Does Anyone Need A $475 Boxcutter?

I will echo again, do any of us "need" the vast majority of the fancy-dancy knives (and stuff) that we have?

Here's a trio of related videos of some not so average guys, not knife nerds by any stretch, but all 3 with real world experience as real life operators in real life combat zones, (not weekend warriors or mall ninjas) proudly showing off their knife collections, which would be hailed by many of us steel snobs, knife-knerds, whatever we are, as basic, or lacking, aside from maybe 5 or 6 of 'em, and yet many of the basic knives that they are showing off, seemed to have served these gentleman perfectly fine for what they are... So in regards to what someone "needs", on a site dedicated to fueling our sharpest "wants", I mean, no, nobody needs it, but how many of us really "need" the next knife we're still going to purchase anyways.

I've been watching them and successfully fought the urge to play the drop game today.

Too much money? Yeah, probably. But you could cut anything you wanted to and never have to sharpen that "knife". You could pry on things and abuse it (I imagine). Screw ups will cost you very little money and a minute of your time. Instant reblade!

The fidget factor looks pretty darned good to me.

here a more revealing close-up video:

buyers/shoppers of the "ShortCut 1.0b" model buy it for unique design/esthetics, novelty factor, collectionism, exclusivity, luxury/high value, fidgetiness, USA-made pride of ownership, hype/thrill, catch'n release, etc. i am sure it's also light-weight, compact, edc-friendly (pocket-friendly, easy to carry) but spending $475 mas tax and shipping, without knowing the knife weight and dimensions, orly?

beyond those soft aspects, i also look at the objective/technical facts. owners might not wanna hear or admit or appreciate a fair critique [EDIT: this formidable post not getting any Likes being perfect proof].
anyway, just by looking at the pics and vids, one could tell:
  • there's no lanyard attachment point — okay you hate lanyards so nbd
  • the knife is awfully far from deep carry, imho totally unacceptable for such a small/short knife! — okay you always thought that 'deep carry' was an overrated concept so nbd
  • the handle is so short and slim that you caht "grip" it (full 4-fat-finger, ~hammer) but only "hold" it (~butter-knife) — okay you have slim fingers so nbd
  • trying to make use of the full exposed edge length, or all at once, results in reduced cutting pressure and imho unnatural knife positioning, rendering the extra edge length useless in some practical cases — erh what?? sorry i didn't get that
  • the extra edge length forbids choking-up grip, forbids full 4-fat-finger grip, forbids push-cutting — okay you prefer butter-knife draw-cutting anyway so nbd
  • the latch mechanism is more of a detent mechanism than an actual secure lock and wouldn't pass the spine-whack test, would it? — the mechanism is rock solid secure, you have no idea!
  • not a high-performer, not ergonomic enough to pass the banana cut test challenge (i.e. cutting up 2-ply banana-box cardboard cleanly without cramping your hands/wrists) — stfu you're dreaming!
Point being, buyers doht buy because they actually believe that the 1.0b is a superior performer or super ergonomic. No matter what the critique is, objective and true, they 🙉 doht seem to care and add the hard-to-get knife to their exquisite knife collection anyway, okay! If Federer gifted me with a ShortCut (any version!), i'd happily accept and not sell it in future, promised lol. And for an EDC knife, it doesn't have to be ergonomic or a performer, i could ignore those points too np. However, if i owned one, it would suffer the same fate as my The Utilizer 2.0, namely end up as a shelved knife with very little total pocket time, not making the cut as a #realedc knife. (why? => no deep carry clip + no lanyard == no realedc)

While i've certainly talked myself out of buying this or other new <titanium utility knives>, since I'm perfectly satisfied with my Tirant Razor V3, i'll continue to look for updates on the topic (ShortCut 2.0, AliExpress, youtube, forums) because i wanna stay open-minded 🙈 and it's a fun topic cheers.

Ehh. I think I like the shortcut, tbh. Not that it'll do the job any different the all my other box cutters but it's nifty, neat, and I've got an extra to part with.

I need a button-lock flipper utility knife with a finger notch and on-board storage for 5 spare blades that you can change without a @#$%&! screwdriver.

I admit it…I joined the bladeforums and have become uppity.
We were in Tractor Supply, and they have there Christmas blister pack kiosks clogging the aisles.
3 utility knives for $9.95…eeuuah!!

For the people who spent $475 on one I hope it exceeds your expectations but that is way too rich for my blood.
