in an office environment or for many small cutting tasks, I will pull out my Waiter.

Sometimes, if I know I won't be working in the garage or yard, I will replace the clip-knife with a traditional slip-joint in my right pocket.

I would expect a knife fanatic to be fanatical about knives.

best
